NGL I was mesmerized by the ingenuity of Dynamic Island when I first saw it during the keynote. I looked forward to the new iPhone but most of all looked forward to “taking a trip” to Dynamic Island. Well, the trip was sweet and short. The good thing about Dynamic Island is that it’s very subtle, never in your face. Maybe that’s because hardly any apps take advantage of it yet. Understandably, it’s still in its infancy, and because its primary job is status updates, it requires very little user interaction, if any at all. The thing is that there’s only so much excitement and joy one can derive from a status bar. Although Dynamic Island may seem like an overhyped place to visit, I do believe it will end up having the biggest impact on user experience over time as it matures.

But for now, iPhone 14 Pro minus Dynamic Island is just a very, how do I say it without causing fracas, a very underwhelming iPhone, especially if you’re coming from iPhone 13 Pro like me.

That’s one reason I always get the new color. It’s always at least pretty if everything else is the same…the deep purple is gorgeous!

The issue is that all every day tasks you can do with an iphone are not constrained or slow since the A13 chip. The experience of web browsing, watching videos, social media and gaming is virtually the same. These phones are already extremely powerful computers that are "underutilized" since current use doesnt need that much more. THe only reasons to upgrade are to get a better camera or longer battery life.
I would go further and say since the A12 chip. My kids have the air 3 iPads and use them as their main electronic for everything, playing games while doing FaceTime calls in the background, or gaming with Netflix in pip, web browsing etc. Battery life as well is surprisingly long considering how they use them

I agree apple is way ahead of the curve as far as power goes, at this point it’s more about device specific features.

I could never in good conscience tie my finances to anything Google. Just sayin

As I wrote earlier, the two platforms are converging with regards to functionality. Here's another example: www.cnbc.com/2022/08/15/apple-reportedly-plans-to-put-ads-in-more-apps-on-your-iphone.html

I mean, what really is the difference now? High-end Android phones are over $1K and even $2K if you consider foldables. Both will have ad-based businesses. Carriers already sell our data, regardless of platform. It just comes down to preference and ecosystem now, IMO.

I upgrade yearly solely due to the relatively high trade-in value, and this is BY FAR the least impressive overall "upgrade" ever. Dynamic island is cool, but actually MORE distracting when watching videos. An unexpected upgrade going from a 13PM to 14PM is how much louder and clearer the speakers are! The camera upgrades (front and back) are quite minor in my 36 hour experience. I'm not mad about it at all since I was yearning for a silver iPhone anyway (had a gold 13PM), but I'm definitely NOT recommending it to any of my friends with 13 Pros...

Can you please tell me what ngl means?

I went from a 12PM to 14PM just because of the battery life. Not all that different but what Im excited about is my new AWU coming Friday. I’m on a series 4 so it’s a big update for me.

Exactly. What more can they do at this point?
I would say the phone technology as a whole (both Android and Apple) has stagnated. The 7 to X was a pretty nice change but the X to 12 wasn’t a huge change aside from form factor. These last few upgrades faster chip better camera etc. standard fare. I do consider the Dynamic Island a nifty software and hardware upgrade since they had to redesign the sensors.

This is why I just do an upgrade every other year. Makes the upgrade seem more substantial to me. I’m honestly more impressed with the pro motion display than anything. (I came from the 12 Pro Max)

Im still holding onto my 12 pro max and looking forward to the 15. It’s just nothing available in day to day use that makes me want to upgrade at this point.

I just returned to Pro after two minis. So 11 Pro, 12 mini, 13 mini.
Same here. I’ll see how much the extra weight/heft will annoy me in my day-to-day tasks starting Monday when I go back to work.

My backup 11 Pro Max was just too big (lost my Mini 13 on the rollercoaster a few months ago. No case either so when the lost and found recovered my phone it was in a really damaged condition).

I mean… the iPhone 14 is like a iPhone 13S. It’s still a great phone but why anyone with a 13pro would upgrade is beyond me.

It’s an iPhone. As a lot of other people have said, it’s an incremental upgrade. It’s not like on the days of the S models where a plain number got a redesign and iOS really didn’t get a ton of new everyday features.

the most exciting feature of every new iPhone has always been the camera. It's basically the only physical feature that gets a decent upgrade yearly. The 48 MP camera is a big jump & it's exciting. Looking forward to using it more. the new notch is ok. didn't like the new purple color. A16 is tiny improvement over A15. AOD isn't that groundbreaking. I turned it off personally for max battery life. So if you are into photography then the yearly camera improvements are pretty exciting. cinematic 4k video is another improvement I'm looking forward to using as well.

Definitely agree with the superiority of the google keyboard. Typing on my Pixel 5 is easier than on any iPhone I've ever owned.
The default iOS keyboard is surprisingly bad. I had to use it for a couple weeks as the iOS16 beta broke third party keyboards, and it drove me mad.

Gboard on the iPhone is a big improvement, feels just as good as typing on my old Android phones, with the exception that the layout is still forced by iOS, so you can't have the same easy access to the comma as you can on real Gboard.

I think I set my expectations reasonably low, no disappointment here. I think the main thing that I was interested in trying was the always-on display; and that has proven to be more interesting / useful than I had guessed it would, I am loving it! Worth it for most people? Maybe not, depending on your situation. But I’ve been pleasantly surprised so far. I could live without it, but I am enjoying it.

For sure though, iPhones are already so good for the last few generations that it’s harder to sell upgrades to the average user as long as their existing phone is running well.

I find the AOD not as apple like as I thought. Maybe it’s too bright Sometimes and I swipe up before the screen actually on and there is slight lag from AOD to on screen. Also no shortcuts to camera or flashlight unless you tap the screen first

I couldn't wait to get the squared off edges of the iPhone 13 Pro Max, coming from my iPhone 11 Pro Max with it's rounded edges. Now, however, I wish the iPhone would go back to rounded edges. The squared off design of the iPhone 4 was marvelous but it doesn't translate to the larger models for me.

Is it your first year on year upgrade? It is for me as well, and I had a similar feeling.

Previously, I went from an iPhone 11 to the 13 Pro Max. Hell of an upgrade. I was expecting the same thing this time going from the 13 Pro Max to the 14 Pro Max. After upgrading I do wonder if it was worth it. It's definitely a better phone, just not the same level of change.

But I can sell my 13 Pro Max and recoup a decent amount since it is in pristine condition, not to mention I also saved on tax as I purchased the phone through salary sacrifice with work.

I suppose what I'm getting now is the satisfaction of always being on the latest, not dealing with any battery degradation, and selling my old device before it depreciates any further. It's just a different feeling to doing a huge upgrade.
exactly the same feelings.. and surprised that (so far) my AT&T cellular service in 5G or 5G+ is 'slower' and even LTE is slower than with my 13 Pro Max. The 14 Pro Max has Qualcomm's X65 modem; so I expected it to be faster not slower. Maybe there are carrier settings that need updating?
