I personally don't mind just a spec bump. Keep the same design, which isn't too bad anyways, keep the aspect ratio, update the specs properly to 2019 standards (at least A10 or A11 chip), and make it $299. Would buy it immediately

PLEASE - just give me Pencil support - pretty please with sugar on top! You know we'll get a processor bump (my bet is A10 unless they have an abundance of unused A10x), and I really wish we'd get the same laminated screen, but I'm sure that is on the chopping block and will use the same part as in the iPad 2018.

But I definitely would fork over $599 for an iPad Mini Pro with Pencil 2 and 128gb! :D

Sure, bump the specs but downgrade the screen - one step forward and two steps back. I'll keep my both my mini 4s for as long as possible. It's the only model that works well in an airplane cockpit mounted on the yoke.

Spec bump would do it for me to buy straight away. The mini fits in my handbag when traveling but the pro won’t. I could even leave the kindle behind if I had a new mini! Please just release it before April.

How is the screen being downgraded? Unless I missed something, this report suggests that it will have the same form factor as the Mini 4, so same laminated display with presumably the same resolution.

To me, the iPad mini is a product that would very much benefit from an updated design. It's just slightly too wide to be easily held by one hand, as one often does for reading, and the case could be shrunk somewhat while increasing the screen size. That would make the mini the perfect device for reading, IMO.

Why does Apple seem to think its users willing to spend money are also after big devices? Both here and with the phone, there seem to be significant groups of people who want cutting-edge technology and smaller form factors.

If Apple released an iPad mini with a pro design (no home button, Face ID, smaller bezels), then the price would definitely push up and it would no longer be the affordable iPad. A spec bump and compatibility with the Pencil would be enough really.

That’s a shame (for me) but not unexpected.

I’d have bought an iPad Pro-style mini. Having owned the mini, 9.7” and 12” variants over the years, the mini is my go-to size. For anything that needs more real estate I tend to use my MacBook.

Just a specs bump? I’ll probably stick with my mini 4 for the time being.

Apathy, laziness, greed etc. Words that have sadly become increasingly synonymous with Apple over the years.

Whatever the motivation for an update after so long, either do the thing justice FFS or let it RIP.

I couldn’t agree more. It is too wide for one-handed use and, yes, I’m one of those who would be happy to spend more for a top-end product that fits my use case. The current Pros are top-end but just too big to be useful to me.

It will be interesting to see what display they use. The mini 2/3 both had a washed out looking screen. Retina and a major improvement over mini 1 indeed, but the color reproduction was off. Mini 4 solved this big time.

Apple Pencil support maybe... but i can’t see Apple Keyboard Support happening. The 10” keyboard is already too small and Apple would have to design and sell an entirely new keyboard to fit the smaller iPad...

I hope by low cost they don't mean a worse display than what we have on the Mini 4. I'm fine with the same design but there needs to be the latest processor because my family doesn't upgrade iPads often and Apple doesn't upgrade the iPad mini very often either. So don't hamstring it with the processor from the year before last. Update means bringing the important hardware up to date.

Even giving it A12 is giving it last year's processor in a new year. But the A12 is a beast, so that's not so bad.

Tech should of advanced by now in the 3+ years to make this the same price with the upgraded features you're suggesting. That's why everyone is befuddled.

Considering they added Pencil support to the budget iPad 6G, I’d say it’s perfectly reasonable to expect Pencil support. FaceID is another matter.

Many Android users have iPads. The Apple Watch with cellular doesn’t need an iPhone anymore, therefore why not allow any iOS device (or even a Mac) to set up and manage a watch? It would open up the AW to many more customers. A cheap iPad would be a reasonable companion for an Android user who wants an Apple Watch but doesn’t presently own an Apple device.

I’m perplexed by this as well. I doubt adding a smart connector would require a major redesign of the existing case, but it’s one step more than what I got in my 6th Gen iPad which did add Pencil support. Of all the upgrades they should have added to the 9.7” iPad, a Smart Keyboard would have been good for students (which seemed to be the entire reason they added Pencil support in the first place). A SmartKeyboard on the mini seems even more of a stretch given how small it would have to be. Much better to leave the mini to wireless keyboard options. Then again, maybe that’s what the new rumored iPad is supposed to be, a matching companion with SmartConnector, smartkeyboard support.

Why do people keep saying the mini doesn’t need Pencil support because it’s too small? Do you only write on a Letter-sized notepad?
Well the Apple pencil is giant and just don’t suit iPad Mini,if it was a miniature sized stylus (like S Pen on Samsung Note phones) then yes but current pencil is just too big to comfortably write on such small screen.

When the current iPad was updated to the A10 the chip in the iPad Pro was an A10X. Accordingly, this update will likely feature an A12. The iPad Pros will likely go to A13X this fall, with the iPhones going to A13. The mini display will be identical to the 2019 iPad, which will likely be similar to today’s iPad display. This will make the Apple line up two iPads, and two iPad Pros. The iPad mini 7.9 inch for $299, 32GB, 2-3 GB RAM; iPad 10.2 inch $349, 32GB, 2-3 GB RAM also seems likely.
