You are the 2nd person recently who's grazed or bumped the watch into a wall and ruined it. I've seen $30 watches thrown onto the ground and stomped on with not even a scuff. This thing is not very well made at all.

The problem with this watch is that the glass is right on the surface and not protected or recessed. Drops and impacts against any object are very likely to hit the glass first.

Like others said, this is a good time to turn to eBay. I hate it when people sell brand new unopened devices to make profit, but this is a different situation.

Well I guess you'll hate this:

I purchased 4 Sport Apple Watches, flipped 3 of them on eBay, sold within hours, and it paid for my watch.

I've ruined a watch that way, to be fair it was a cheaper watch, like $200 but the same thing happened.

this is exactly why I didn't get the sport. I had never broken a iPhone screen ever owning every model. I didn't ever use cases, until I got my 6 plus. Broke the screen the first week and I am still not sure what did it. I didn't drop it, there was ZERO damage to the body of the phone. Just a shattered screen in the corner. I now use a case to say the least.

This ion-x glass is BS and breaks way too easily. I cannot believe they are using it for a watch screen as wrists are much more of a risk for a impact.

Or the extra $200 for the stainless steel which has a sapphire crystal and better looks to boot. :D

Well, almost every other "smartwatch" that Consumer Reports tested also uses Gorilla Glass and has a similar rating. The Moto 360 does not and got a worse scratch rating than average. The Apple Watch stainless steel, believe it or not, is the only mainstream one right now with sapphire.

Consumer Reports likes the Sport. The Moto "315" has an even more scratch-prone crystal. The Sport is rated higher than any other enhanced watch they tested except the Apple Watch stainless steel (rated higher) and the LG G Watch R (tied the Sport). The LG, Gear S, etc all use gorilla glass like the Sport.

Why wouldn't the first year cover accidental damage?

cuz warranties never cover accidental damages? they are meant for factory faults. how awesome would that be if I could smash my iPhone screen and get it replaced for free in the first year.

That sucks, and is the reason why I've gone with SS (though it hasn't arrived yet :().

For people wondering how a sapphire screen would probably fare, here is my current watch, which I have worn every day for over four years:

The sapphire screen is even more exposed than on the Apple Watch. It is in 100% perfect condition. A couple of weeks ago I scraped it against a cinder block wall, hearing a crunching sound. Oops! Not a mark.

It has the advantage of having a ceramic strap, which is twice as tough as steel, so is super resistant. But the steel and sapphire watches should be very resistant to life's knocks.

I thought I would be fine because I've never scratched or shattered an iPhone screen but as people have pointed out iPhones aren't strapped to our wrists. I was coming upstairs from my basement and my watch lightly grazed the concrete wall. It was literally nothing. I couldn't believe when I looked and saw the corner cracked. I should of went with SS I'm pissed. Anyone know what apple charges to replace a screen? Inc won't bother until stock is more abundant prob get this fixed and sell it and buy SS

I have a hard time grasping you just slightly grazed this thing against a concrete wall.

My 6 Plus has fallen face down on concrete in two occasions from ear height and the screen is still pretty much scratch less. The aluminum back has some dents but that's it.

The Ion glass has at least for me proven to be quite durable.

AppleCare+ adds up to two incidents of accidental coverage. It's more than an extended warranty — I think that's why they add the +. Maybe its different in Europe — I think you have laws that require two years of protection. They would not replace the screen for free — there is a deductible for accidental damage, but it's cheaper than the regular repair cost.

I'm telling you light graze didn't even smash into it. I was shocked myself like you I've put my phones thru torture and they've never broken that's why I got the sport to begin with

It's only recently that we've been able to actually get AppleCare+ in the UK.

I'll be getting it for my SS today

Damn man, that's nuts. At least it's at the corner where it doesn't get in the way of the display.

My rationale behind getting the Sport was to wait until Gen 2 and to see if I really could find the Watch useful. So far it's been great and I now would feel weird without it.

I feel the same way plus the fact that the SS SB is configured at $1099 only and nothing else.

If somebody got the AppleCare. Accidental damage would cost $79 I believe.

Sapphire would make no difference to that IMO - that's a chip, not a scratch.

The problem with these is the way the glass is curved out. For the people saying their regular watches are fine - the design of watches means that it's very unusual for the glass to take anything other than a glancing blow - sliding along, which is when the glass is at its strongest.

For the Apple watch, it's very easy to give the edge a direct hit.

well he wrote "the first year cover ..." and therefore i dont think he was talking about apple care+

Watches, especially thicker ones, will get banged around. Its happened with all of my watches before. The most common place: the seatbelt buckle. That bugger always gets me when im taking off my belt.

Isn't sapphire more brittle than glass? It's more hard so resistant to scratches but more brittle so it probably would have broken more

Yes as mentioned here a hundred times sapphire is more brittle but from my experience is VERY hard to break. Still is the preferred crystal material by the best watch makers and people who wear them.

Sapphire is more brittle than glass and breaks easier. It's advantage is it doesn't SCRATCH as easy.
