If its just a spec bump then why even update it after all these years?

Sales.

Not bad, not bad.. Probably everyone here wouldn't hope for Face ID and iPad Pro-like design. Keyboard and pencil support will be appreciated.

I certainly don’t want the bend-ability of the iPad Pros.

I hope the mini retains the current laminated, low-reflectance screen. Would prefer A11/3GB but A10/2GB would be ok (somewhat reluctantly) as long as it still has an excellent screen.

My concern is with all of the rumors of a new low-cost screen.

It's because Apple don't know what to do with it (this and the iPod Touch). The update rumors suggest that the A8 devices will loose support in iOS13 and Apple will kick the can down the road on the real decision (update the Mini/iPT properly or drop them completely) and just release the same design with the minimum acceptable chip. I fully expect an A10/2 GB for both the Mini and iPT which will not bring them near the performance of the latest devices (iPhone 8 onwards) but provide a decent level of performance that will be supported for the next few years.

This is just sad. In the meantime, chinese are spewing hundreds of various phone designs, and for cheap prices, and here is Apple - giving the same design as in 2012 .... seven years later. Is it the same 1.2 Mp front camera??? I had a 5mp camera on my Nokia N95 in 2006 ...13 years ago.

I mean, the design is perfect , but it's not THAT perfect.

This size bezel looks like abomination in 2019.

Lucky for them Android manufacturers don't care and make underpowered tablets,
but if there was any kind of distribution, I would gladly take one of those Xiaomi Mi Pad 4 Plus, for 260 euros.

It seems like there’s just one rumor of a low-cost screen, and it wouldn’t show in a CAD drawing. But yeah I’m a little worried, the current screen is amazing.

There must be some change to the screen if it does in fact have Pencil support. If it has the same screen as the $329 iPad I’ll be pretty disappointed, probably wouldn’t upgrade. I hope the mini 4 gets iOS 13, since it’s still a pretty decent performer, thanks to the 2GB of RAM, even though the A8 is showing its age.

But if it doesn’t perform well enough Apple will probably draw the line at iOS 12. If the 4 is compatible with iOS 13, I’d definitely try it early on while they’re still signing 12, in case I want to revert.

So what is the point of this product?

What was the point of the SE? [Rhetorical] If you watched the 2016 March keynote, Greg Joswiak stated they returned the SE because there was a demographic that still really appreciated a smaller iPhone, which Apple wanted to entertain. That very well could be the same reasoning by ‘spec bumping’ the Mini. Point is, the Mini doesn’t necessarily need to have all the latest features from the Pro line, not when the main purpose of this device was to have something smaller for those who wanted it, compared to how large iPads are today.

So what is the point of this product? If they were just planning a spec bump why so long between updates?
Maybe because with the 2GB RAM performance was decent with iOS 12. Maybe because Apple stretches product lifecycles for low profit products that don’t sell all that well (Mac mini comes to mind).

The point is there are several verticals that find the mini indispensable: pilots, doctors, point-of-sale for instance. It’s great as an e-reader too. A8 is on its last legs even with 2GB, and a CPU bump will give it another three years of shelf life.

This makes no sense, Apple went on FaceID route, so why would they bring out a device with TouchID?

Indeed makes no sense whatsoever. If that's the case then just let it die. If it was a new design like the Pro I would definitely buy one.

Keep in mind, this is nothing more than a CAD render. Meaning, there could be no factual truth whatsoever. Or, it doesn’t mean that Apple won’t use face ID either, or, the iPad mini won’t be updated at all.

That's the challenge with the Mini (perhaps more than the other iPads). The reasons why people buy the Mini are perhaps more diverse than for the other form-factors. So what the Mini 5 is (if it is released) will be sure to disappoint a large group of fans.

I'm puzzled by this logic. There is obviously interest in the iPad Mini and it has a base of people who use it and enjoy it. Why must a device cater to everyone or be discontinued?

Imo, the point of this product (and the rumored iPod) is potential increased sales that tie into services. Price points that are more attainable for more people allow for more potential users of Apple's services. I don't think they were planning a spec bump. I think they were planning to let the product die of neglect and then discontinue it. Then life happened. Market conditions and their services push gave the iPad mini a new lease on life. No need to re-tool a factory for a new frame. Cheaper screen and updated internals (not the latest chips but something older and cost effective). Perfect consumption device for services. Same with the rumored iPod update. Devices in the hands of consumers helps drive services. Lower cost of entry helps get devices in the hands of consumers.

Lame. I’d buy an iPad mini in new form factor immediately. iPad mini 4 I have now is the perfect work and airplane companion.

If your current Mini is already perfect, what would a new form factor allow you to do that would be better?

I think that a spec bump is a lot more important than a new form factor, given that A8 devices probably won’t be supported much longer.

So basically Apple is doing everything they didnt want to do in the past. Put out as many cheap devices as possible and hope for as much services revenue as possible.. Boy have times changed.

Your first sentence exactly what I think Apple would do in this situation with the Mini. And I already used the example, but I’ll use it again, look at the iPhone SE. All they did with the SE was update the internals and retain the same form factor, which is exactly what the consumer wants, the smaller form factor. There are so many situations where I don’t need to carry around my larger iPad, I would rather have an updated Mini with a few minor internal improvements, and I’m sure most will be perfectly fine with that. Of course, the price point should be attractive, assuming Apple doesn’t add too many options that would make it less attractive.

Well they brought out the $329 9.7” iPad last March with TouchID, the MacBook Pros in July and the new MacBook Air in October.

It’s still relatively expensive to include, the cheapest device that has FaceID if the $749 XR.
