I think this is a natural progression in how we build and adopt new technology. First, there's phase that focuses on innovation and features, because everything is new and shiny. Eventually. it becomes less about the newness of the technology and more about how people use it and integrate it into their lives.

We've passed the point where every release has a new major innovation, and are firmly in the iterative state where there a lot of smaller innovations and changes.

No more than the computer era is in its last phase. Sustaining development with the occasional headline feature, that’s where the Mac was at during the whole 2010s. There’s nothing wrong with that, except for the fact that people think there’s something wrong with that.

Edit: It’s called a sustaining product. It’s like cars, there’s nothing dramatically new in cars and hasn’t really been since the introduction of the first automatic transmission or electric vehicle. People would look at you funny (and rightfully so) if you said that this was “the last phase of automobiles”, though.
Yes, they’re products ultimately but they’re different in what they do. Computers and Macs will always benefit from more performance gains/power efficiency and more graphics (better workflows, better gaming). That’s why the market for new graphics cards and processors are always on demand and thus it keeps computers and Macs relevant. Cars might be more similar to the phones in terms of features and upgrades but automobiles are very tied to means of transportation, so, very different. In regards to ‘last phase’, not referring in the dramatic end of the product sense. Can Apple keep adding small features and sell iPhones for the next 20 years? Sure they might and the smartphone will still be relevant regardless, but there’s this notion of something different in the horizon. Just like we can sort of trace how the iPhone is the spiritual succesor of the iPod.

I have an iPhone 11 Pro and a Pixel 6 and I assure you that GPay isn't just decent, it's better than Apple Pay. Have a look at my spending so far across multiple cards in GPay via this imgur link. I can easily see how much I spent by Merchant across all of my cards in my Google Wallet. You can't do that with Apple Pay; only with the Apple Card.

Both platforms seem to be converging in terms of functionality but I think Google is better in its implementation: move icons anywhere; swiping from the bottom to reveal the app drawer is WAY better than having icons all over your screen or in the app library, which arranges apps stupidly. One of the biggest issues with iPhone is the keyboard. The Gboard is superior - number row at the top and you can hold the period to bring up other punctuation marks.

But Google isn't perfect. It has issue as well. And if you have a Mac and an iPad, it just makes sense to go with iPhone.
Definitely agree with the superiority of the google keyboard. Typing on my Pixel 5 is easier than on any iPhone I've ever owned.

It’s not that much of an upgrade from the 13 pro max, definitely not worth the jump imo. Even the dynamic island is cool but not worth the jump.

NGL I was mesmerized by the ingenuity of Dynamic Island when I first saw it during the keynote. I looked forward to the new iPhone but most of all looked forward to “taking a trip” to Dynamic Island. Well, the trip was sweet and short. The good thing about Dynamic Island is that it’s very subtle, never in your face. Maybe that’s because hardly any apps take advantage of it yet. Understandably, it’s still in its infancy, and because its primary job is status updates, it requires very little user interaction, if any at all. The thing is that there’s only so much excitement and joy one can derive from a status bar. Although Dynamic Island may seem like an overhyped place to visit, I do believe it will end up having the biggest impact on user experience over time as it matures.

But for now, iPhone 14 Pro minus Dynamic Island is just a very, how do I say it without causing fracas, a very underwhelming iPhone, especially if you’re coming from iPhone 13 Pro like me.

assuming you got it from Apple - return it.
For me, none of the features are worth to upgrade my 13PM

I upgraded from the 13 Pro to a Space Black 14 Pro Max (mmmmmmm). I did it for the size alone. When I was blown away by my sister’s 13 Pro Max I was about a week past my return window so pretty much knew all year I’d be upgrading. Glad I waited.
I loved Jet Black. Space Black may be the closest we get to JB. Apple knows how to switch colors to get people interested.

I also went from 13 Pro Blue to 14 Pro Max SB. Part of the reason I went to the Max was bc I’ve had the X,11P,12P & 13p and I needed a form factor change to shake things up. These devices are so good now it’s hard to add ground-breaking features. Loving the PM and Space Black is killer!!
On Wisconsin!

I could never in good conscience tie my finances to anything Google. Just sayin

I have created a list in notes of all the cool features I will get when I upgrade to a iPhone 16 pro max. Gaps are always good when upgrading.

  1. Always on display iPhone 14 meh
  2. Boot up & shutdown chime iPhone 14 meh
  3. Pro motion display 100hz iPhone 13
  4. Macro photography iPhone 13
  5. 48 Mega Pixel iPhone 14
  6. ESim iPhone 14
  7. Improved flash iPhone 14
  8. Qualcomm's Snapdragon X65 modem for faster 5G speeds, lower power consumption, and improved mmWave iPhone 14
  9. Periscope lens rumoured for iPhone 15
  10. USB C rumoured for iPhone 15 :)
  11. Under display Face ID rumoured for iPhone 16. Be gone you cursed island :)
Not that I’m in love with notches or islands but what is everyone going to do w that small spot in the top, middle of your screen when it’s all-screen? I don’t think it’s a big deal at all. When we had a home button and chin/forehead it displayed the time up there. That’s it.

Just my two cents…

I do the iPhone Upgrade Program. I really enjoy the keynotes and get pretty hyped up about whatever the next iPhone is. I’m always happy with my new iPhone but I’ve learned not to expect a huge wow moment. Those are rare and for me include Live Photos, Siri and the OLED display. We all have our favorites. But I will say what normally happens for me are delayed wow moments. Maybe days, weeks or months down the road I’ll be impressed with how good a photo or video looks. I might take notice of how good a song sounds. It’s all about the continual improvement. Each of us gets decide how patient we want to be for the next batch of improvements.
The iPhone's speakers aren't continually improved. Some years they're good and some years they're bad. The iPhone 6+ had the best speaker to date. Yeah it had just the one but it was so rich, warm and bassy.

Oh, one more thing…aren’t we all going to be a little disappointed with any iPhone that can’t project the holographic chess game from the first Star Wars movie? 🤓
I’m still disappointed that the screen can’t be resized. Around when the iPad 1 came out (or possibly even before), there was a video showing an iPhone morphing into an iPad-sized device with a simple two-finger pinch zoom gesture. That just shows how far we are from real “magic” technology. Just imagine you could pull out your mini-sized iPhone from your pocket and resize it to whatever size fits your current purpose with pinch-to-zoom, as easily as zooming into a photo in the Photos app.

The issue is that all every day tasks you can do with an iphone are not constrained or slow since the A13 chip. The experience of web browsing, watching videos, social media and gaming is virtually the same. These phones are already extremely powerful computers that are "underutilized" since current use doesnt need that much more. THe only reasons to upgrade are to get a better camera or longer battery life.

Nothing revolutionary. It’s snappier than my 13 pro. The island is cute. Brighter outside in sun light. Cameras about the same. Aod is nice. I have a Sony A1 for serious 50mp. gps is stronger. For me it’s a fun tradition to update every year. Some years are better the others. I budget for the upgrades. I don’t do the same for iPads macs Apple Watches but I use my phone several hours a day so I don’t mind.

I upgrade my iPhone every year. For me, this was one of the most major upgrades of the last years. 12 PM to 13 PM was absolutely unspectacular. 13 PM to 14 PM changes quite a bit for me: I love the always on screen, the new camera and Dynamic Island. I'm very happy with it.

are you kidding for sure
No I was being serious. For 90%+ of the day I don’t notice any difference. PM has a bigger screen, better camera and battery life but otherwise not much else that affects my day to day use. In reality that is to be expected. The apps and iOS are all still the same and the hardware upgrades are generally incremental.

Always on screen has been a pretty cool upgrade as well.

I upgrade every year and have been doing that since the iPhone 4s. If you’re like me do not expect a major upgrade. Like what did you expect lol? If a friend asked me if they should upgrade their iPhones every year, I would say no there is no major upgrades to warrant doing so every year. I like to have the latest so it does t really bother me if there are major or minimal upgrades than the previous year.

What were you expecting from a year-over-year upgrade?
To date, all the “S” versions had something tangible. Speed, Siri, Security, 3D Touch and Live Photos. Dynamic island is cool, so I’ll take it. I just returned to Pro after two minis. So 11 Pro, 12 mini, 13 mini. The screen is ginormous! Biggest iPhone I’ve ever had.
