I would hold out until you can buy a replacement sapphire glass cover, then use the guides on iFixit. You'll have the stronger, scratch resistant aluminum body AND the scratch resistant sapphire glass.

Sapphire would make no difference to that IMO - that's a chip, not a scratch.

The problem with these is the way the glass is curved out.

For the Apple watch, it's very easy to give the edge a direct hit.

That's a scratch, not a chip. See the example above. The sapphire would not have scratched. It might shatter, but that would be more likely from a direct hit.

----------

this is exactly why I didn't get the sport.

This ion-x glass is BS and breaks way too easily. I cannot believe they are using it for a watch screen as wrists are much more of a risk for a impact.

It's what just about every competitor uses, including LG and Samsung. Motorola uses something even less scratch resistant.

My guess is that Apple wanted to use sapphire, and that's what the GTAT agreement was for. When GTAT couldn't deliver, they sourced sapphire from more traditional suppliers and limited it to the higher end watches.

I thought I would be fine because I've never scratched or shattered an iPhone screen but as people have pointed out iPhones aren't strapped to our wrists. I was coming upstairs from my basement and my watch lightly grazed the concrete wall. It was literally nothing. I couldn't believe when I looked and saw the corner cracked. I should of went with SS I'm pissed. Anyone know what apple charges to replace a screen? Inc won't bother until stock is more abundant prob get this fixed and sell it and buy SS

sorry to hear that, but this exactly why I paid the extra $200 for the sapphire screen

cuz warranties never cover accidental damages? they are meant for factory faults. how awesome would that be if I could smash my iPhone screen and get it replaced for free in the first year.

As has already been pointed out, we were talking about Applecare+ which would cover up to two incidents of accidental damage (with a deductible) at any time during two years.

Apple care acquired. I'd like to swap it out myself to sapphire but who knows if that will even work and if something else goes wrong I'm screwed warranty wise. So this is better. I'm not going to get it fixed right away but at least I know I'm covered if I wack it on something else and it gets much worse

If an apple employee sees this it's a clear case of fraud. They can get your info from macrumors admins by warrant if needed and cancel your apple care

They could do that. But I'm giving them $120+ to replace a $20 part so they still win in the money department and I still lose. So I guess it doesn't really matter

♪ Why can't the English [or Americans] teach their children how to speak? This verbal class distinction by now should be antique! ♪

But yes, maybe you should have gone with the SS. Or perhaps your choice of forum name was tempting fate just a little bit too much... ;)

(Sorry, that's all I've got.)

Haha. I've used this name for everything for a long time. I tried not to put cracked in my post for that reason but you guys are very observant haha

Honestly, you get what you pay for. I understand buying the sport model because it's the same watch. But I would never complain about the material and quality. It's $350. Most of it is the watch part. Don't expect wonders.

this is exactly why I didn't get the sport. I had never broken a iPhone screen ever owning every model. I didn't ever use cases, until I got my 6 plus. Broke the screen the first week and I am still not sure what did it. I didn't drop it, there was ZERO damage to the body of the phone. Just a shattered screen in the corner. I now use a case to say the least.

This happened to me on my iPhone 6. I didn't drop it or anything but it only took a few days and it had a small crack in the glass. Mine was at the bottom of the glass, the part between the home button and the Lightning port. Made an appointment at an Apple Store to get it checked and walked out with a new device (no Apple Care + btw). The genius told me these damages can be caused by the
high tension (don't know if this is the right word in English) on the glass, so minor bumps can cause it to crack. This is completely normal and happens every now and then.

I don't know how they're gonna handle it because yours already a few months old but I guess it's worth a try to go to an Apple Store and get it checked! Maybe they can help you. Good Luck :)

As far as sapphire vs ion-x cracking you could do 100 different comparisons and get different results every time.

Here is a drop test that the sapphire fails but the ion-x doesn't.

https://youtu.be/XwGtotCd_IA

However repeat the test and I'm sure the result could vary. The sapphire should be more scratch resistant though.

If you purchase your watch with a credit card, check to see if they cover accidental damage in first 90 days or something. My AMEX covers accidental damage in first 90 days.

Discover also has accidental damage protection up to $500 for the first 90 days.

These drop tests can really vary depending on the angle of the drop, etc. People say that the sapphire is more prone to shattering, but this is the first time I've ever actually seen it. I couldn't even find any pictures of broken stainless watches on Google a day or two ago when I tried. Of course that may simply be because there are less of them out there in the wild.

Ya Kinda why I got SS. I'm pretty much running into walls all the time.

Get the apple watch case and no one will see it.

I have AC+ and went in the day I noticed it. They said there was nothing they could do and were not set up yet to do the $99 s been replacement (or what ever the cost was) so I had to use one of my claims to get the phone replaced...

Well I guess you'll hate this:

I purchased 4 Sport Apple Watches, flipped 3 of them on eBay, sold within hours, and it paid for my watch.

I guess in the end it comes down to how much people are willing to pay for, but I still think it's wrong to take away orders from people online. A lot of people have to wait until June. Fewer people would have to wait that long if shameless scalpers didn't exist.

I ca definitely see a chip there.

It's only fraud if they explicitly asked you if it was damaged and you explicitly said no. I doubt they bothered asking.

As for the MacRumors comment... I lol'd.

Yup, it's fraud.

Yup, it's fraud.

Only if he files a claim for that damage. It isn't fraud if he accidently drops it out a 2nd story window onto the ground and files a claim for that. And you'll notice that OP said he was going to wait for another issue before taking it in.

I am not a lawyer though. Are you?
