What's the point in this article when there is nothing new to add especially when the alleged leaker did not share any info?

So basically Apple is doing everything they didnt want to do in the past. Put out as many cheap devices as possible and hope for as much services revenue as possible.. Boy have times changed.
They introduced the $329 9.7” iPad two years ago and gave it Pencil support last year. Apple introducing lower cost devices isn’t exactly new, and it isn’t the negative you’re trying to spin it as. And a lot of people wouldn’t even call the mini a cheap device, at $399.

If its just a spec bump then why even update it after all these years?

So improving the existing product is worse than leaving it as is. Makes perfect sense.

Generate ad revenue. You had to click to find out there's nothing new.

Great news if true, as far as I’m concerned. Especially if it means they could sell it at a low price at the same time as updating the internal specs. Newer designs aren’t always better.

iPad SE anyone?

Am I the only one who was really hoping for an edge to edge display in this? I suppose they wouldn't want to comprimise the price in order to stick in a Face ID module. The mini is the perfect size IMO anything bigger is a bit of a pain to travel with.

For years people lugged ten-pound 17" laptops around, but a 15-ounce full-size iPad is somehow a "pain to travel with" because it weighs 5 ounces more and is barely 2" wider than a Mini?

"Just" an spec bump?? Thats all I ever wanted for the mini! :) Heck I would be happy if all Macs got a spec bump every year and a new design like every 6 or 7 years.

It's all just my opinion of what I see happening. I don't necessarily see it as a negative like some. I see it as a company reacting to changes in the market. Doing things to position themselves for long term success and stability. The alternative would be Apple continuing to do things as they always have done, hoping to achieve the same results they used to achieve. It's pretty obvious that ain't gonna happen. To me, this is just an additional strategy to go along with the original strategy. It doesn't mean they have to completely abandon their appeal to the top of the market. It just means they are broadening their appeal to more of the market.

This is disappointing, I’m someone who likes the iPad mini for its size first and price second

What's the disappointing part about it? Nothing here says that size or price will change.

So what is the point of this product? If they were just planning a spec bump why so long between updates?

Because a company can only devote so many resources to a given number of projects, and this was a lower priority than other projects.

I’ve come to be expecting disappointment with Apple lately.

There's always Android. Let us know how that works out.

This is the first time I've heard anyone refer to an Apple device as "cheap." Seems contrary to all the whining about price increases. But I guess people will say anything to support a flimsy argument.

I'm only with a spec bump as along as it has the latest specs and improvements, ie
A12 cpu, 4gb ram, bluetooth 5, headphone jack, improved speakers, improved front and rear camera, has flash, improved touch id.

If they are not spending money and effort in re-designing, then I expect them to put the effort into improved internals.

Another reason I've been falling out of love with Apple for years.

Given their obsesession with giant phones (that you literally need software to push the top of the screen down to be able to use), I'm amazed they're even bothering to release a new iPad mini.

The absolute minimum effort in updating it is no surprise.

Look, you can't expect a small company like Apple to afford the manpower to design an updated model.
Perhaps one day they will be able to devote a couple of extra people onto the project ;)

But, what else does the mini need (Assuming it retains Touch ID, 3.5 Jack, maybe adding Pencil Support, ect) ? A variety of more capabilities and features that would only increase the price point? Don’t you think that would detract away from what the mini really is, a ‘small, portable’ device that has a relatively cheaper Price under the more expensive iPad models? Think about the demographic that actually purchases the mini, why do they want it? Because they want something more compact and portable for lighter tasking in most situations, but doesn’t carry the higher price that the Pro line does. The question should be, why wouldn’t Apple consider refreshing the mini?

More than leading edge design, Apple needs, IMO, to build rock-solid devices with a high quality of manufacturing. That is where the iPhone SE, 2017/18 iPad, and this new Mini (perhaps) come into play.

There were no "-gates" with any of those devices because they were tried-and-true designs. For those who want finicky Apple devices with leading edge designs, there are plenty of options. But for the rest of us, a spec-bumped Mini (with Pencil support) would be very welcomed.

Easy answer: to sell...penny pinching.
[doublepost=1550582383][/doublepost]I would check the durability of that ipad mini. Who knows...mini might bend as well like ipad pro....

If your current Mini is already perfect, what would a new form factor allow you to do that would be better?

I think that a spec bump is a lot more important than a new form factor, given that A8 devices probably won’t be supported much longer.
Yea. Edge to edge and Face ID would be nice. I’m not “complaining” per se. just saying lame. Lol. On the other hand glad the form factor still has life.

Fine. Good even. I picked up a pro 11, and using an ipad with no home button is fine for sitting around the house, but the mini is so much more portable that the physical home button is a big advantage. When you grab it out of a pocket, you can either already hit the button with your thumb, turning it on, or, not feel it and immediately know you’ve got the other end. You never have to fumble around looking for which end is up. The square edged pro design gives you no instantly discernable indicator of its orientation, which is fine for a mostly stationary device like a large ipad, but will result in forever fumbling around with one constantly getting taken out of bags and pockets. Since with iOS11 the gestures have fully gone to crap, actually using the home button is more useful than trying to get iOS to recognize a full swipe up anyway.

All the mini really needs are faster chip, more ram, and pencil support. If the bezel shinks a mm or so, fine and great, but whoopdedo. I dont need it to look different to impress the kids in my class, I need it to work.

Now pardon my while i look for the tiny power button and try to click it three times with one hand to quickly invert the colors because the maps app is lighting up the entire inside of the car...

It sounds like it won’t have a laminated screen which makes it a no buy for me. The current 9.7 budget iPad doesn’t have one and I tried that and it felt really cheap. The screen quality was poor.

I will say, if the Mini doesn’t include a laminated display, that would also put me in the ‘questionable category’ for purchasing it. Not so much necessarily just because of the glare, but it has such a cheap, tactile feel when touching the display, it’s rather off-putting. But that’s just my own personal preference and experience with the 9.7 non-laminated model.

Thick bezels are so yesteryear! Many cheap and mid-tier phones are offering thin bezels.

Tim Cook, time to wake up and give us Apple fans what we deserve for being loyal. Improved versions for the same price point rather than bumping up the price for so called premium versions.

Jobs created the best possible product for us, Cook just creates best return for shareholders and his own pockets.

I am not buying anything Apple this year, you don’t deserve my business.

Tim Cook really innovating big time again here! Kudos. Only how many years they needed to change NOTHING but a processor drop in chip?

I can't wait for the white plastic Macbook to return with a Core i3! I bet we'll get it in 2020
