I love the mute switch! Either to twiddle with when bored in lectures or just ease of use to make sure your phone is on silent when you really need it to be!

Love using this pic every year for parts leaks

Some people have far too much spare time!

Why?? Nothing is wrong with the toggle.

I disagree. Every iPhone I've had with a case on it, I've found the toggle difficult to flip because it's recessed down into a hole. Some cases make this problem worse than others, but the problems is there. A push button would make it much easier to activate mute while it's in my pocket or if my fingernails are cut very short.

An on/off toggle switch gives you 2 options, and only 2 options.
A push button potentially allows you to toggle through multiple options or "profiles". With the right implentation this is an improvement.

Think about it.

It's their answer to the whole 'we have to have buttons for toggling wifi etc'

A quick tap is your mute/rotation lock but hold it and you going into settings mode. Volume buttons take you from setting to setting and you tap to toggle.

Or perhaps there is no home button on the screen face and this is the new home button

There are two things I don't like about the iPhone:

1. two buttons for volume, which are impossible to locate (at least the one you are looking for) without looking or in the dark
2. The mute swith which has to be pushed in the opposite direction as the length of the iPhone itself.

......

Dude, are you serious right now, really?

Why do people care about this?

I used to wait on baited breath for every new Apple product update, but the problem today is that Apple has too often done trivial updates of their products to a point where it no longer matters when they come out with a new product.

Nothing amazing will appear in the iPhone 5s, just some revamped parts and fixing the issues the iPhone 5 introduced. Its hard to get excited about a product when the company making it is no longer excited about it.

Apple should actually not release an iPhone 5s because I think this will have a very negative impact with investors. It will solidify the idea that they are no longer innovative, only capable of doing minor tweaks on a product.

Hey, I want to love every new product Apple comes out with, but the iPhone series has become stale and decidedly old compared to their competition. iOS needs a major revamp, iPhone needs some revolutionary new design or technology bump. Anything less is just uninspired and boring.

Whoo, new volume buttons and vibrator, better start waiting in line at an Apple store. I mean really? Wake me up when Apple decides to start caring about their products again.

Volume up/down + hardware button for the camera. Mute by pressing and holding volume down. Take my word for it, I'm basing it on nothing at all.

I like the toggle - you can tell what setting you're in by touch without looking (and change it if you need to).

I hate the toggle. Nice to see it finally gone if it is. I like that it's there on the outside, but it's the part that gets the most wear and tear on my devices.

you get wear and tear on your toggle button......

I like that I can tell from feel in my pocket whether it's muted or not.

So a push switch to mute would be welcome, now the volume buttons integrated in one switch please.

Have never pushed one of the volume buttons incidently......

So what you are saying is that you are unable to feel the correct button? There is one switch and two buttons, the upper to increase, the lower to decrease. How can you not do this without looking?

Exactly! I can just reach in my pocket and feel to make sure my phone is on silent without pulling it out of my pocket. This is great for situations where it may be impolite to pull out a phone and just for convenience.

Exactly. I've really come to miss the ability to quickly mute my phone as I could on my old Android, so I'd like to see pressing it go to vibrate->silent->volume. Maybe even allow a long press or a double press to play/pause as another poster suggested.

Great

Another button... THE most unreliable hardware part of iPhones. I've replaced three myself (separate devices, but still). Never seen a toggle go. Not that that means anything.

Agree. How do you know if you're on mute or not now? You HAVE to click it to find out. Then if you get the opposite of what you want you have to click it again. UNLESS they have the switch slide over the button, but that seems like a somewhat janky solution.

Solution: Don't use a case.

That ability won't necessarily go away. If you're in vibrate and the screen is off, press the button and it could vibrate to let you know. Press it again and it does nothing to indicate its silent. Press it one more time and it chirps to let you know you're on volume.

Good riddance to that switch. In many cases its been difficult to use, so I very much prefer a toggle button. Maybe it'll be visibly and physically depressed or something, so you can easily tell if its on mute or not without taking it out of your pocket.

Gahhhhh!!!

I'm SICK of leaks. I want it like the old days, where we had no clue what was going to happen with the next gen iDevice. I HATE leaks on Apple products.

I think a toggle is BETTER than a button - not as easily pressed accidently. Plus, I can see the little orange color easier on a toggle to know that it's in silent/vibrate mode.

Of course, you'll get the snarky Samsung commercials about all the Apple fans waiting in line for a 'button instead of a toggle', and the Samsung sheep will eat it up.

That was my initial reaction, then it occurred to me that the button is so small, it may be difficult to press inadvertently, and it may show an orange dot when depressed. Of course, there will be an entire thread as to the appropriate color ("I never liked orange, because it clashed with my case"...and the like)...

I think one button is more elegant for said situation and eliminates the need to do these mind rotation games in your pocked just to know if it's actual on silent or not. Just press it once and it is definitely on mute, press and hold for unmute.

I believe with this new vibration system you will get some distinguishable feedback about it's current state as well.
