There's always a backlash with leaks but this is uglier than every other iPhone leak in history. The iphone 4 was gorgeous from the get go, the iphone 5 was sorta dumb looking, but this is extraordinarily bad.

Short memory. When the iPhone 4 leaked I remember people claiming it couldn't be real because Apple would never do something as ugly as that. Then when it shipped and people got to hold it and used it in person their opinions changed.

And when the 5 leaked people said the breaks were clearly something Apple would never do and therefore the leak was fake, but when it shipped those breaks became the iPhone 5's trademark.

Now, let's examine the iPhone 6 here: I think it looks good. I like the curved/moulded shape and I think the breaks are a very considered and deliberate design decision. They serve a legit purpose and therefore they don't try to hide themselves. And furthermore they are colour coded, so they work well. They are not artificially trying to look 'silver' to really blend in, they are admitting their own material construction and being true to the material they actually are; a very design centric choice and not tacky at all.

I like it. Out of the 4, the 5 and the 6 leaks I like this design the most.

----------

This probably is the non-anodized "raw" shell. Once finished those lines will blur away or be hidden completely by whatever existing/new and improved process they use to anodize/finish the shell.

This is a finished back, and it's anodised. The breaks look good. It's seeing them in isolation which is turning you off them. They are beautiful.

I can't understand why everyone hates those antenna breaks . I think that they make the back really beautiful , because without them it would look like the back of the iPod touch and iPad ( just a piece of aluminium , nothing special). But until now , I think the best design was the 5's with the chamfered edges surrounding the glass and the aluminium. The glass breaks were really beautiful and made the back more than just a piece of aluminium. But now that they are gone , those antenna breaks aren't so bad. At least it is better than nothing on the back. I wish they could keep the glass breaks on the top and the bottom , but I have no problems with this design.
Here is how it would look without those breaks: ( the fake leaked images earlier this year)

I agree, I think those antenna breaks will bring more personality to it, must not judge an apple design on spy picture. As for me I already like it :D

This is ugly as crap and apple wouldn't release something so ugly.

Prepare to be wrong. People vomited when iOS 7 was shown but now we have gotten used to it and came to love it. These breaks are real. Apple has a history of doing things like this. You only need look as far as the 3G iPads or iPods.

i really like the breaks and size of them, you're all gonna love it when you see the finished product anyway, potato camera pictures always bring out the moaners.

I vastly prefer the curved shape and makes it look razor thin to boot. size and feel will be so good compared to true square beasts of iPhone 5/5s. loved the 3G design much more so this looks like a bit of a montage to that.

Homage.

Apple needs to start buckling down more.....all these rumors of Apple products/pictures on the most part become true.

I watched the WWDC live and to be honest, I read about everything already online from websites like this...hardly any surprises anymore.

Which WWDC did you watch? WWDC was full of surprises. Hardware surprises on the other hand are insanely difficult for a company of Apple's size. Even if an iWatch has yet to leak.

The iPhone looks fantastic in this video based on the rumors:

Wow, that's sexy!!

Though questions have been raised in the past if in fact Apple is behind controlled leaks.

I've heard this echoed through the thread... but I can't wrap my head around why Apple would do such a thing.

Apple recently had their best-selling Holiday quarter ever. And March quarter too. Apple certainly doesn't need to use tricks to drum up support for the next iPhone... which will probably break even more records.

And why would Apple want people to start thinking about the next iPhone now? It won't be released for another 3 or 4 months.

Apple gets plenty of sales throughout the summer and Fall... they wouldn't want to jeopardize those.

I don't think Apple would "Osborne" themselves.

I guess we will never find out, though for one thing, the same thing happens every year and everyone is in a frenzy when the iphone launches.

I for one, believe they need hype way before the phone launches to keep people interested, the last thing is falling off the consumers radar and having them purchase another phone. Leaks are good for Apple, except the iphone 4, that was a real Fubar and accident.

I suspect alot of people who look at MR each day, hope to get some news about the new iPhone.....well at this point.... any damn hardware lol.

Thanks for pointing that out, I am also surprised about this weeping here. You know what's the funniest thing? When suddenly people's opinions begin to change. My favourite is: "it's growing on me..." :DD And if there will be people who will never like the design? Big deal. I'm sure the majority will. Apple's not some amateur company who goes with a design without thinking and making
comprehensive researches and then suddenly realizes: "Oh gross... it is indeed ugly. We messed up guys." :D

after all the excitement of wwdc, back to iPhone rear shells and mockups for 3 months!

But look back over recent threads and you'll see these always get the most comments... As much as many would like more real Apple news it's these stories that get the most general interest!

Wow. Looks like they're really doing it. Started window shopping for 4" Android phones...
I will not be seen with a gigantic ghetto phone and Dr. Dreck headphonez. Stupid. Apple will pretty soon be back to where they've been once before. A cheapened brand with buggy systems and applications.

I'm calling it. Back to rounded tapering edges and volume rockers? I wouldn't believe this if Ives put it in my hand.

I'm not sure I believe they're controlled leaks either, but leaks have advantages:
  • Get people's interest and stops them purchasing a new phone for a few months. That's important for folks who are coming off contract in the next three months and might be considering a newer, non-iPhone model.
  • You can get folks attention and practically lock them into buying the shiny new iPhone without being held accountable to deliver in the timeframe (buys wiggle room in case of production delays.

This is a test

I am unable to start a new thread. I have read the FAQ and Help sections without satisfaction. So I am trying to post to an existing thread to see if that is possible. So far, since I am typing it look promising.

Please forgive this odd post since I am going to continue to see if it appears.

Leaks or not... by now most of the smartphone-buying world is aware that Apple has one major iPhone launch each year. If someone is in the market for a new iPhone... one is coming.

We MacRumors readers see these leaks... but how many "normals" see them?

This is geekery at its finest. But the average smartphone buyers don't visit sites like this.

There would still be a frenzy even if we didn't see blurry photos of iPhone components :)

No, I thought the 5 was beautiful from the leaks even. I've hated the look of iOS7 since the day I first installed the beta. I was hoping with iOS8 it would get refined a bit, but no. I've got Yosemite installed on my air too and it's just as bad. I LOVE a well down flat UI, but iOS and Yosemite isn't it.

The homescreen will look something like this next to a 5s.
When the tall iPhone 5 came out everyone called it ugly, and now nobody thinks that because you get used to it.
Same with iOS 7.

I work in design for a living, and I'm telling you, those are missteps if they're real. The thick bands that cross the back of the device would have been fine enough (though not aesthetically pleasing, but the way they create those awkward shapes just make it awful. I hope these aren't real, but I've seen enough of these leaks year over year to know this is probably what we're getting. About the best Apple could do is explain that they did for some insane technological breakthrough. But I seriously doubt that.

I agree, I think those antenna breaks will bring more personality to it, must not judge an apple design on spy picture. As for me I already like it :D

I honestly have moved from eager leak-seeker to feeling sorry for Apple. We basically know what the whole iPhone looks like 3 months before launch. It's like someone spoiling your surprise birthday gift for a friend.

Yet there wasn't a whisper about Swift, Continuity, Photos for iCloud, etc.

I guess software will be where the surprises lie from now on. :)

I must say I really trust them designwise... they never disappointed me and having not seen the product in all its glory I think it's a mistake to judge it now. I was really sceptical when I first saw the photos that leaked for the iPhone 5 and it turned out it's one of the best design I've ever seen. Now I can understand this one looks a bit weird, but to me I find it original, a bit surprising and I think that's what I love about them :)

Lighted back? Silly

There can be no fathomable reason to 'illuminate' the Apple logo on the back of the phone when 99% of the world's population use cases that render this 'feature' moot.
