I’m not a fan of the square look. I think if they added infrared technology that can see through clothes, the phone will be a big hit.

I don’t care about the camera. But no USB-C = no buy. Your move, Apple.

Why is usb c so important ?

USB c is a horrible mess

All the different PD voltages and amps and every connector supports different versions , not all comparable with an iPhone.

Some usb c only support usb 2 some 3.1

I get you want a all in one future standard but current usb c is awful

Maybe usb 4

Just had a thought ... if this article is to be showing molds, should they not be mirror images and concave design of what is to be produced?

Camera bump concave on the top right-side, Apple logo punched out and/or a mirror image?

We all thought and said that about the iPhone X too yet here we are. I still dislike this pro type leak suggesting this ugly camera just like you though.

Sadly I think this year Apple is playing catch-up to the current androids if ultrawide is the only thing the third camera will bring.

Recall the iPhone 7 camera prototype that had a larger bulge around the single camera va what we got (more refined)? I actually preferred that blue flat colour and bulge, not on this 2019 prototype leak yuck!

I keep seeing this yet why the need for this port?

- adds more bulk to the phone or thickness (very minimal but still there.
- without the gain in data transfer speeds (and below) this port has no use.
- without faster than 7.5W charging again USB-C is useless.

Is it just for one cable complaint? Solution USB-C to lightning cable and you’re done. USB-C charging block - Apple already has done.

Next if Apple gave you USB-C cable for iPhone you’ll be complaining that not all chargers or cables support rapid charging or data throughputs even if they are labelled USB-C!
My assumption is it will look less unbalanced in person, that usually seems to be the case with these controversial design decisions... at any rate I guess with a case on (making it flush) and being on the back at least it's going to be relatively infrequently seen. I am definitely hoping for more than just another camera focal length :(

Also agree about USB C, it's benefits seem limited on a phone, outside of sharing a wired charger with other devices (I'd even go as far as to say wireless Qi makes this even less a benefit).

No. Not that kind of molds. These are intended to be used as dummies for the phone so the case makers can see if the cases fit.

I am glad, Apple is making it easier for me to get out from this upgrade cycle. Dont see need to upgrade one more year.

I don't think the iPhone X design is going to change much from year to year. We already know that people are holding on to their smartphones (or at least iPhones) for longer periods of time. It doesn't make sense to keep radically changing the design of your phone every year, when your users are not upgrading that often.

I won't be surprised if Apple keeps the basic design largely unchanged for up to 5 years. They seem to be okay with the basic idea of the notch and a protruding camera in the very least. Face ID is definitely here to stay. Plus Apple did say that this would be their template for the next ten years or something along that line.
Major iPhone redesigns now happen at 3 year intervals, which is in line with the plurality of consumer upgrade behavior. So it’s no surprise to see an iterative design this year. No reason for a complete redesign just yet. This year’s iPhone is mostly targeting iPhone 7 (and below) users. And this is a massive upgrade for them.

I have an iPhone X, so my next iPhone will be the 2020 model since I’ve also adopted the 3 year pattern. And I expect that iPhone to be as much of a leap in design and features as iPhone 7 users will enjoy with this year’s model.

If this is how it turns out, I'm sure it'll be fine. Granted, I'd prefer lengthening the camera array instead of widening it, but it's fine. All the vitriol/angst seems a bit disproportionate to what I'm seeing ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Agreed. The current optical equivalents are, what, something like 28mm and 50mm -ish? Give me a 90mm or 135mm and I’ll be set.

Yeah, I already knew USB C was more flexible/capable.
For example Lightning can't do USB 3.1, 3.2 or thunderbolt and it doesn't support as high power output as USB C.
Also phones like Note 9 or Huawei Mate 20, P20, P30 etc. also have support for desktop mode when connected with a cable to a TV or a Monitor.

Lightning's main advantage vs Micro USB was that it's reservable so you don't have to plug it in a certain way.

There is nothing stopping lightning from implementing any variant of USB as it's data pipeline - the Lightning protocol is not reliant on how (or what) data is channeled, just how it's encoded to the device and to the cable.

There's an awesome quote by one of Apple's engineers on this article that explains why Apple did transition connectors - it wasn't for the shape, it was to move hardware out of iOS devices to fix the pin problem:

There is no clever wire multiplexing involved. Contrary to the opinions presented in this thread, we didn’t do this to screw the customer. We did this to specifically shift the complexity of the “adapter” bit into the adapter itself, leaving the host hardware free of any concerns in regards to what was hanging off the other end of the Lightning cable. If you wanted to produce a Lightning adapter that offered something like a GPIB port (don’t laugh, I know some guys doing exactly this) on the other end, then the only support you need to implement on the iDevice is in software- not hardware. The GPIB adapter contains all the relevant Lightning -> GPIB circuitry.
[...]
This system essentially allows us to output to any device on the planet, irregardless of the endpoint bus (HDMI, DisplayPort, and any future inventions) by simply producing the relevant adapter that plugs into the Lightning port. Since the iOS device doesn’t care about the hardware hanging off the other end, you don’t need a new iPad or iPhone when a new A/V connector hits the market.

Calling it now:

"We have long thought that watches are the most beautiful items created by man, so we took our inspiration for the design of the camera housing from a chronograph watch" - Jony Ive's voice during the unveiling video in the September keynote.

Apple sold a cumulative 300 million iPhones by 2012 when Lightning was introduced. Apple is now approaching 3 billion iPhones.

The advantage of USB-C vs. Lightning is nowhere as big as Lightning vs. 30-pin.

I understand there’s more lighting, simply buy years of sale. But iPhones were not the only device that used the 30 pin, iPads used it too. My point remains, Apple isn’t going to take into account how many lighting cable users there are. They will eventually move to USB-C.

How many other laptop charging cables were in use? Apple still moved to USB-C. They’ll do the same with iPhone. I bet they’ll make a small fortune in cable sales.

No, they’re waiting for USB-D.

Adding a third camera makes sense, given the current landscape. But Apple is very conscious of maintaining a unique design language, and the more obvious contenders for an attractive design have already been taken. I don't think there is any real advantage to housing the cameras in the upper corner of the phone. Holding a Galaxy S10+ in the left hand, and using the volume button for the shutter, does not move the hand in front of the lens. Having the cameras centers across the back makes for a stable phone when laying on a desk. And, quite frankly, it looks better than what Apple is proposing. But there is just no way Apple would adopt the same layout as Samsung, just as there is no way Samsung was going to adopt the wide notch.

Putting aside the ugly camera array, there are a couple of weird things about this. Why is the Apple logo centered on the Max but not the smaller one? Why is the word "iPhone" elongated on both? I'm suspicious of these.

Nope, still like my iPhone 8 very much. Played around with iPhone X and XS at Apple store and did not like it. Always decided to wait for the next generation, that hopefully would have a better design. As it looks by now, this will be the same procedure with the upcoming XI.
I respect your opinion. But, please, just give Face ID a try. I was indifferent to it until I used it. It works better live than on paper. It is truly the best and most frictionless unlocking mechanism available. It feels that you effectively doesn’t have a passcode or touch configuration. It bypasses the need to do anything to see your protected files, passwords etc.

Now that is some dedication lol. I’m indifferent. If they did the button under the screen thing and eliminated faceID I wouldn’t care.

Huh? What’d I do other than ask for more of your insights?
sorry if I misunderstood, maybe I did
I also will like to hear or read your insights as well too
for a second there I thought that you were just asking for me to keep writing
like you were doing it on purpose, like let me keep the bothering this guy
so he keeps writing

but if I see that you write then I don't have any problem writing back to you
that's why I said
"I also will like to hear or read your insights as well too"
I apologies for my comment maybe I did misunderstood and had a wrong impression
but I felt that way because you were asking short questions and you weren't writing back
so I thought that you were trying to play me

hope is clear now
regards

I think this explained apple actions, they are not innovating any more, is obvious , they are simply trying to catchup with samsung, apple should lead not follow. but they trying to squeeze every drop of juice as much as they possible can, giving less for more, but when the competition gets tough then they decide to upgrade and make some changes, but is really because they are being forced to by the competition, so now we all know why apple is coming out with a 3rd lens, because samsung already have a phone with 3 lens, very original mr cook, stop playing the copy game and come out with your own inventions or at least lead the way, that how it used to be until you became CEO

Show me other phones with smaller notch that have the same FaceID tech. They all just have a front facing camera, that’s why they can be smaller.

Apple already have lightning to USB-C cable for sale. Why should the iPhone have USB-C, which larger port than lightning? Only latest Pros have USB-C, newer iPad mini 5 and iPad Air have lightning.

I do agree the rear camera bump is a bit unsightly. But Jonny Ive is weird sometimes.
[doublepost=1555839303][/doublepost]
Most Android phones with USB-C are still using the USB 2.0 standard, only the jack is changed. So no point in using USB-C since lightning can already do everything USB2.0 can, with smaller footprint to boot.

this reply is so apple.

let's not act that FACE ID is that secure, that FACE ID tech to iphone is what the butterfly keyboard is to macbook. a newer technology that apple cant reverse despite its flaw.

iPad Mini 5 and iPad Air are budget ipads, who expects them to have USB C? these iphones are not budget.

stop using the argument of apple having a lighting to usb c cable for sale, if that was the case then they shouldnt have bother to put it in the ipad in the first place.

to call Jonny Ive weird sometimes is a criticism made by a fanatic, perhaps not sometimes, but many times.

that inefficient way to charge the 1st gen Apple Pencil and Apple Mouse, the butterfly keyboard failure, the bending of iPad, the malfunctioning screens on Macs.

functionality has been sacrificed all for those superficial design. sooner, this company will be more of a fashion company than a tech company. who cares about reliability and functionality as long as it looks good.

Smart HDR and dynamic video are not innovation? The neural engine is not innovation? Saying that apple "copied" a third lens is akin to saying apple copied a bigger phone with the iphone 6. Or that fashion designers copied a narrower lapel. It's all in the same realm of thought.
