These new icons all look as though they were pilfered from some class assignment for beginning graphic designers. For example, what does the icon with different sized colored circles represent, versus the NBC-peacock ripoff logo? Is that a Safari logo or a Compass logo? And what does an airplane, a movie projector, and a coffee cup all have in common to share one icon? Is that Passport?!

Uhh yeah, the app you use to pay for airline tickets, movie tickets and Starbucks coffee... That would be passport hahaha

Why would anyone need the background to change depending on the angle of the phone? Seems to me that's much less important than what the temp is.

I personally would like to see both, but I'm not sure why someone would think the current temp (and preferably an indication of the current weather conditions on the icon as well) would be unimportant — lots of people work in buildings where they don't have immediate access to a window to see what it's like outside.

And working in a building necessitates a constant appraisal of the weather outside or do you only really need to know it when you are actually ready to go outside???? I, for one, don't obsessively need to know what weather I'm missing out on by being inside. Is it a hardship to press the weather icon before you leave to figure out if you need a coat or an umbrella?? The local weather is in the Notification Center and in iOS7 you don't need to unlock to get that screen so in the same amount of of clicks, you can get the weather that way (since you have to unlock your phone to see the weather icon you want to constantly update). Oh, I take that back. If you have to type in four numbers to unlock, it's FEWER clicks to view the weather in the Notification Center.

Though I like the look of the bright & colorful UI, I'm imagining these stock icons on my device, interspersed with a couple dozen others from third parties in the old style that look terrible together.

According to your logic, maybe they need to change it like a percentage just like the MacBook too?
I don't see how the dots are actually using less vertical space either...
Last but not least, as I have pointed out, the dots sardine-packed together are not really easy to use for some older folks or anyone with less than ideal eyesight...
We criticize because we love the products but it disappoints this time.

The dots indicator is BIGGER than the bars so it would be EASIER for older people to see. Because the dots use less vertical space, they can be LARGER and easier to see within the same-sized header.

First time I have ever been disgusted by an Apple product. I was expecting Apple to do away with the extreme skeumorphic stuff here and there, but this neonfest and ugly icons are horrible. I have a feeling all of this is in effort to gear up for the chineese market. As a european, It goes all the way against my taste.

This, plus what I think is the biggest issue with iOS7: they stick to their paradigma that the first thing you see in the OS are a number of tasks (apps) that you can execute in order 'to do things'. I would have rather seen them find a way where the OS is more interactive with and adaptive to the user experience.

I would have loved the entire color scheme to be more of pastel and less of neon. I.e. less saturated colors.
This would also preferably be used with a bit less gradients, or at least less 'strong' gradients.

I actually like the idea of using light, clear colors, because it signals a positive feeling. But the saturation is too much.

Anyone else?

Because men love pastels? I'm a woman and I don't want pastel icons. I love the contrast of intense colors.

Viewing these side by side, I much prefer the depth and contrast of the old icon set. There is a bit too much "glossy" reflection to them, but if that were dialed back they'd be fine. IMHO, the biggest losers in a head-to-head comparison are:

Settings (changing prefs is like changing the tire on a Mercedes? Or clearing the leaves from off the top of your home's central air fan shroud?)
Game Center (bubbles?)
Camera (agree with previous poster--SLR silhouette?)
Photos ("Tonight on NBC--the Partridge Family! C'mon, get happy!")
Newsstand (what, only comic books?)

Also, aren't most of these icons still "skeuomorphic" in a sense, just flattened and simplified? If Safari is metaphorically a "compass", why can't it stlll look like one?

The old set are too shiny and gum-droppy, but just a diet of less reflection and drop shadow would be fine. Too-clever-by-a-half uber-minimalism with a neon/pastel color palette borrowed from Make-up Barbie eyeshadow choices? Keep it. Repeated viewing of it on a daily basis might necessitate testosterone replacement therapy for power users.

I'm not the kind of person who hates a new look for the sake of being new. I loved OSX compared to OS9, and pretty much all of the evolutions of of X since then have been welcome. This sucks.

I hate to say it, but maybe Ive should stick to aluminum and glass.

I would only take seriously that last bit of your comment.

Really hope that weather one becomes real... that'd be awesome.

I also love how polarizing the changes in iOS 7 are. Everyone wanted something new, they got it... and now are upset about it. =D

I'm confident that Apple will adjust things as they move closer to release. They're not submitting iOS7 to developers 3 months early so that they can ignore all their requests. Some app icons seem to have been universally rejected so they'll be getting a flood of feedback on them.

The camera app is one of them. If they're going to drop skeuomorphism, then don't take half measures. Get rid of the old camera metaphor and use one that better represents cameras today: a lens works well.

I like this one for the camera...

No, please, no more icons with lenses....

It's an iPhone, has internet connection 100% of the time.

They can disable real-time updating in iOS for iPod Touch, iPad, etc.

For you, it might have Internet connection 100% of the time. Personally, I don't want an updating weather. iOS 7 is already going to consume more battery than iOS6 it seems, beta or otherwise.

That safari logo is so much better. To me the one Apple have done sticks out like a sore thumb. I'll send Jonny the link.....;-)

I liked the icons when they first showed them. But the more I look at them, the more they look like something my 2nd grade students would like.

Actually the Chinese hates the icon design as well, especially the Safari one according to the comments in weiphone.com (the biggest Chinese iFans site).

Honestly I prefer the 'old' weather icon. It'll probably drain the battery though..

Apple really screwed up here, got my hands yesterday on iOS and I was shocked. The whole system has "some" improvements but NONE of them where things you coudn't solve with third party apps or with a hacked version. Yes, it's handy that most of the issues like turning on/off wifi is one click away but is that...is THAT REALLY worth shouting "oooooooh Apple You did it again!" ????? I understand that Apple fanboys, which behaviours I tend to descibe as extremely dogmatic, will always !! applaude for everything Apple does but seriously there have been made serious mistakes here. A The Verge reporter wrote a good article about the mistakes in design and the way the system behaves...

I'm so dissapointed in Apple that with a much bombastic performance on stage the actually dare to present this new iOS as some kind of new revolution.

I'm pleased though with the new Mac Pro.

I can't believe there are 140 comments on a story about app icons.

that's because Apple came up with historical ugly designs. And since Apple is alway's up front when dealing with design issues. It's news mate ^^

Game Center is based on playful circles, which makes sense. Photos is an abstract sunflower. The artwork looks much better and sharper on retina displays.

Yep, Photos look nice imho. I even basically like the Safari icon, it only needs some little modification to look pretty cool.
