You obviously haven't tried installing a new hard drive on the MBP.

You don't need a better example of how not perfect the MBP design is.

You're right - as much as I need a bigger HD, the fact that it's so hard to replace made me resort to an external.

I'm talking about the things that define the daily experience with the machine - looking at the screen, typing, opening/closing it, etc., not something that you might do a few times at most in the computer's lifetime.

Again I call fake. But if this is true and I hope not because a non lit Apple logo really is a no no. What's up with the rectangular hole.

I mean the current MBP is a big, rounded, aluminum, clamshell, silver casing.

Now this, this is a rounded, big, aluminum, silver, clamshell casing. Wow what a concept piece.

I see what you did there. ;)

That's why I'm thinking it might be the new MacBook case, if anything at all. :D Besides, not much to change with the MBP besides latch and keyboard and whatever else you guys decided to complain about. It already matches the rest of the Mac line, and it already looks amazing. Why would the designers waste their time doing random things like taking out the backlight logo or making it black? I think its time for the MacBook to see some aluminum.

For manufacturing purposes

I would think that the holes behind the logo are for manufacturing purposes. When moving down the line and getting stamped/cut, there needs to be some way to center and support the items, hence the three holes. Then the rest of the logo could be stamped or cut (removed) later down the line. Just a guess, I imagine the guys at :apple: love seeing the lit up logo as much as we do. I agree, there isn't a whole lot they could change with the MBP (form-wise), just some minor updates to keep the people happy. It very well could be the next MB, but with the iPhone going to plastic (presumably for cost reasons), I can't see them moving the MB to aluminum. I was so disappointed to see the iPhone go to plastic, my MB plastic looks like crap after less than a year! Works great though!

Question: whenever apple updates the MBPs, do the current MBPs see a reduced price? I ask because after the february update, I remember my best buy having the mid-range MBPs around $500 off.

I ask because I love the current keyboard.

Apple produces products in finished form. Just because your (and my preference) requires a very specific HDD doesn't mean they have a design flaw.

Yes it does. When a product is designed that requires extensive dismantling to access major replaceable parts then it's flawed. That's why every Apple product design has been continuously refined to make access to major parts easier. It's not just for consumer benefit, it's for technicians as well.

For a "Pro" unit it's a major flaw and just dates the design even more than it is. More so when the Macbook has a slide in drive hatch that enables easy access and that's aimed at consumers who shouldn't even care about replacing the hard drive.

Normally if there is any remaining stock at Apple it goes up on the refurb site and is sold that way. As far as Authorized third party sales, it just depends on the store.

I too think that the three holes in the logo are just an interim manufacturing measure to do something like hold the metal as it goes down the assembly line or something.

macbook case

I think the holes in the this case of the apple logo is probably for the mounting of a new Apple logo, made of LED technology, so that the backlight of the actual screen does not need to light the logo up either. Probably in conjunction with OLED screens perhaps?
I find it hard to believe that Apple would step away from the backlit logo, it's been a trademark ever since it's introduction on the later G3 Powerbooks, and it would be a shame to loose that. The holes could also be simply part of the case moulding process, to be cut out/larger in the next stage of the mfg process... who knows, I'd like to see a re-design, all the more reason to go for a new MBP, and say farewell to my trusty Alu G4 PB 1.25Ghz.... :apple:

I don't own a MBP (couldn't afford it, got a BlackBook instead), but I don't think they need much of a cosmetic upgrade.

Pretty much the only thing they need to update is the bottom half - i.e. the keyboard, and the grills on the edges. Give it a magnetic latch like the Macbook (doesn't it have a latch ATM?), and you're done. That's the great thing about the MBP design - it's iconic, and it hardly needs any changing to make it, well, perfect.

Boo to the removal of the backlit apple. It's very cool, and well engineered - it uses the screen backlight, so design doesn't take away from battery life (function). It's a perfect example of why I love Apple's engineering. You know someone like Dell or Sony would have just stuck an LED in there.

That was my first thought, too - OLED displays (which wouldn't be able to backlight the logo in a solid white color).

Read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oled#Advantages

A summary of the advantages: better color, more brightness, colors don't shift with the viewing angle, better battery life, less heat, and faster response time. Sounds pretty PRO to me.

Not all revolutions in design mean you change the shape of the thing.

What I don't understand is how people can seriously expect there to be a major design update without any keynote by Steve. As much as I'm hoping for it (and holding of buying a new MBP until the day), I doubt it's going to happen this year.

It looks to me likeif it is the top of a macbook air with some makeshift metal attached to make it look like a mbp!

If it aint broke dont fix it... except that philosophy breeds stagnancy.

Each revision of the macbook line IMO should tell a new story.

That's true, and if there is a revision I am expecting it to be amazing, but that case, if its real, doesn't look too much different from the current MBP. (Why hasn't hardly anyone else considered it being a new MacBook case?)

Honestly, I don't see what else they can change except what people complain about already (the latch, etc.). Those few things aren't enough to cause a completely new line, and without a completley new line, why waste their time with the really tedious stuff (the logo, or rearranging things like the battery, unless both were really power-saving qualities) when they could be working on making the new line, eventually.

Not to sound like an old fart or anythin, but I think the current MBP is perfect as-is...

Lets see... possible changes...

More curved like the Air = lame, looks like a toy
No backlit logo? = hahahaaha yeah right
Black frame around the display iMac style? = yeah right, let PC laptops be made out of half a dozen different colors/shades
MacBook-style keyboard? =HELL NO, the current square keys are perfect, the dented in keyboard looks like a toy
Black keys? = HELL NO AGAIN --- plus the backlight for the keys looks cheap as hell on black...

Only thing I could think of to change really is to make the latch magnetic --- not that the current one is bad, but the magnetic one is cooler... Of course as long as the pretty pulsating button stays :)

couldn't have said it better myself

13in??

I really hope they have a MBP 13in. I really like the size of the 13in, and I loved my old PB 12in. For me, smaller is better. I would have bought the MBA if it would have had a larger harddrive, expandable ram, and a faster processor. So hopefully this time around I'll get a 13in MBP, or a aluminum 13in MB. I don't need a pro, I just like the aluminum casing.

No way OLED is ready for mass-market yet and definately not affordable enough for notebooks. Two years away at least.

But what about the Macbook?
I really, really hope they DON'T do an aluminum Macbook. Black and white is like Apple's trademark.
