No issues yet this evening…it’s after midnight and I’m in the same dark environment. Still terrified to jinx it, but so far it’s looking good.

Sounds great. Guess I need to install the beta!

Well, I ended up with two shutoffs… the first was around 2:45am, and the second was at 3:33am.

Obviously I’ll be keeping a close eye on this over the next few days. Super disappointing that it’s still shutting off, since it worked so well on 16.0 & 16.1

That's a shame. Have you tried adding it to a focus like I posted yesterday?

I had mine on 16.4 beta 1 last night, and on a focus mode (do not disturb). I set the aod to be on in that focus.
It still shut off a few times. It’s still buggy and I think related to it trying to “learn” your habits. If you’re usually not using phone at 12.30am then it probably will start turning off

Damn! I am usually in bed at that time, but on a Friday/Saturday I am usually in bed but using my phone for podcasts and Spotify. I wish the phone wouldn't turn off when you have an app and lock screen widget actively running!

Yeah I wish Apple didn’t try to get the AOD to learn your habits. Just keep it always on and then maybe provide users with a few different options:

• Turn off after an hour of inactivity
• Turn off at a scheduled time

Alright, it’s Night 2 on this beta, and I’ll say this…

It may not be perfect, but I’m getting WAY fewer shutoffs than I was with 16.2 and 16.3 — in fact, I’ve had zero shutoffs tonight. Granted, it’s still “early” for me (2:45am), and this is around the time that things began going south last night, but this is still better than it was.

I do think Apple needs to stop trying to predict user habits, and I’d also like to see the brightness tweaked a bit (the AOD gets too dim in dark rooms at night), but at least it’s not as horrible as it’s been.

Almost 4am and no shutoffs… can’t say I’m super mad about this beta. Still don’t totally trust it, but this isn’t too bad.

EDIT: just before 4am and we have the first shutoff of the night. Don’t need Apple trying to tell me that it’s past my bedtime. Hopefully it learns that I stay up late.

From what I posted a couple of days ago about it being able to be attached to a focus, I thought in the beta we could set it to not go off when a focus was on?

Yeah… the problem is that, no matter what, the AOD is gonna turn itself off on its own when it thinks it knows what you want.

It’s not perfect but it is better on 16.4. Seems to shut off when it thinks it’s too late and you should be going to bed

I will agree that it’s better on 16.4. I’d still prefer that Apple didn’t try to second guess my habits.

Totally agree. I mean I highly doubt anyone is thinking “ I wish my phone would decide when to turn the screen off for me”, it’s just unnecessary

My screen had turned off about 20 mins prior to an Apple Music notification coming through and then the screen decided to wake up. I had my phone in DND so I was never notified, however the screen went back into AOD brightness. Found it interesting how an Apple notification made the screen wake up and then stay on its AOD mode, even though it had already shut off completely like we’ve all mentioned at night.

Completely dark room, iOS 16.4 beta.

Edit: also on a MagSafe charger at the time.

Any improvement in 16.4 beta 2?
I had zero shutoffs last night…

…although it makes me really nervous that they added this text to the AOD settings, almost as if they’re trying to manage expectations for a display that will keep shutting itself off:

Isn’t the ALWAYS-ON display supposed to be ON when the phone isn’t in use?

"When not in use" is basically all the time??

It sounds just as I suspected from the beginning. This "feature" is just a heavy handed way to prevent battery drain (and perhaps burn-in) on their first iteration of AOD.

Well, it’s not their first, the Apple Watch has a real AOD for years now
*First iteration for a phone. I imagine that's part of the reason they designed it as it is. They took the watch design and applied it to a bigger screen and compromises had to be made. Hopefully it will follow in the footsteps of the watch and improve later on.

I am on 16.4 beta 2 and the display just shut off. There's no difference from what I can tell. As for the watch, the AoD on the watch worked perfectly from day 1. Maybe this is Apple's way of frustrating us into buying the 15 pro max, which will have a REAL AoD. :)

I wouldn't be surprised!
