no blacklit logo? I'm glad I bought the penryn then. I'm serious too. This is what partly makes up what an Apple laptop is. It's one of the most distinguishing feature.

It has holes for the backlight. Look closely.

Well there maybe some trouble with the very high-density small displays but what you are stating just doesn't jive with what is being reported in numerous articles that I have read online.
Such as? Your article refers to desktop monitors, not laptop panels. It jives fine--there's no source online that talks about 8-bit notebook panels, because there aren't any.
Here's the link for the full article. Of course this may be in error as well but it does imply that 8 bit is a choice by the manufacturer not a manufacturing limitation.
For desktop panels, it's a choice based on target MSRP, absolutely. There are 6, 8, and 10 bit TFTs on the market for desktop applications. Notebook panels are fundamentally different, in terms of power consumption, hardware design, thickness, pixel size, pixel pitch, and of course color depth.
As far as the 8 bit vs. 6 bit reporting by manufacturers, the article is probably talking about OEM's and monitor manufacturers, not the original panel manufacturer.
Yes, except that the panel manufacturer is the display OEM. It is their specifications that can be trusted, not monitor vendors or computer manufacturers.
Most people don't know what panel goes into which monitor or laptop.
Exactly, which is why they come off looking foolish when claiming that their notebook has an 8-bit panel when it, in fact, does not. If one can't name his panel ID, he don't know enough to make a claim about its color depth. This has not stopped multiple people from trying, though, and often getting angry as a result.

Once again, here's a list of manufacturers sourced for notebook LCDs. None offer an 8-bit notebook panel.

Samsung
LG-Philips
Chimei
AUO
Toshiba-Matsushita

So albeit a little off topic, what in the heck should I do?! Wait it off a couple more weeks?

If you started classes in the beginning of the year, it might put you in a better position since Macworld starts a few months after that (that is, if colleges start in March like Universities here in Australia), and product refreshes most definitely happen then. I initially waited for the new iMac revisions, which happened at the end of April. I have been waiting more than 2 years for that, since they are cheaper than the MBPs.

When the Penryn MBPs came out at the end of February, I immediately ordered the day it was listed on the Apple Store. I figured mobility should make up for the added cost vs. the iMac. I study Multimedia, which requires the use of powerful Macs. Had to commute for a whole year to use the G5 PowerMacs in class. Since getting the MBP, it trumps those old towers and I travel less to the labs as a result.

If you really don't want to get burned, I suggest waiting until the update does actually happen. In my opinion, I'd rather 'suffer' a few months without a decent computer than spend $3000 on something that will be outdated the next week. I got burned before when I first got my 867 MHz 12" Powerbook (got refreshed a few weeks after). The wait really paid off for me, and believe me, I have faced the same dilemma.

(Another side note: Many experienced people have advised me against getting revision 1 of any redesigned model. Best to wait for user feedback for a few weeks before taking the plunge, while they iron out the bugs. Contradicts what I suggest, I know :p)

OK, I stand corrected.

I can't seem to find any 8 bit laptop displays so I guess that proves your point. Most of the things that I have read must be specifically referring to desktop displays which also have different requirements than laptop displays.

Thanks for the information as I am sure it will come up again.

Oh, you could set a watch to it on these forums. :)

As a bit of trivia for really boring cocktail parties, IBM offered an IPS notebook panel option very briefly a few years back (hence my "extremely rare exception" qualifier above). Unfortunately, the supplier couldn't deliver in quantity, and the few panels it did deliver had massive quality control problems, bankrupting the supplier in the process. IBM suffered a great deal of ill will as a result of the blunder and quietly retired the model, with an undisclosed number of orders unfulfilled.

so people i really want to get a new mbp, i dont really need it now and i want the newest model i can get, when will we see a new cpu in them? im not talking about the redesign now..

That's the $2500, question. You tell me and we will both know.

Intel is suppose to be releasing the Montevina platform July 14th. This will provide a number of enhancements over the current intel santa rosa platform. Most notably a faster FSB, faster memory controller, faster integrated GPU, much smaller size, and better power management system.

Most likely many PC vendors such as Dell, Lenova, and HP will release new laptops shortly thereafter. Whether Apple will follow the PCs is anyones guess.

Some people are expecting a complete redesign because the new platform will allow more room in the MBP chassis. Also because the MBP hasn't seen a significant redesign since the 2000 TI model PB.

Many are expecting the next version to include some of the features found on either the standard MB or the highend MBA.

damn, well Apple Store Us is down for updates :D i hope for some new things

You know what'd be awesome, and something nobody else had done before?

Make the apple logo a little screen that you can display different things on.

want just plain white? Go to town. Want the old school apple logo? Be my guest! Want it to pulse while its sleeping? Sure you do! How about pulsing colors like in the background of the new iTunes commercial (with coldplay)? Sure!

that would be epic!

no responses?! I mean, I know its a little far fetched, but it could happen, apple is all about innovation, right?

Seems pretty similar to what Alienware did with their new laptops.. It's not a screen, but their logo can change colors and pulse and such.

Apple store down, I can see all of your thru your iSights! The anticipation mounts... ;) :D

official ish thread in buying tips, lets try to keep this on topic. (I know i kind of diverted it, but I wasnt aware of that thread)

nobody likes my idea?! i think it'd be fantastic! Like having a wallpaper... but on the outside! and it can move! :D

Couldn't they just update the casing now with montevina, and wait for Nehalem to add a BD-R?

While its possible its doubtful that they'll do it without some sort of event. It could come at MacWorld but thats not on schedule with intel  hm. Maybe it'll get its own event, why not?

NO DOUBLE POSTING. My mistake sir.

Personally, I didn't choose not to respond because it was "far fetched". I didn't response to your idea, because it would be a useless "feature", it would use extra battery and would mean extra thickness in the lid, and would mean you'd have one screen you couldn't protect by closing the lid.
Oh, and did I mention that such a feature would be utter useless for the person buying and using the computer, and that adding such "features" that add to the complexity doesn't spell i-n-n-o-v-a-t-i-o-n in my book?

If you wan't a coloured apple, stick som see-through plastic on top of the white apple.

Most research shows that new model rumours stay rumours for years until announcement day. Meanwhile, following your advice, the user goes months without a new computer.

I can say that since I bought a Penryn MBP just after announcement day...

So you're saying that this is just rumors??Because i want to buy a MBP but now i'm a little bit confused whether is should wait or go and order one....

Actually Apple has gotten away from events for announcements of Mac updates. Most announcements these days have been reserved for completely new devices.

The macbook was completely re-designed and renamed from ibook to macbook without an event.

I think since the intel switch Apple is trying to keep up-to-date with the new hardware like all of the pc vendors and events are too expensive and un-necessary for common computer updates.

thats true, although the case was similar. And the off topic was the apple store being down, but then again it could be on topic, but the odds of this coming out in the next few hours are literally astronomical.

I hope somebody gets to quote this tomorrow because i was wrong. oh how i hope.

Now, this is off-topic:
I know what you mean, that it's "1:HUGE NUMBER", but wouldn't one usually go the odds are "microscopic" in english?

Also, why do people use the word "literally" so much? In this case, it would mean that the odds were, say, made from stars or something like that :p
