If they have silicone ear tips, I'm not buying them. Simple as.

I shall take advantage of the Gen 2 fire sale when it comes, and stock up. I simply can't stand silicone ear-tipped earphones.

I’m in the same boat. I cannot stand silicone ear cup/tip earphones. I really think the rumors are wrong on this one. Apple knows silicone ear tips aren’t popular. Makes sense to differentiate the pros: silicone ear tips + noise cancelling vs non silicone ear tips + no noise cancelling.

I’m looking forward to upgrading my Gen 1 airpods as the battery has gotten really bad, but I’ll only get Gen 3 Airpods if they don’t include silicone tips.

I find the AirPods Pro comfortable. They fall out occasionally (sometimes on their own but usually if I yawn or when taking my mask off). I might not be wearing the right tip though (the ear tip fit test says I'm not but they're comfortable).

I don't like the controls for general playback and the lack of configuration options (it's just switching between noise cancellation/transparency modes and Siri – no volume without talking to Siri or changing on a device). I also don't find they're good for talking when on the move (I have to switch off noise cancellation and even then, people can't always hear me properly).

Idk why they keep saying these will have silicone tips...if the only difference for 50 bucks between these and the pros is that the pros have noise cancelling then that’s not a good strategy IMO.

Personally I got terrible pain from the pros and stuck with my Gen 2 AirPods that fit me so perfectly I actually get a slight seal that gives me great bass response. I sleep with them , walk with them. I can wear them for hours forgetting they’re even in my ears. Millions of people have a pretty good or great fit with the standard AirPods or they would not have sold hundreds of millions of them in just a few years.

I don't know if the image of the Airpods 3 is a 3D rendering, but...

There is a clear difference comparing the Airpods 3 on that image with Airpods Pro.

The wired shield on the 3s, covers the whole pod, while on the Pro it doesn't.

Is there a chance that the tips are optional?

I have had issues with all in-ears type of headphones. Had to return the Pros for this reason too. I hope that AirPods 3 will fit similarly to the original AirPods rather than the pro, otherwise they won’t be usable for me.

I would at least like the option. If some people prefer the in-ear ones with silicone tips, so be it, and that can be an available model, but they don't work for me. They're uncomfortable, the seal doesn't last, and I genuinely have weirdly angled ear canals which may make them less likely to work for me; even my doctor found it strange. These things are not made for me. 🤣

Not sure how many people had a bad experience with the Pro design. For me the pros hurt my ears soo badly within 10 minutes of putting them on. Its the design of the Pros which allow the silicone tips to go into the ear but leaving the big chunk of plastic on the outer ear, which hurts my ears.
Also, unsure why people prefer the squeeze on the stem vs the tap controls? Far easier to tap and double tap than to fiddle around trying to squeeze a small stem and risk pulling out the earphone completely.
Hope the AirPods 3 keep the same plastic tip like the OGs as the squeeze thing is not such a big issue. If not, I will be stocking up on the OG airpods
Squeeze controls give you more options. With my regular AirPods, I have double tap with the right AirPod to skip to the next song, and with the left to play/pause. This means I’m missing the option to restart a song or go back to a previous song. Not to mention the few times I use only one AirPod at a time, I’m missing 2/3 of the controls I’d like to have.

Squeeze controls give you all three controls with each AirPod, and I haven’t had any issues pulling them out when using it.

In an ideal world, the AirPods 3 won’t have silicone tips, the AirPods Pro 2 will have redesigned tips. I think we are seeing leakers getting confused about the two. Also highly suspect that these see release before August of this year. Apple will be using June-August to give away their old models during the education sale. Like Jon Prosser said, March is for AirTags and iPads.

Completely disagree with those who said Airpods fits better than Airpods Pro
Airpods Pro has naturally better fit in ears, it holds in there quite firmly
I had every Airpods since beginning, Airpods 1, 2 and Pros
Airpods Pro worth every penny even if its much more pricey
  • Better fit in my ear, i can run and doing gym/sports (not as good as specific earbuds for such usage but good enough)
  • Active Noise Cancelling, killer feature + Transparence mode (quite good)
  • Much better sound quality, standard Airpods are in my bottom tiers when it comes about sound quality (i ve bought cheaper TWS, about 30 bucks and these ones do have better sound quality than standard Airpods)
  • Loving this pinching tactile command, no more miss-click
The only advantage of Airpods over Airpods Pro -> comfort but its highly subjective (once you ve got used, Airpods Pro are as comfort as Airpods)
I wear Airpods during long session, really long, i can spent successively 5 hours or more, it doesn't hurt my ears

I have the Pros and the AirPods 2. I MUCH PREFER the AirPods 2. The Pros create a pressure seal inside my ear causing my jaw to hurt after awhile. Any muscle movement in my jaw, I can hear it in my ear causing fatigue - not to mention that having something impacted in my ear causes pain after a few hours.

Running with the AirPods Pro - I could hear every impact my feet made on the cement (with or without noise cancellation). Just touching the AirPods Pro in my ears sounds like boxing my ears (impact).

Granted... I'm very sensitive to bass - always have been. I can hear bass that most people can't. Makes living in an apartment pretty miserable but ... anyway - so I may be an edge case.

Much prefer the rest in ear AirPods. I can jog with them, swing my head as hard as I can and they won't fall out. They cause no fatigue.

I got my AirPods Pro for airplane travel (as normal AirPods don't work for me on a plane). Of course Covid hit and haven't had the opportunity to travel with them.

I will be very bummed if the AirPods 3 are in ear seal.
I'm exactly the same. Using the Pros is hard walking, talking, eating with them in. It's like I have water in my ears. Walking outside and feeling every footstep in my head is painful. I have 2nd gen Airpods as well and I love how, if you don't have music playing, you can hear everything around you clearly. I also love tapping to change songs. When I try to squeeze my airpod pros to change tracks sometimes they get dislodged and it's annoying. Hopefully they don't ruin the next gen airpods otherwise I have to stock up on second gen

It’s quite obvious that Apple is separating the two products with distinct features as to appeal to most needs: The AirPods Pro are the in-ear option with silicone tips, regular AirPods are for those that don’t like in-ear.

If this wasn’t the case, then Apple wouldn’t have named the current AirPods Pro “Pro” but just AirPods 2 or 3.

The latest leaked photo looks like a new version of the non-in-ear AirPods seeing that the buds habe no silicone tips. I’m guessing this is the successor to the H1 regular AirPods and will have improved sound, battery life and a new chip that’s even better than the H1, probably something Bluetooth 5.1 or 5.2.

Apple will most likely launch these by themselves and then hold onto the AirPods Pro 2 until late 2021 or early 2022 so that every AirPod fan upgrades to these non-in-ear 2021 AirPods and then have to buy another pair when the AirPods Pro 2 launch because they will offer market leading ANC, new features that only work with iPhone 13, etc.

That's great and I'm happy for you, but our ears are different and I can't stand silicone tip style earbuds.

They need to keep making both types if they're going to keep most of their customer base happy I think.

People are talking about silicone ear tips being bad and how they can't see apple going this direction and I am over here thinking maybe they can be worn either way?

Been a while since I bought earbuds but they all tend to come with multiple eartips and some can even be worn without (I know I have brought up yurbuds a million times in these thread but those had like 3-4 tips that you could use, and could even use the buds without). I have some Jaybird Vistas right now and can take the tips off, though the design of those would make wearing them that way uncomfortable for I think anyone.

My wife has gen2 airpods (I think? It was whatever microcenter had on sale this holiday lol) and I don't feel like they would take a massive redesign to accept some silicone tips, should the end user desire them.

My biggest problem with airpods (I have not tried the pro) is they dont stay in during a workout. And the only time I ever have earbuds in is during a workout and very rarely for a quick gaming session where I am not about to get a headset out. Now that I have used these jaybrids though, I really do like the sound customizability that I don't feel you get with any other product in the price point.

AirPods should have a feature that will, when someone says your name, turn off noise cancelation and pause playback. That way, you can respond the annoying person who is trying to get your attention.
I want this feature, but it turns the volume all the way up when someone says my name.

HATE HATE HATE Airpod Pro (in ear) design. Difficult to insert properly, causes pain, always falls out. Tried silicone tips and even memory foam tips. No-go.

Airpod 2 design is fine. Nothing at all wrong with it. Do NOT need smaller stems. Just make the battery life better and make those goddamn fiddly-as-f^^k touch controls work and I'll buy many pairs of AP3's...

Would be nice if they could unify the design so that when want in-canal use & noise cancellation/transparency, we can clip on the silicone tips.

I really like my AirPod Pros when cycling (transparency) as they allow me to hear the outside world AND cut out the wind noise. It’s better than having nothing in my ears. And noise cancellation is great for when you need it, but I really don’t like them when running - bone conduction is amplified and I *hear* every step I take which is annoying. The only way to stop it is to have the volume too loud. For running, normal AirPods are superior (although you lose lots of bass).
