Maybe those holes where the apple logo should be are for letting the light through & attaching the plastic apple logo portion.

no backlit logo

Maybe there is a functional reason for not having the backlit logo (not saying I believe it won't be there but if it isn't). I remember reading on one of these mac forums that in bright sunlight the light shining through the apple on the back can actually damage the screen. I have no sources to back this up I'm just suggesting that maybe apple identified some functional problem with the backlit logo that would cause them to change it in a redesign???

Just a guess,

PS I also think the black outlined logo would be sweet :D

I cannot identify a radical redesign here. It would be one thing if we had a side profile :?

Only thing I could think of to change really is to make the latch magnetic --- not that the current one is bad, but the magnetic one is cooler...

Amen to the magnetic latch...I replaced my HD in my Macbook Pro a couple weeks ago, and since then the latch has become a major issue - it gets "stuck" and I have to sit the 'book on its end (and pull *hard*) to open the thing.

As someone in the market for a new MBP, I'm hoping this is the MacBook, as if it was it'd mean Apple'd have to more radically redesign the MBP for it to look sufficiently different.

Maybe the smaller computer is the new 13.3 inch Pro and the bigger one is the 15 inch!!!

Me too.

It just looks more like a MacBook shape to me. Pros seem more rectangular, while this one seems more square-ish.

Everyone is looking for the MacBook to go aluminum anyways..

If its real, it seems like the MacBook would be more plausible.

??? pro and MacBook are both rectangular. it's just that Pro's are bigger, but you can't really tell from this picture.

and i don't expect Apple to radically redesign any laptops in the near future. even after 5 years of using the current PowerBook/MBP design, it's still a fresh look. all it needs is slight updates like latchless design, keyboard and larger trackpad and perhaps a few tweaks here and there.

I'm thinking that the little holes are where LEDs would go and then the logo would be placed over top of it. I could be wrong though. There's got to be a reason why others aren't suggesting this.

Im not saying MacBooks are square-shaped. But they appear to be more like a square than the pros.

While there isn't a scale, the case just seems smaller, and not as wide as the pros. Because the MacBook is small it seems to look more like a square (obviously it isn't), rather than the larger MacBook Pros.

Compare top views of both of them, especially the 17-inch Pros.

Well, iMac was redesigned recently, and all of the Apple computer models, except the Mini and the MacBook, I think, are aluminum. There is a chance, if not a good chance, Apple would update MacBooks too.

Although it would be a shame to lose the nice wifi reception plastic supposedly gets over aluminum.

Other than the non-backlit logo, what exactly is the difference between this prototype and the current MBPs? Both are aluminum, and you cannot really discern the shape from those pictures.

id like to see a bottom case resembling a macpro side panel; easier to install/replace battery, memory and harddrive/optical drive.

keep the battery safe from scratching and bumping on surfaces.

and im assuming if this does come forth soon, there will be some sort of processor bump?

BOOOO! If I'm understanding the picture right, this thing would STILL have a sealed hard drive.

crap, and when my mbp is just a little over 1 moth old :(

Didn't you do any research before you ordered you MBP? I mean it has been pretty much common knowledge for the last few months that a refresh was going to happen towards the end of summer 2008.

Most research shows that new model rumours stay rumours for years until announcement day. Meanwhile, following your advice, the user goes months without a new computer.

I can say that since I bought a Penryn MBP just after announcement day...

Here's a tip. Take the battery out and loosen the two screws at the front edge just a bit. If you over-tighten those, the latch doesn't work properly
