Same setup last night, but listened to Spotify after midnight and the screen went blank straight away!

This thread made Brandon’s video!

Hopefully this brings a bit more attention to this annoying bug…

EDIT: the AOD stuff is at the 1:49 mark

The frequency/accuracy of the behavior might be calibrated wrong since 16.2 but the feature itself is deliberate. The iPhone tries to guess if you're around or not and if you're not within the vicinity of the device it completely shuts off the display. One of the trigger conditions is if you've walked away with your Apple Watch but left your phone behind. I think this is what could be bugging it out for you, do you have an Apple Watch connected at all? Maybe that's where the bug comes from.

Yes. When I am in bed listening to something, I have my iPhone next to me whilst wearing my watch and I have my airpods max on. I have the Spotify or Podcasts app open and the controls are displayed on the lock screen. I think that's enough for my iPhone to know that I'm actively using it!

I’m probably jinxing myself here…

…but have things been working normally for anyone else the last couple days? Not sure exactly what’s happening, but it’s been a few days since my AOD has shut off.

I’ve still been spending lots of time in dim/dark environments late at night, but for some reason the AOD has been working properly and *not* turning itself off.

Really, really hope this continues.

No mine seems worse if anything last few days, it was fine and then suddenly decided to shut off randomly, even in the morning now!!
Really annoys me this. Apple would say “the iPhone uses advanced neural AI to know when you want the display on …..” but that’s utter rubbish, how could it possibly know what I want. I’ve set the damn AOD on, that’s all it should care about …..
For me this is a great example of tech trying to be TOO smart when the tech just isn’t advanced enough yet. I don’t want the AI to think for me, it just can’t do it. It’s trying to make my life slightly easier but it’s doing the opposite

Totally agree with this. And no, my iPhone is still going blank when it shouldn't!

**UPDATE** I listened to a podcast last night and the screen stayed on all the time. Even past midnight. So I don't know what's going on!

I really think 16.3.1 is delayed because they’re trying to fix this. Let’s hope this is the case. Also if this does not get fixed in less than a month I will try to get a hardware repair and hope that i don’t get gaslit by apple. It seems that most iPhones don’t get this problem at all so I’m suspecting that this may be a hw defect 🤔🤔

I’m scared to even restart my phone because my AOD is working perfectly — it’s ALWAYS ON, no matter what. I’ve woken up multiple times in the middle of the night and it remains on — it’s perfect.

No clue exactly when the “fix” began… the only thing I’ve done this week was install the new tvOS and HomePod 16.3.1 updates (can’t imagine that has anything to do with the AOD). It’s as if the phone just somehow fixed itself. We’ll see how long this lasts, though.

I don't think it's anything to do with hardware as the problem didn't start until 16.2

Whelp, it was great while it lasted.

Today’s iOS 16.3.1 update has my AOD turning itself off again. Goddammit.

No improvement for me either with 16.3.1.

Hopefully there will be a new beta today.

I updated to 16.3.1. An interesting thing happened last night, the aod was on all evening, but turned off at the exact time I used to have a sleep schedule set up. Could the OS still have some remnants of that, in that it’s “learnt” that’s the sort of time I go to sleep?
Wonder what would happen if someone did a complete fresh install of 16.3.1, and setup as new phone, would the aod be always on until it started “learning” your habits?

Sadly 16.3.1 did not fix it for me either. Still randomly shuts off in the evening in a darkish environment.

Looking more and more like this is intended behaviour. Software trying to second guess when you want it off LOL

"Always On Display system setting can now be configured with Focus Filters."

That's what I read in an article on the iClarified app detailing what's in the new 16.4 beta. So looks promising.
