I don’t want anyone on here to complain about the hole punches on Android phones and how worse they look ever again. There’s no way you can tell me this is better than a simple hole punch. You have to be completely brainwashed by Apple’s marketing to think otherwise if this is supposed to be superior. And all just for the sake of ‘brand recognition’? It’s stupid.

Problem is iPhone has lot more sensors to make Face ID more secure compared to just front facing camera on other phones. I do agree that this mil shaped cutout and the notch don't look good, but it will take time to shrink the Face ID sensors even further. they should have just moved to under screen finger print sensor instead of this Face ID technology in my opinion.

It's called marketing - they already have the tech for under-screen, etc but Apple will always milk it every year with tech i.e the notch gets smaller and smaller so people carry on buying each year that new thing! so then this new pill becomes the new thing for 2 years then the under-screen camera will be introduced..

there are probably 10 sensors under that notch to make Face ID more secure, not just front facing camera, so it will take time to reduce the size of the sensors.

The notch is now iconic and it would be a major design error to replace it with a pill-shaped hole.
Just keep the notch until you can get rid of it entirely. People would rather have the notch than a halfway house.

I think they’re keeping the notch for one more generation and then going full screen with the camera and Face ID invisible under the screen

Apple brought the notch to the Mac lineup and people believe they will move away from it on the iPhone for this? ? Apple will most likely keep the notch and make it slightly smaller until they are ready for it to be located under the display.

I agree with this. The notch is here to stay imo until they are able to completely go full screen

How does the design affect the user experience? [I’m asking rhetorically] I don’t care if Apple adds a notch, hole punch or pill shape, does that personally take away from something that is so trivial and non-controversial? I think the less than one percenters’ on sites like this, just know how to drag something completely out of proportion. This thread is just a reminder of that.

it will work just like the notch but a little smaller. And our visual systems will start ignoring it in short order like any invariant visual signal.
