So I just talked to AC, he said the store should've offered me a high end 15" so he talked to them and got back to me to tell me I can get the high end i7 machine. I was pretty happy with that; the first time I talked to him I asked about paid upgrades or paying the difference to get the 17 but he said they couldn't do that although it will be a CTO since he said they'd order it with the 7200 rpm drive.

So in the end I'm getting exactly one of the two machines I thought should have been offered. It would be nice to pay for the hires screen or to jump to the 17 but I can't complain...I'll just need to look into Expresscard workarounds.

Huge thanks to Applecare and executive relations :)

congratulations, but i thought you needed an ec card slot? shouldn't you complain for a 17"?

EXCELLENT!

I guess I'll feed you.

I did ask about a 17 this morning when he said he wanted to talk to the store to find out why in the world they offered me a machine that was less than that of 'like for like'. He said he wasn't sure if he could do that, and I mentioned that I would happily pay the difference between whatever machine we could get sorted out as a base point replacement and the 17.

He called me later in the afternoon saying I could get the high end 15, which I was happy to hear, and then enquired again about possibly doing a paid upgrade on/from that as the new (and proper) replacement machine, but he said I couldn't do any type of paid upgrades (not sure why). So, I tried, but couldn't do it so there's really nothing to do but be happy with the fact that the machine they are giving me has all other features of my current one sans EC; in all other areas, it is equal or better. I'll have to look into EC workarounds, as I've never thought about alternatives and I'll have to see what I can come up with and go from there.

My original upgrade plan was to go from my C2D to a Sandy Bridge/USB 3.0 machine next winter when the AppleCare expired which would be a huge upgrade, but I've got a lot better machine than my C2D coming now so we will see how that pans out; may keep this one well into and beyond Sandy Bridge if it proves to be a good machine. But who knows, I may be compelled to jump into a Sandy Bridge machine a year from now if the offer is just that good, or if in time I can't find a proper workaround for lacking an EC slot. But for now, I'll take the machine, look for workarounds, and otherwise enjoy it and be glad I got a brand new high end computer for exactly $0.

Congratulations Puma. Sounds like you finally got a sweet deal.

I have a question about Applecare on such replacements. Since they're technically giving you a new machine, are you allowed to purchase a brand new Applecare? Or because this was a replacement on previous applecare, they won't warranty the machine for more than a few months?

AFAIK this machine will carry a full, new 12 month warranty. They are going to cut me a check for the prorated refund of my remaining AppleCare, and said I could buy another fresh AppleCare if I want.

Congratulations, I was confident that the Executive would make things right. I hope that you receive the replacement quickly and the bonehead at the store is the one that gives it to you.

oh feeding me, is that what nerds call it? well congrats anyways, i honestly knew the entire time they were going to give you a 15 i7 (i'm sure you did too, which is why you went through all the trouble).

and as far as apple care goes, they usually transfer your applecare over, but since yours is almost done they're probably willing to give you the prorated amt.

If it's any consolation, Apple replaced my 15 inch with a 17" i7 Hr, BUT they didn't refund my Applecare, which would have been about half the amount (I didn't bother asking, either).

So I got a call this morning from my contact telling me that the store (who is ordering the machine) was asking if I wanted the standard res, hi res glossy, or hi res AG display!

So I naturally said I'll take the hi-res glossy. Super happy now.:D

--15"
--2.66 GHz i7
--500 GB @ 7200 RPM
--4 GB RAM
--Hi res glossy

Still need to find a way around esata, but hi res certainly will help with photoshop. :)

Really looking forward to swapping out this machine for that one...everything is on hold right now, need to wipe my Time Capsule and start fresh too once the new one comes...can't wait to get it and get everything set up and get back on track.

And all is right with the world, congrats. I am curious, when I received a replacement at the Apple Store, the manager took my old receipt and simply refunded the amount of the old machine and applied it to the replacement. So, why couldn't you get a 17" if you wanted? You could always sell it and then buy the 17". Oh well, you've got a great machine coming.

To be honest I have no idea. It sounds like my replacement is coming from the store, who is going to special order it, and then I'm going to go in there and swap them out when it comes in.

I don't think they will do what they did for you, because if they did I'd walk away with more money than a 17" machine costs, given Apple's pricecuts in the subsequent revisions after I got mine (I think mine was nearly $2700+AppleCare)

I just hope it comes through without any quality control issues...

Still waiting on the new machine. The store ordered it last Friday, and said it would take 1-2 weeks, so if I don't hear by tomorrow early afternoon, I won't be able to get it for another week since I can't get to the store during the week.

wowo i cant believe you went through that much trouble. if i ever get one im getting it from bestbuy with the bestbuy warranty.

any problems and i get it replaced no questions asked.

Where is this Bestbuy? Usually they are useless.

...and still waiting. Today marks a FULL two weeks since it's been ordered.

How long can it really take to go from Shanghai, China, to Osaka, Japan?

When I ordered my CTO back in 2008 right when the unibodies came out (and when they were having supply problems since they were the new hot thing), it took 7-8 days total to get all the way to America--this time it has a lot shorter distance to cover and it's taken twice as long and complete silence from the store. I could see maybe if they had just been updated or something, but we are approaching the end of the product cycle so supply isn't an issue.

Just seems to be taking an abnormally long time.

On the train home now and I just noticed something in the specs on the box. It reads:

MBP 15.4/2.66/2x2GB/500/SD/GLSY/JPN

Is that JPN on the end signify it's for a Japanese keyboard?

It's supposed to have an English keyboard. I'll be pretty disappointed if it came through with a Japanese keybiard and i didn't notice in store.

Also it doesn't specify hi res, should it say that on the box?

Screen also seems to be only 75% as bright as the old panel, even though it's on max. No dead pixels or yellow tinge though, and backlighting is acceptable. Panel is 9CA4.

Also I didn't have to sign a single thing at the store, which seemed odd.
