Woo hoo! I see the logic in only having FW800, but just I hope this isn't another teenie step in a phase-out of FireWire.

But now we only have 1 FW port. Unless there's 2 FW800 ports.

I wouldn't be surprised if the MB lost FW completely.

only time i use an optical drive is to install software or burn DVD's...

Yeah, how useless! Who installs software or burns DVDs these days?

While we're at it, let's get rid of the keyboard: far too finger-centric. I never use it 90% of the time.

It's all about the foot now.

Disappointing if there isn't more to it. If aluminum casing makes the masses celebrate then anything will.

Some of us are getting very tired of the cracking bottoms and palm rests on the Macbooks. I'm really looking forward to a nice sturdy laptop. I know I'm not the only one. I worked a university help desk and I saw dozens of cracked Macbooks. It got really old.

At this point, sadly, I'm not going to believe anything until I see it in the Apple store.

But I do have a question: I'm going to be traveling from New York back to Boston on the 14th, but I don't leave New York until 1:30 PM. If the 14th happens to be The Day, should I bother trying to go to one of the retail locations in the morning to pick one up, or do people tend to queue up and hog them all within a few hours of the stores' openings on the release date? All of my previous computer purchases have been online, so I'm really not sure what to expect at the stores; I don't want to waste my time if it probably won't end up panning out, you know? I'd rather wait a few extra days for it to be shipped to me than make the day of my departure even more harried than it already will be, with no payoff.

Does anyone know if the higher education discount is the same on all products? (in the UK).
And what are the exact % reductions online and instore? I looked through some threads and found a lot of discrepancies.

I cant wait for the new macbook, as long as the high end one is equal to or better than current blackbook.. i have waited so long for my first mac!:D

I have owned 2 and not a single crack. I have 4 friends with them. No cracks. Yes some people have had problems. No doubt. But aluminum has their own set of problems as well.

im still really hoping the aluminum macbooks come in the same colors the ipods did.

I WOULD KILL FOR A YELLOW MACBOOK. how sick would that be!!!!

anyone else want a colored macbook??!?!

SHUT everyone UP about the Blu-ray. You don't need HDMI for Blu-ray, and we won't get Blu-ray anyway.

you may not care, but believe it or not there are a lot of people who actually want it and not rely solely on the itunes store for hd media distribution. especially when you can't even currently buy or rent (only w/ apple tv) hd from itunes.

I agree..... if you want to reduce the footprint why the fat miniDVI? Why not HDMI and better still DisplayPort (ever so slightly lengthier than HDMI).
Why not HDMI? Because you can't just drop in a dongle to go from HDMI to VGA; it requires D->A conversion. With MiniDVI, that's handled by the Mac, but that's simply not possible with HDMI as far as I know.

I haven't ever used DisplayPort, but the Wikipedia article says it suffers from the same problem as HDMI with older displays or VGA-only tellies.

There is absolutely nothing stopping them from making it cheaper. There is absolutely no proof that it will be.

Except there was a warning at the last quarterly shareholders meeting about less profit margin from a future product update.

It is speculated that this means Apple is going to target the macbook for under $1000.00 to be competitive with other notebook manufacturers.

hmmm

I don't think the new MacBook Pro could use Mini-DVI, since it doesn't support Dual Link. Maybe it's only on the new MacBook? Can't wait to see 'em.

The DVI has 28+1 pins , right -
and the mini DVI has 32 pins . SO i can't see a problem to bring up the "dual link" to the mini DVI interface, right ?!
But wait- there's the catch - there is no mini DVI to DVI - "I" , there is just miniDVI to DVI- "D" which means , - if you need VGA - go buy miniDVI to vga,
same with HDMI , AAAND if it really turns out to be true [,which i probably would celebrate,(long story)] the old miniDVI to DVI adapter that we bought wouldn't support the dual link - if brought up , of course .??
What do you think ?

boot off external hd with fw800?

can someone confirm whether or not you can boot off an external drive using FW800?

the thing about the MBA is it has no FW ports at all, so you can't boot off an external drive.

why would you want to do this, you may ask? for troubleshooting purposes. if your laptop's hd crashes, you can boot if off an external drive via FW.

AFAIK, you can't do it via USB.

IDK if FW800 works.

I have thought for a while this would be a really good idea. I know that there are problems associated with having multiple colors with inventory control etc. but you know that girls would eat up a pink one just like they do the pink nanos...

SHUT everyone UP about the Blu-ray. You don't need HDMI for Blu-ray, and we won't get Blu-ray anyway.
Well, it is technically possible now to put a Blu-ray drive in a very thin enclosure. Have you seen the Sony Vaio TT? It's 0.93" thick, and it has a Blu-ray drive.

I'm not saying we're getting Blu-ray in the upcoming Macbooks, I'm just saying it's technically possible.

Can it have the accelerometer like the ipod nano. I just wanna shake my macbook and have it randomly play songs, or movies, or open random programs. that would be fun. a 1000+ dollar shaker

The MBs use conventional hard drives; not flash or SSD. shaking conventional hard drives will freeze them...so u wont be able to play songs from the hard drive...I guess u were kidding...I am just being the straight faced sidekick.

What if macbooks and macbook pro's shed most ports and the optical drive (allowing for cheaper prices), and apple comes out with a new "brick" that contains the ports and optical drive, which would work wireless with all laptops. Just an idea

It's a terrible idea. Everyone on here is so hung up on Apple ditching the optical drives and ports on the new notebooks - that isn't going to happen. They might reduce them, as the article states, but for serious use, a MBP without an optical drive and ports is entirely useless to me, and I'd rather not carry around a 'brick'. I want everything in one nice, shiny case.

Yeah, how useless! Who installs software or burns DVDs these days?
Every software installation I do is downloaded from the net. And I don't burn DVDs or CDs ever, nor do I imagine most people do. So why do most people need to carry a burner around every time they want take their computer somewhere? Just in case they need to burn a DVD at the coffee shop? Do you carry blank DVDs with you everywhere you go?

Do you need a DVD burner in your iPhone? Why does it need to be an integral part of your computer instead of something that you can plug in when (or if) you ever need it.
