The naked black phone disappears. Like if it's laying on something dark, there isn't anything shiny to make it stand out. This makes me exta careful as to where it is. I could see lifting up whatever it's sitting on and have it fall. I wanted so bad to have this phone be naked but more n more I see I should case it.

Be more careful. I've only ever dropped my phone twice, both of which were them falling out of my backpack. Do people just have slippery hands or something?

Accidents happen, no matter how careful you are. When I first bought my 2G, I was extremely nervous and careful not to drop my phone, but sure enough when I was on the way to the car, the phone dropped.... luckily it didn't hit the ground but dangled a foot or two above the ground thanks to them not coming loose from the earbuds, or the earbuds from my ears.

OP, I'm not sure if there is any coverage for dropping your phone, but I hope you can have a good ending. Perhaps you can buy a case that covers the back, and I'm sure we'll see screen and back replacement kits before long.

seriously people need to tone it down a bit. Its a phone, people drop them. They should be somewhat durable because of that or dont make your (*&^(* phone out of glass if its fragile enough to break from a one foot drop.

Ive had countless phone over the years, even the phones i had in college, which were dropped all the time didnt break.
The iphone is a wonderful device, durable for real world use its not.

pics and video or it didnt happen
The editor-in-chief at Engadget and David Pogue don't need to "post pics or videos or it didn't happen".

On that note, we've actually seen the iPhone 4 tossed with and without a bumper across a room (one hit a wall) with no issue, and we dropped ours pretty hard from about two feet up onto tile with nary a scratch.

Oh CRUD!!! Set the iPhone 4 on a truck hood in a parking lot--it slipped off and fell 5 feet to pavement! Not a scratch. Whew!!

The cracks in the rear glass in that pic above look cool. If that happened to mine and it didn't obstruct the camera I'd just leave it.

pics or it didnt happen...

lmao i love it when people say that to everything, why would someone lie about breaking his iphone 4 back on tile and then ask for help on how to go about getting it fixed with protection plans??

Because some people are quick to criticize this phone.

if you go to the Apple store and state the phone came this way, its early enough for them to believe it

they are generally pretty generous when it comes to that
I remembered i dropped my ipod video back in the day and went in and said that i didnt drop it, the parts on the inside just became loose, and low and behold I walked out with another ipod video :D

Okay, so I can get people trying to justify how getting an insurance policy on a phone after you've damaged it isn't really fraud. I don't agree (just give this a go with your car, house, etc) but it's easier to justify then the option of completely lying about it! Then to turn around and say that they are normally pretty generous to TRUST you?

People that do things like that are the reason why companies have a hard time trusting their customers and the rest of us who CAN be trusted gets the consequences of those people. It's a shame.

Wow that sucks I would cry. Try taking it back to the apple store. I've heard of the apple store giving people a replacement phone without cost as a courtesy. They are generally nice people.

I've only dropped my 3G once (I forgot I had it in the chest pocket of my scrub when I went to change) in the 2 years I regularly used it and it ended up with a 1/2 mm long scratch on the screen. I am putting wrapsol ultra on my 4 and treating it like fine china. lol

Just accidentally dropped my iPhone 4 in the bathroom and the rear glass shattered on the tile. I bought the phone with Amex business platinum. Has anyone used Amex's purchase protection before to replace a damaged iPhone? The phone is EXTREMELY fragile. I should've been more careful, but the 3G/3GS was a much tougher phone. The new and improved glass that supposedly 20x stronger then normal glass is ********. It was dropped from maybe 3 feet tops and has a spider crack on the rear glass. :(

I have an AMEX gold and used to have an AMEX Platinum. I replaced my wife's 3G phone with purchase protection about 2 years ago when the screen cracked within 90 days of buying it. The process included sending them photos of the cracked screen. They made no argument on the claim and refunded the purchase price of the phone back to my card. I then took it into Apple and replaced it for the original purchase price. AMEX will have your back. File the claim; you'll have no issue getting the refund, might have more of an issue finding an iphone 4 to replace the shattered one :)

Did they make you return the phone or were the pics sufficient. I was thinking of taking pics of mine but (1) my iPhone was my camera and (2) it was dropped in water. Not sure how you photo that. Way back when I made a claim on a computer (warranty issue) and they just asked that I get a repair bill. My question is will I have to send in my phone or can I get something from able saying water damage?

You're still going to shell out at least 400 bucks though... You don't think Amex is going to cover the price to buy a full priced phone do you?
Wrong... Amex will replace the device.
The coverage is for full replacement, not cash equivalent.
You are required to send them the damaged phone though.

I have used the purchase protection three times over since becoming a card member in 97 and each time that just credited the account. Then only distinction was it was not for an apple product, but for a pair of jeans and microphone and something else that i can't remember. In two of the cases I went out and bought the same things. In the other, I didn't. So. you are WRONG! Not trying to antagonize, but please be civil. No need for caps at the dude.

Wow!! Old thread being revisited. I did pretty much the same thing and bought a replacement rear cover from eBay and replaced it. Piece of p*** really, undo the bottom two screws either side of the charging port and the rear case slides up and pops off (reverse to put the new one on)

If nothing else is wrong with the phone, you need to buy a pentalobe screwdriver from ebay, and a replacement backing. Both will cost you about $25 total. Take the two screws off the bottom and slide the back glass up and remove. Reverse process to install new glass. Badabing Badaboom. Alot easier than trying to file a claim and a lot cheaper than buying a new phone.

I know this is an old thread, But i just thought I'd note that a shattered back can be replaced by Apple for $25, or you can do yourself with any of the replacement backs available inline for between $10 and $80, depending on te material.

I've seen a number of iPhone 4s hit the ground and none broke. I saw a naked one (no case) plop outta a girls dress when she got outta the car, fell on the concrete parking lot. Nothing.

Then again I think this is why Apple's moving away from the dual glass idea this time around. Too many people realizing a glass sandwich has the potential to shatter.

Okay, I will attempt to answer your question...

My dad had issues with his iPhone 3G(S), and it was out of warranty. He made a CLAIM, and got refunded for the phone (which was $199 plus tax)... so if you get the money from the claim, use the $199 to replace the phone at a genius.

But how did you return it to Apple? Didn't amex want the phone?

As for the reference for scamming apple, if you own a amex card you PAY for this privilege. trust me, retailers hate the amex card. and you gotta pay for it. And, if anything, apple is the one who benefits. They get a phone they can fix and you pay for a fairly new one.
