I promised myself I would skip this year refreshment but like every year I just get too into it and want the newest iPhone. It's not like my iPhone XS Max has gone worse since the keynote of the iPhone 11 (Pro Max) but still.. just having this feeling of getting the newest version is something I'm anticipating every year, even though the improvements over the last years iPhone aren't as big as they supposed to be.

So am I 'sick' because I want the iPhone 11 Pro Max although owning the iPhone Xs Max?

Nah if you have the money and want one, go for it. I'll be doing the same thing and am telling myself I shouldn't get a series 5 as well (I picked up a series 4 last year with my xs max on launch day).

I knew since more than 11 months that I will get the XS Max successor no matter what. To me the XS Max had the lowest reception in weak signal (e.g. Edge) areas.
In addition I am on the IUP with a hassle free process, unlocked phone and fresh phone/battery. I am not sick about it. To me it's rational.

I have tried resisting for the past 4 releases not to upgrade every year. I failed every single time. :( I need help.
Opposite problem. I’m still stuck on the 7 Plus.

If my financial situation were better, I probably would’ve went for the XR last year or the 11 this year. Maybe I’ll get the 11 this year before the refresh. Who knows?

OP, it really depends on your financial situation. If you can comfortably afford it every time, I don’t think you’re “sick”, but I can’t help but be a bit envious of anyone who can put out for a $1500 phone every year.

If you're all sick, then add me to the rest of us infected people LOL
As an owner of an XS Max, I swore I wasn't going to upgrade this year. Even though I could really use the camera upgrades and the extra battery life, I was holding out to keep my phone for another year, sell it for around $500 or so (estimating next years resale value) and use that to either put towards next years phone or another want.
However, as a Sams Club member, they came out with a pre-order deal of getting a $200 gift card just for upgrading and I couldn't resist! Yes, its not the $500 or so I could get next year, but it 1) saves me the hassle of having to resell my XS on my own with all the scammers and dangers out there, 2) gives me $200 now that I'll likely put towards a new Apple Watch 5 since I still have an old Series 1 watch that is severely declining so I can get that soon at 1/2 price and I get all the features now of a new phone.
Unfortunately as AT&T changed their Next plans, I'll have to either wait until January 2021 for next years phone or just ensure that my 11 Pro Max is paid off at 50% when Apple releases next year's devices, but Im lucky in the fact that I have a very good job, a lot of disposable income and as I don't really have that many other hobbies that I shovel a ton of money into, I don't feel that bad about spending a few hundred here or there to get what I want and will make me happy.

Everyone has their own reasons and their own ideas of what makes them happy, but hell I figure life is too short, enjoy it while you're here. You certainly can't take it with you when you go!

I have purchased every single iPhone 2007-current except iPhone 7.

I currently have the xs max 256 that

This will be the second time I will skip an iPhone release in the last 12 years.

I got (2) iPhone 11 128gb for my wife and my 9 year old son though. I got $400 in gift cards from Sams club plus $700 credits for new line for my son (I canceled his iPad lte line). So my bill essentially is the same.

I think the iPhone 11 are the better value buy.

I just can’t justify spending another $1250 on a phone after using the xs max for 12 months. Apple is behind google with camera tech/software. I have pixel 3 xl and I think google camera software is better.

Maybe if there is a $300 gift card promo at Sams club/Costco in November I may bite on another phone.

I have a feeling there will be promo since it’s nothing new about these pro phones except the 3rd camera and better battery life.

The xs max did not have many sales last year cause it was “new” phone.

We will see. Just don’t want to pay full price for the phone right now.

I could do installments. But my personal belief is installment and upgrading is u are just leasing the phone and the lease heavily favors the carriers terms. Not ur terms.

The emptier we feel our lives are the more we will try to satisfy ourselves with material goods.

That's not to say people with crap stuff are happier. They can be even worse. Empty lives and can't afford material goods they want.

Very rare to find someone really grounded and satisfied and non-judgemental. You do get a lot of people who try to appear contented, but they're really quite conceited and judgemental, and possibly resentful too.

Anyway, if you can step back from the hype, and put that energy into taking up a new hobby instead, that would be better for you and make you happier. New phone.. shiny toy syndrome only lasts a few days and decreases exponentially. New hobby, like running, cycling or anything fitness related.. that just gets better and makes you happier as it goes on..

There are very few meaningful (noticeable, useful, worth paying for) features in the new phones compared to the XS Max. You're paying a pretty high tax to say you have the newest thing. In my opinion, wait for the upgrade to iOS 13 and see if that scratches your itch for 'new'. Or buy yourself a cool new case. Or keep your phone and buy yourself an accessory like AirPods. Or just buy the new phone if that's what you want to do. No one here is keeping score of your life's decisions.

I would say it depends on your scenario. If you're about to be past due on your mortgage, you have no food in your refrigerator, and your car has bald tires then I would say rethink your priorities. Now if all your bills are paid, you're doing well financially, and you have the extra $$$$ then absolutely not. Either way it's your money but spending extra money on something you enjoy isn't a big deal. Some spend thousands on their cars, others spend thousands on travel, while some spend it on electronics. Do what makes you happy!

Do what you like people. If you got the money congrats. Enjoy life. Live and learn. I upgrade every year. I travel too. I enjoy life. Upgrading a phone doesn’t dictate my yearly finances LoL. Been a member on here for many years. Every year I read these type of posts. Thank you Apple UP. Started using it last year. Used to do AT&T next. I like going on release day and getting my new iPhone at my local Apple store. It’s only 5 mins away too.

I'm far from wealthy but I manage my finances enough so I'll be okay with upgrading. I'm on some plan with my carrier where I can upgrade every year once half of the balance is paid. I'm extremely jealous of you living five minutes from the Apple Store!! I would be in there all the time if I was that close! It's about an hour drive for me :(

We're both sick. I, too, have an XS Max 256 Gold. I made the decision not to upgrade and I won't. My XS Max is capable and I'm not wasting money just to get the latest, but I'm loving that Midnight Green. I know, sick right.

I've mentioned in several threads I wasn't upgrading and I'm not. But I did mention how much I planned on purchasing an XS once the 11 is released for the price decrease. Apple, sadly, is not selling the left over inventory of the XS. I won't buy 3rd. party in fear I will be scammed. I'm saving myself the trouble so it leads me to possibly scoring an 11 Pro in Midnight Green (over the XS I wanted in Silver or Gold). I like this footprint; screen size of the X/XS/11 Pro. I love my XS Max because its comfortable to read on. So I may be joining you at the Doctor's office over at Apple as you upgrade your XS Max and as I score the 11 Pro, because of the size, camera. and did I say MIDNIGHT GREEN :p; while keeping the XS Max).

I believe this is just classic retail therapy. A lot of people take pleasure in simply buying new items. Especially expensive tech gear.

Nobody needs a new iPhone every year. Especially with the lack of significant changes we are now seeing every 12 months. The pushback is that people can do whatever they please with their money or credit cards, and while that is entirely true, a lot of people are just really attracted to buying into the new shiny iPhone yearly.

No, as a Max user you did not need the Pro Max. And I'm guessing you won't see many differences with the exception of battery life and potentially photos.

I actually just downgraded from the Max to the 8 Plus. I felt the Max simply wasn't worth the $41 I was paying for it monthly.

In Miami I actually have 5 stores. The falls. Dadeland mall. Miami Beach. Brickell. Aventura. Dadeland mall 5 mins away. The rest within 30-45 min drive.

To be fair most people don't NEED an iPhone period. They can do everything just fine with a $99 prepaid Android phone. People don't buy things because they NEED them but rather WANT them.

I also have XS max and ordered 11 pro max 512. In addition I upgrade from Watch S4 Steel to S5 Titanium.

I do not consider myself sick. May be others consider me sick, but I do not give a .... about them :) I live my and only my life and I let them live their lives.

Why not if you can afford it?

Guess what! You’re an adult! (I presume ;) ) the really exciting part about that is we get to buy whatever we like without having to justify to someone! Get that new phone and enjoy it! I am!

Cannot agree with you more. Really like your life vision, I have the same.

Using an iPhone versus a cheap Android phone (which is going to provide you with a superior smartphone experience) is completely different than upgrading your iPhone that is a year old and works perfectly.

Same here. Got the XS Max 256 gb last year told myself im good for the next 2 years.

Preordered the 11 Pro Max yesterday.I really like to take pictures with my phone and this device will make this experience i enjoy even better.

I’ve purchased (5) new phones in like 2-3 week period.

I had a old SE for 3 years I was happy with it.

It started to fail, so I bought a new 6S Plus, a new 7 128GB, then a iPhone 8 Plus 256GB and a iPhone 8 for my wife, after all that I was up in line for the pre-order to purchase a iPhone Pro Max 256gb. I think I’m done now.

Agreed but I was differentiating between a need and a want. Most people have a need to make phone calls, send texts, listen to music (maybe for emotional reasons), an alarm clock to wake up for school/ work etc. The $99 Android phone fills that need. Just like a basic car fills the need to drive around town. Now I want a nice car and an iPhone because I enjoy them. I have an XS Max that I don't need and I'll likely upgrade to an iPhone 11 something that I also don't need LOL.

As a shareholder I can assure you that you definitely aren't sick. I think it's quite natural to want the best you can have for yourself and obviously your family too. In fact if you pressed me to say so I would suggest you owe it to yourself to have the pinnacle of what technology offers year after year. You should also tell your friends to do the same.

You win the post of the day!... I might get the iPhone Pro Max just for this reason :)
