This really is shaping up to be the ugliest iphone since the 3G/3GS.

I think the antenna breaks are so large because those are the only plastic exposure for the antenna - I think the inserts are metal, so the breaks have to be large for the antenna.

The top and bottom parts of the outer frame are the antennas. The inserts are now metal for durability and distinction from earlier iPhones, and they can't touch the antenna. The breaks aren't for signal penetration, but to buffer between them.

I remember when the iPhone 4 leaked and the reaction was not overly positive. Then the final product was shown and it now stands as one the most beautiful iPhone designs.

Lesson is to wait for the final product before judging.

The iPhone 4 was definitely the cleanest of them all so far. The 5/5S look pretty good (admittedly, the 5S was my first iPhone heheh).

Not sure how I feel about this one yet. Guess I'll wait till the finished thing is unveiled.

Those antenna breaks look so awful... Like the clean cut on 5/5S. But seriously..... Apple spends so much money on R&D. Why can't they figure out how to get rid of those? -.-

They haven't quite yet figured out how to change the rules of physics.

Apple needs to start buckling down more.....all these rumors of Apple products/pictures on the most part become true.

I watched the WWDC live and to be honest, I read about everything already online from websites like this...hardly any surprises anymore.

example: new iphone will have rounded corners (leaked), new iphone will have power button on side (leaked)

What happen to the days when we would be surprised by what Apple announces on presentation day? I remember when Steven Jobs would host the conferences, it was like the audience was on pins and needles, edge of their seats just waiting for the words to flow off his mouth about what was new. Does anyone miss those days?

Don't you think it more likely that the inserts are now the cellular antennas, given that they are isolated from the main part of the frame as well as the top and bottom? This would also explain the need to have a new window, in the form of the Apple logo cut-out, for the BlueTooth and WiFi antennas.

I agree, but I highly doubt it'll end up looking like that...maybe the top/bottom will be painted?

September is when my iphone 5 two-year contract ends. If they release it sooner, it's going to be an even more painful wait for many of us on that schedule.

Or alternatively there will be stock available when your contract is up so you can just walk in and grab one!

i really like the breaks and size of them, you're all gonna love it when you see the finished product anyway, potato camera pictures always bring out the moaners.

I vastly prefer the curved shape and makes it look razor thin to boot. size and feel will be so good compared to true square beasts of iPhone 5/5s. loved the 3G design much more so this looks like a bit of a montage to that.

Still hoping for the larger 5inch one to come along though, this 4.7 inch one is great but i would really like to have a bit more room for thumbs as typing is nit always that accurate on the 5s because of the keyboard.

Really, really, ugly.

Such a lame design, and those thick antenna breaks ugh. Guess I'll be keeping my 4S for another 2 years until iPhone 7 comes out :(

tell me about it! I felt the same way with the iPhone 5/5s design wise. "well i guess i'll just keep my iPhone 4 for a bit more then". Now my iPhone is screaming for an update and i don't find their design pleasing. I only got an iPhone/smartphone because i was thrilled by the iPhone 4 and it's glass-metal-glass sandwich design. Absolutely stunning!

What do i do? get a 4s or 5c/5sc? i quite like the acndy plastic design of the c series so far. Reminds me of the old days of coloured iMacs and iBooks. And lets not forget iPod minis and the nanos when they had colours.

For most it will go in a case, so what it looks like is less important than how well ios8 works on it, and how nice the screen looks.

I've stuck with my 4S because I think it is an industrial design classic (and will be the smartphone that ends up in design museums) and because I disliked the way the 5/5S references the appearance of 4/4S without any particular functional need, making it akin to a knock-off. Add to that the downgrade in materials from stainless steel to flimsy and scratch-prone aluminium (with a poorly-dyed anodised layer in the case of the slate model), flush inserts on the back but protruding glass on the front, poor positioning of the cameras and earpiece, and it seems like the most un-Apple-like device they have produced in years. The simple plastic 5C has greater design integrity, albeit ruined for me by the bizarre decision to contrast tropical colours with black.

That said, my 4S is showing its hardware age, so I will have to get a 6 even if it piques my prissy aesthetic sensitivities ;) Given that the 5S internals are advanced enough to last another couple of years, a clean 6C design housing them might be the way to go.

Apple is continuing to lose market share to Android phones...

And yet... Apple is selling more iPhones now than they ever have. What more do you want them to do?

Don't forget... you're comparing a single company (Apple) to dozens of companies (the Android collective)

Apple will never have the majority of smartphone market share in the future... and they never did in the past either. That's fine. When the iPhone first came out... Symbian was the market share leader. Now it's Android.

So what?

Is it just me that thinks that the back would look much better without those breaks?

Oh ffs here we go again.... let me guess. Apple would never produce a phone with breaks in it.

And here is the front, as we have seen:
Was this supposed to be funny? If so keep trying cause you fell flat.

Any gains will be (at least partly) offset by the extra power draw from the larger screen.
You've done testing on the actual device to know this?! Give us the info ffs, stop holding out!

I for one am looking forward to the new larger sized iPhones.... giant ugly lines and all.
I don't. I like to use "volume up" as a camera shutter (since that functionality exists). With the power button directly opposite, I'll be shutting the phone down every time I take a landscape photo
I want a phone I can fit in my back pocket and still sit down without bending it. iPhone 5 is already a bit long actually.
1. Why can't you simply move your finger away from the power button.... doesn't seem like rocket science to me. 2. Do you use your laptop, iPad or other tablet as a seat cushion? If not, why would you expect to be able to sit on your iPhone and have it last?

Why they start copying HTC right now .....
HTC One M7 is far more better than this...

Too small.

Give me 5.5 inches. Bigger size makes my mouth water.

Come on bro...this is just too easy.

No iPhone has ever been considered ugly, and apple never rocks the boat, it will look great, if only the battery lasted longer.

The design of iOS 8 and the hardware of iPhone seems to be getting uglier. I think Jony has lost his touch. Those breaks on the back make the iPhone look cheap.

I don't think he's lost his touch.

(1) I don't think he's ever had any "touch" for software UI. It's just not his game

(2) Wait until you actually see the finished product to judge the hardware. When I first saw the leaked pictures, I thought the iPhone 4 was the ugliest thing I'd ever seen and there was no way it could be the real thing. But it actually turned out to be a pretty great design.

To say the least ...

I don't think I've seen a more negative reaction since, except maybe iOS 7.

I'll admit, I thought it looked horrendous until I saw the final product.

Ummmm, no you didn't. You're telling me you knew Apple was going to introduce a whole new programming language? Or a low level graphics API? Or app extensions? Please.

WWDC was all about software, and since that's built in the US exclusively by Apple employees it's easier to keep a lid on things.

The rumors on the software side were pretty limited, with the exception of the health and homekit portions, which didn't even end up being that big in the presentation.

I think a single horizontal line at the top and bottom would be okay. It's really just the continuation of the lines along the curved edges that make it look bad. Kind of hoping for a 6c model at this point. I suspect that will be a ways off though seeing as how there haven't been any rumors and they will likely go for a 6/5s/5c lineup at first.
