I do not get the whole Apple is going to make an ultra cheap netbook deal. The emate was $800! They considered that to be their ultra cheap low cost portable notebook. It didn't have color screen and it ran on newton os. Do we really want that again?

Well there are different times now with 299 dollars EEEs and other Netbooks around. It's a fast growing market and I think Jobs wants a slice of this pie. Apple took over the mp3 player market. They now have the knowledge how to use the economy of scale and alot of the iPhone technology can be reused. Check what they charge for an iPod touch. Add a small keyboard and make the screen bigger and for 100 dollars more they could probably could make a Netbook.

Well, this rumour pretty much confirms that the next MacBooks will be aluminium? So, no more people saying: "The next MacBooks would still be plastic".

Another question, it does not appear then that Apple is moving to 16:9 ratio displays (screen sizes) but can there be a 13" 16:9 ratio MacBook?

About the display in the trackpad

The display in the touchpad looks interesting. It would work if the glass on it was matte so it doesn't reflect the main screen and your finger does not stick like on the iPhone (try dragging your finger on the iPhone glass at a flat angle... it sticks).

The dock on the trackpad would be weird though... how does it know if you want to tap something on the bottom of the main display or open an app from the dock? How do pros (who love having lots of icons in the dock) cope with the small space? I don't use the one finger tap on my Macbook at all, I use the button. So you could just make one finger taps to interact with what's displayed on the trackpad.

It could make sense for full screen applications so the HUD or inspector is displayed on the trackpad. For instance, you're watching a video in Quicktime and you have the controls on the trackpad, dimmed to not distract from the actual video. Or you could assign a widget to the trackpad, imagine tile game or webclip. Or how about trackpad Growl?

All the above are mockups!!!!

All I can say is PLEASE NO don't put only glossy glass screens on these devices. If they are glossy only MBP's people just will not buy them.

Definitely. If the MBP line goes glossy-only, I might have to reconsider my next computer purchase. As a graphic designer, I'd find it extremely annoying dealing with the glossy screen - but who knows if that'd make me overcome my love of OSX. :)

Let's just hope they find a way to do the black screen bezel and maintain the matte finish. I do really like the look of the iMacs.

I hope the isight becomes optional. It scares me so I had to put tape over mines:(
I know what you mean. Everytime I don't use my webcam, I put it to the side so that it can't see a thing. But I thought the iSight has an indicator that shows when it's enabled?

iMac and MacBook Air mix, what I always wanted!

On a less sarcastic note, I hate how everyone keeps saying that everything is going to look like the MacBook Air, it really gets annoying. I'm expecting that they either keep plastic, or using white aluminum.

Apple still hasn't learned that crippling the MacBook to get MBP sales doesn't work and is just plain annoying. I really hope they just make ONE line of computers.

Why would you gear a professional computer for coffee shop use? I'm a motion graphics designer and my DVD burner in my MBP has saved the day countless times. Right now, I can grab my MBP and show up to work onsite anywhere without a bag-full of gadgets and add-ons. I'm doing that right now and only bring headphones, my eSATA card and power adaptor.

Taking away full-sized DVI, optical drive, and Firewire 400 would SUUUUUCK.

First, I was talking about the MB, not the MBP.

Second, I see plenty of people doing work at coffee shops.

Third, I don't see why everyone needs to carry an optical drive everywhere we go just so you can take your computer to work without having to keep an external optical in your bag.

Fourth, laptops are about portability. Many people who need a professional computer for work use a desktop computer.

Hey guys, MacRumors newbie here.

First off, in regards to the posted image, I personaly think this is real and not some sort of Photoshop / Render. (I say that because I use Photoshop every day and can spot fakes miles off! Also a dab hand at 3D.) Annnnyway, my reasons.

If you notice, the dock is the right way up for the user, not upside-down of which it would be if it was a reflection. This rules out the big 'fake' claims from people judging on first impressions.

iPhone/Touch has already shown the world how how acurate it can be when it comes to moving something. I ask any of you with one to load a large image and move it about on screen, and tell me how deadly accurate the movment is. It's only a slight bit of code to make to turn that into a trackpad with added bonuses. Hell, the iPhone screen is very, VERY slim and can display videos/images/whatever, so why not use that as a trackpad? Would probably even fit in a current MacBook/Pro (with slight modifications) and sit flush with the body depth wise.

The image represents what alot of people have guessed. Black around the screen, Black keys on an alu body. Proportion wise and thinks lining up (edge of keyboard to the edge of the device, for example) are perfect and that to me cuts out a Photoshoped image attempt.

I vote it's the real deal. The only thing I can think of is moving the mouse about and accidently tapping a dock object could get very, very stressfull after a while, so I hope its an option and can keep the dock on screen instead. I've used Windows all my life but used a Mac for the last 12 months and I am converted. Selling my PC and by the time I get the monies these new Macs should of been released (Mid October.)

If they come out sooner, then that's a BIG bonus! Either way, I'm giving Apple money in Oct, new MacBook or not.

EDIT: Forgive me if I am wrong, but that's a MacBook, not a pro? I say that because of the positioning of the DVD drive, and how close to the edge and central opening slot it is? Well, judging by looking at a current MacBook!

Why do these people never take a few seconds of video footage. I might be convinced then.

I know what you mean. Everytime I don't use my webcam, I put it the side so that it can't see a thing. But I thought the iSight has an indicator that shows when it's enabled?

Er.... the green LED next to it is hard wired so when the webcam is on the light is on. When yours isn't on, something's broken.

PS: you don't see the light when it's not on on Macbook Pros and aluminum iMacs. Or do you mean the external iSight?

I'm expecting that they either keep plastic, or using white aluminum.
White? Anodized white? :(

Apple still hasn't learned that crippling the MacBook to get MBP sales doesn't work and is just plain annoying. I really hope they just make ONE line of computers.

Unfortunately that will propably mean less capable "high end" than before, considering their recent sole focus on lowest common denominator consumer products.

Speaking of which:
Third, I don't see why everyone needs to carry an optical drive everywhere we go just so you can take your computer to work without having to keep an external optical in your bag.

Fourth, laptops are about portability. Many people who need a professional computer for work use a desktop computer.

Sure. All professionals are tied to a desk

Good point.

I'd also be disappointed if it lacks DVI and FireWire 400. It'd be a shame if I had to buy three accessories (mini-dvi to dvi, fw400-800, and an antiglare sheet) to essentially patch up a new computer to bring it on par with my existing computer. Seems like taking a giant leap backwards.

I can see it fitting in with Apple's progressive stance on peripheral support though - dropping technologies that they see becoming obsolete in the near future. They bitched when the TiBook didn't have a floppy drive - but you don't see anyone using floppies these days, do you :)

Light or no light it just makes me so damn paranoid to have a camera right in front of me. Its like that song "I kinda feel like someone is watching me". The fact that the light does come on every time I turn on the macbook does not help matters.

The Mac Book release has been delayed because of the economic crisis.

Yeah right, Chairman Bernake. Suuuuuuuuuuuure.

That may very well be your opinion, but don't frame it as a 'matter of fact' statement.

I'm not sure I agree with Apple making both the MB and MBP line look indistinguishable from one another. I'd be pis*ed if I were to buy a new MBP when they came out and people mistook it for a MB. I guess the vice-versa crowd wouldn't mind their MB being mistaken for a MBP though.

Bleh.... I'll just stick with my 12" PB knowing that, while it's certainly nowhere near the fastest, it was the best notebook Apple ever produced

taking the LED screen from the macbook air will make it cutting edge but Steve Jobs always has other ideas up his sleeve. he'll find some way to make it even better by next year.:apple:

Save Firewire!

Maybe I'm speaking for a small number of Pro users here, but I NEED the extra Firewire ports on my Pro laptop! I've held on to my G4 Powerbook for so long because it has the ports I need -- and have used A LOT -- in my business: FW400 for cameras and drives, FW800 for high speed storage and PC Card slot for Panasonic P2 cards. Some of my colleagues got burned on the very first Macbook Pro because it only had FW400 and there were few ExpressCard adapters available; Apple must have gotten some grief over that model because the next version had FW800 again. Now if these specs on the new model are true, it sounds like we're jumping right back into the same mess.

The last time I checked, there are plenty of hard drives still being sold with FW400 ports, and plenty of DV cameras with the same -- so I hardly consider that connection to be "legacy" yet. Yes, I know there are adapters out there for these devices. I know that both ports are still on the same bus, which limits the bandwidth available. But if you've ever tried to edit video on a Mac Pro with both a camera/deck and storage hooked up at the same time then you know what I'm talking about: you NEED those extra ports. What's the point of shaving off a few ounces of weight by eliminating a port or two if I need to pack an extra .5 lbs. of adapters in my bag anyway? I'm paying for a PRO machine, I'd like all the features I need for Pro work, weight be damned.

D:mad:

well i understand u that u wanna stand out with ur mbp.
but so what? whats the prob? are u afraid people think u are poor and cant afford a mbp?
kids get other probs to deal with... i mean 80% of mankind doesnt see the difference between the old iphone and the ipod touch, but who cares?

and about the alu using and being green... alu needs a lot more power to be produced so its not as green as apple say it is. As long as they cant reduce the production energy for alu its not better or even worse than using plastic for the environment.

It's a terrible idea. Everyone on here is so hung up on Apple ditching the optical drives and ports on the new notebooks - that isn't going to happen. They might reduce them, as the article states, but for serious use, a MBP without an optical drive and ports is entirely useless to me, and I'd rather not carry around a 'brick'. I want everything in one nice, shiny case.

Not me, give me ports and an optical drive any day over a bit of weight loss and thinness.
I would hate al those separate components cluttering my desk
