Redesign of the 13" MacBook Pro. Apple kept it alive for a reason. This is it. iMac will get M2, then, boom, M3 MacBook Pro with mesh shading and hardware ray tracing, demonstrated in scary games!

No M3 Pro/Max, that’s due WWDC.

I wish they would loose the notch. Still looks weird. Does not correspond with the menu bar in size and proportion. Once you saw it, you can't unsee it! 😄

Make one in Black and I'm all in.
That actually would drive sales. Not sure how popular gold was.

Would be neat if that was part of the reason the event is later in the day and so close to Halloween, because they really are releasing a black color. There was a patent some time ago about a 'true black' treatment for Al/Tn.

This M3 is gonna be very interesting for people who have skipped M1 and M2 altogether and are stuck with Intel machines or no machine at all.
Being stuck with a machine that does most of everything you want to do is no bad thing. One of my macs is still an Intel mac, and that’s by choice. It still runs Sonoma and it’s as interesting for me to use as my M2 MacBook Air. And interesting depends on the features and use cases… not so much performance increases.

You buy what you need to do the job, and only when it’s not doing what you need it to do should you really be upgrading (for financial common sense, except if you’re just treating yourself etc).

What if this isn’t the Pro/Max MacBook? When Gurman said the 14” and 13” Pro are in short supply, what if the Base M3 MacBook Pro gets redesigned to be more like the Pro/Max MacBooks? Maybe it’s a way to get the 14” Pro, but not as ridiculously expensive as the Pro/Max versions?
BTO 16" MacBooks have 2-3 weeks delivery date
was less than week in the summer iirc

When the M1 was introduced, Apple did not only focus on performance per watt, but also on pure performance, as they abandoned Intel also for their inability to improve performance for 3 years in a row.

With the M2 Apple has come behind both Intel and AMD in CPU performance, and it has come far away from Nvidia in GPU performance.

Now that they have secured the exclusive for 1 year for the 3nm production, it would be fool for them not to take advantage of that, coming out on top in performance again.

That's why I'm expecting something that no one is expecting, because it seems simply foolish: all the pro lineup upgraded to the M3, including the Mac Studio and Mac Pro.

I'm more interested in the M3 performance. I want something that can beat SD Elite X.
That chip won’t be going against the M3 but the M3 Pro and M3 Max if you look at TDP, core count and almost surely price. Qualcomm decided to cherry-pick a comparison with the M2 because it made it look better.

A titanium mbp would be nice. Either way im glad they are getting updated. Need to purchase a laptop by end of year so one of these will do nicely.
But I think you should wait as the 2024 version is going to be so much better than what you have now. You will regret it!

Well I might have been wrong expecting only iMacs this announcement.... if this turns out true.

But honestly, it's weeeeird. They just updated the MBPs to M2.... very very strange move if they release new ones.

Or maybe they announce new iMacs launching this year and present the new MBPs - launching next year to build the hype? (The M2 Sales were low so this might be a strategy....)
Trying to understand how Apple manipulates masses to increase their sales.
I think it's good to watch an learn. 🤔

Performance counts for nothing of the software running it doesn’t improve too. Most people who buy Macs don’t buy for speed. I’d rather have an all round well designed and reliable product over having the fastest.

That would be amazing. I love my Midnight Air, but if a true Black MacBook Pro came out I would bite on that in a heartbeat.

I can’t help but think there’s another reason for this update. Apple typically releases a product so quickly when there’s an issue with the current gen being compatible with an upcoming direction the company is moving in. I’m thinking AAA games will be announced as coming to Mac soon given the GPU improvements in the A17 that the M3 will be based off.
You mean AAA games for that few desparate mac gamers? All serious gamers have PCs or consoles. For any others, Apple Arcade is top of their world.

“so it seems that his predictions have since changed.”

His predictions didn’t change. He was simply wrong. It is amazing this dude is actually paid to just write up random predictions prefaced with could would and might.
The negativity bias is as strong as ever on MR and thus Gurman looks inept.

At large, he's very far from that even if this was wrong.

Amazing news. But no Airs.... I wonder (doubt it) if the M3 has heat issues?
My guess they want to have both the 13 and 15 updated at the same time, but they can't do that just yet since the 15" came out after the 13 was updated, so maybe a sync release in spring-wwdc time.

Them games are coming confirmed!
I actually do expect Apple to elaborate more on the gaming focus we saw for iPhones 15 Pro.

I expect a lot of "gotta go M3 for the ray tracing" sentiment in this presentation.

Maybe Apple's first genuine step towards impressing gamers enough to sell them on a MacBook Pro?

Apple Arcade+, it’s coming. They’ll aim to take a slice of the console game market. Loads of people have Macs, you can do so much on them that you can’t or won’t on a console. If you can play games on it too, it will open up a much bigger area of Apple’s services market.
