im still really hoping the aluminum macbooks come in the same colors the ipods did.

I WOULD KILL FOR A YELLOW MACBOOK. how sick would that be!!!!

anyone else want a colored macbook??!?!

oh me me me i want a green one :)

with no hdmi, does this mean blu-ray is off the table?

Current Macbook Pros have both DVI and S-Video right? I am hoping they replace S-Video out with HDMI, only makes sense for the next... oh, say 50 years...

Blu-ray is the deciding factor for me. It has to be an option at least.

Also they are using the terms 13, 15, & 17 inch screens when most other manufacturers are going to 16x9 screens. I hope Apple is going to 16x9. Regardless of the blu-ray debate, all HD content is in that aspect ratio.

Freakin' brilliant

What if macbooks and macbook pro's shed most ports and the optical drive (allowing for cheaper prices), and apple comes out with a new "brick" that contains the ports and optical drive, which would work wireless with all laptops. Just an idea

That's what I was hoping for. I have a MB that also serves as a desktop with ext. display and a whole bunch of other stuff tethered to it. Connecting 5 or 6 cables all the time is annoying and messy. I would buy a brick if it could wirelessly do it all! Stick the brick in the old Mac Mini casing.....not that they ever would.

It would be cool, but frankly I'm too flaky to buy a colored computer. I change colors every time I buy a new iPod because I'm tired of looking at the old one, but an iPod costs about 10% of what a computer does--it's therefore not difficult to summon the wherewithal to switch those up fairly frequently. For most people (myself included), it's harder to do that with an item that costs $1000+. All of this considered, I'd probably be conservative with the color of my computer, like the old fart I am, and just get silver or black even if something "more fun" were available. I'd stick with something neutral so I don't hate it in 3 months, you know?

Yeah, how useless! Who installs software or burns DVDs these days?

While we're at it, let's get rid of the keyboard: far too finger-centric. I never use it 90% of the time.

It's all about the foot now.

I hope that's sarcasm.... I would absolutely go for a laptop wit a couple usb ports, 1 (or 2) firewire, and an HDMI. Then a DVD drive that you can hook up when needed. If they kept that bundle around the same price as they are now...SOLD!!!

Reasoning:
Rarely do I use the DVD drive on my iMac besdies to rip my DVDs.
Most software I get is downloaded with an activation key.
If having the 'DVD brick' as the way to cut weight/cost, that would be slick.

Woo hoo! I see the logic in only having FW800, but just I hope this isn't another teenie step in a phase-out of FireWire.

I think most of us can agree that the chances of Apple phasing out FireWire are remote at best... FireWire still beats USB hands down on actual throughput...and let's not forget that FireWire can be used to boot a Mac. This isn't an interface Apple will be getting rid of anytime soon. Especially with the new specifications coming out soon. ;) After all, something has to show up USB 3.0...

Except there was a warning at the last quarterly shareholders meeting about less profit margin from a future product update.

It is speculated that this means Apple is going to target the macbook for under $1000.00 to be competitive with other notebook manufacturers.

While the whole profit margin statement is true, the quarter ends next Tuesday. Apple would have to start selling them RIGHT NOW and dirt cheap to affect margins significantly before then.

If they all look the same and have the same ports I wonder how they'll differentiate them.. will it just be by the graphics card (and obv size)?

Well cosmetically I think they'll have a few differences. The keyboard may be a different color, or the MB may come in colors like the nano.

I really don't care if they slim down the MB, but if they cripple the MBP to make it EVEN THINNER, I'll be upset.

im sorry but you make no sense.

if you read any of the previous posts, you would realize that this would add an external optical drive... much like the current Air.

so, you would still have the optical drive, its just it would be an accessory, ie. not part of the actual notebook.

And don't forget Apple invented FireWire.

Maybe they'll be no built in superdrive, but an external one will come in the box? I like the sound of that idea.

I don't like the idea of having another dongle to have to worry about keeping track of, and always worrying about if I'll need it or not.

oh me me me i want a green one :)

Orange all the way ;)

But loosing the Dual-link DVI on the MBP is bad. At least for many people/pro's. I use a 30" screen with my 17" MBP and use all the ports on it + express card with 2 FireWire 800 ports on it. I know I know, Mac Pro... But I like portability and it handles everything I throw at it anyways.

But aluminum MB's = hotness

The new 13" MacBooks, 15" MacBook Pros and 17" MacBook Pros are said to share similar Aluminum-based look "as if they were members of the same product family". The current MacBooks and MacBook Pro are very distinct from one another with the MacBook housed in a white or black plastic enclosure.
A MacBook with a MacBook Air look would be pretty sweet.

In an effort to further reduce the notebook footprint, the new laptops are said to be eliminating the Firewire 400 port and the 28-pin DVI-I (Dual Link) port. Instead, the cases will contain the smaller (but still backward compatible) Firewire 800 port and "what appears to be" a mini-DVI port.
FW800 would be extra sweet on a MacBook. I have been wondering why Apple just doesn't move to HDMI output. You can get an adapter to convert it to HDMI. Why not? Especially if one needs a mini-DVI to DVI adapter anyway. Only problems I could think of is that there are very few ( and a little spendy ) HDMI to VGA cables / adapters and does HDMI support dual-link DVI resolutions?

book, cover, judging, etc.

Seems like this makes the line more one dimensional, which is the opposite of more choices at different price points.

whether all in black plastic like they used to be, or all in alu, we'll pay more attention to other features soon enough.

to alu users, will the new alu mbp casing be durable?

oh me me me i want a green one :)

charcoal would do it for me, with the apple in cobalt blue...daaaamn yeah Apple should have a "customize your MB/MBP case" option..I am willing to pay to pimp my MBP up...

Limited to Apple accepted style standards that is....no use having even more tackiness around

haha charcoal is my 2nd favorite, then get a lime green apple :)

If you read the thread over at Appleinsider, you'll see that the FireWire 800 port will be backwards compatible with FW 400.

This is great news, would like to hear more about the new macbooks too though
It will work as a FireWire 400 port as well, but i'm pretty sure an adapter or new cable would be needed.
