What I like to do is get the latest iPhone year to year. Not head over heels about the design as it’s similar to my XS Max with a bigger camera lens, however the resale value stays at an all time high. Last years Note 9 is barely at $700. My XS Max is still averaging between $1000-$1100. Big difference!

People keep their iPhones 3-4 years nowadays... I guess flashy people will have to flash the back of their phone.

btw well over a billion people have Lightning on iPhones/iPads/AirPods. USB-C MacBook Pro and iPad Pro are less than 50 million. So I don’t see Apple changing the connector to make 1 in 20 people happy, while 19 out of 20 would be worse off.

The same could have been said about the 30 pin connector. Apple still moved on to lighting.

I was hoping we’d see a move to the design language of the newest iPad Pros (i.e. a return to squared off edges a la iPhone 4/5/SE models). This looks like it’ll be the ugliest iPhone yet, which is a shame if so.

Apple sold a cumulative 300 million iPhones by 2012 when Lightning was introduced. Apple is now approaching 3 billion iPhones.

The advantage of USB-C vs. Lightning is nowhere as big as Lightning vs. 30-pin.

I prefer the stoplight triple lens look vs. 3 eggs in a frying pan look. Regardless hope the front changes (less notch, less bezel).

The only purpose of squared edges is to magnetically attach the Pencil. Squared edges make no sense on iPhone. Jony Ive has said rounded edges make iPhone feel slimmer.

Can someone remind me why Apple decided to use Lightning rather than going with standards? Is it truly a self money motivated decision?

As much as I prefer the functionality of Android, I really am becoming increasingly more bothered by the tracking that Google does and would like to switch back to a platform that doesn't track me (as much). But I'm sorry, the value proposition just isn't there at $999 for a phone that has a ginormous notch, going on a three year old design, with an ugly camera array like that. You look at the competition and then back at the iPhone and you can't help but feel that you're getting ripped.

The phone that I truly am wanting is the successor to the iPhone SE. That'd be a for-sure purchase. But who knows if that'll ever happen.

Apple is really falling behind in design
I’m inclined to agree, at least with regard iPhone. The iPP flat-sided design has been met with nothing but praise, and yet they do not adopt a similar design because... Such a phone would fly off the shelves.

Spider-Eye Design! New for 2020!

Partially, such as not including a fast-charger in the iPhone box, but I think it’s actually laziness, which would explain a LOT of their other decisions. If it were fully money-motivated, they’d switch to USB-C to sell more new cables & adapters.

Buy new accessories, or a $30 adapter if you refuse to update.

USB-C should be standard across all Apple products.

At this point I think it's fair to say things have solidified around this design so 99% this is what we're getting in September... I hope the Camera performance is worth it for that huge carbuncle of a bump on the back!
Even with the computing power of an iMac Pro and a camera performance better than the most expensive DSLR I would not buy this iPhone because it's sooooooo damned ugly! I would feel ashamed if this ugly thing would lie on the table in front of me. People would stare at me and ask themselves: How could he buy such an ugly smart phone? He seems to have no sense for good style at all. This thing would have never come across the table of Steve. Never!

Apples downturn in iPhone sales will accelerate even more. The best thing to do is to buy one of the tuned iPhone 8 and hope for a better future ...

I agree USB-C should be standard. But given the iPhone doesn't benefit much from USB-C and the licensing revenue makes it unlike Apple will switch.

People really forget that case manufacturers only care about the exterior of the phone, not the display. Apple would never show them the new notch (if they decide to change it). It's not that hard to guess.

It must be difficult going through life being so concerned about what others might think about you based on your possessions.
