Agreed but I was differentiating between a need and a want. Most people have a need to make phone calls, send texts, listen to music (maybe for emotional reasons), an alarm clock to wake up for school/ work etc. The $99 Android phone fills that need. Just like a basic car fills the need to drive around town. Now I want a nice car and an iPhone because I enjoy them. I have an XS Max that I don't need and I'll likely upgrade to an iPhone 11 something that I also don't need LOL.

You're collecting them? That's a lot of phones

iPhone 6S Plus is sold. And my 8 Plus has been returned. I am using the iPhone 7 right now until the 11 Pro Max comes in the 20th.

I like to trade in while my existing phones have maximum trade in value. I get a new warranty cycle plus all the incremental upgrades that make the phone that much more enjoyable to use.

On occasion I get sentimentally attached and keep a phone to use in the house on WiFi or lend it out to family.

And I’m truly nuts because I upgrade on Android and iPhones. However it’s just the phones I do this with. Everything else I own often is secondhand to start with and then gets used until it’s dust. I very rarely upgrade PCs and iPads. I haven’t decided about Apple Watches yet, but so far there’s no pattern to when I upgrade those. I still wear my Series 2 often.

I am just very fond of these smartphones. I think they’re nice to look at and fun to own and I love to see what each new generation of camera upgrades brings each year.

I talk myself out of the upgrade every year.

But under IUP its the same price if I keep the old phone OR get the new one.

I only have to pay the Sales tax on the new phone.
SO for an extra $70 I get a new phone with:
Faster CPU and Graphics
Upgraded neural engine
Better Camera and videos
Brighter screen
Clean new housing
Faster larger charger
Better audio
Faster LTE & WiFi
Extra 4 hours of battery life which would have been reason enough to upgrade in years past

And a free year of Apple TV+ for the whole Family. That alone would have been $64 with tax.

Plus all the excitement of the preorder process
Same reasons for me. I had a year left to pay off my phone. And was planning to get the 5G, and trade my 10 Max in for that next year. But i figured that if i am going to do that. I may as well ge the new one. And trade that one in.

I'm sorry but your logic is flawed. It's human nature to opt for something better that enhances a need simply for the superior experience it provides. To say you have an XS Max that you don't need really rings false. You chose that phone for specific reasons. (I'm going to assume.) Now if you decide to get an iPhone 11 this year, that's your choice, but unless you want a smaller phone, you are going to upgrade for inconsequential reasons.

It brings me back to my original comment regarding OP. To go from a Max to a Max Pro simply for the sake of upgrading, and not necessary desiring anything specific about the Pro Max, is a waste of money IMO. But like I said prior, some people get pleasure from shiny new tech objects.

‘but it’s not the same price. It’s the same monthly outlay - but now you’re committing to at least one more year of payments. If you keep a phone for 2-3 years the overall cost per month would be lower.

You pay sales tax and 24 interest free payments
Same cost

the only thing that is less is if you amortize the tax over a 2 year period.
For me I can buy it in a tax free state.
You too then spend the money you saved on a good accounting course

My point was - nobody is forcing you to get a new phone every year. That’s what the iUP gets you into thinking - oh the monthly outlay is the same so it’s no extra cost to upgrade

If you replace the phone every 3-4 years instead you’d have 1-2 years with no monthly payments.

My point was phones are not assets they’re commodities.
They don’t appreciate in value so they are not investments.
You buy assets and lease commodities and if you can do it at zero percent interest
So much the better.

Its Almost like another service similar to a utility or cable tv.
Every month the leaches suck another chunk of money out of you.

I wouldn’t want to go without my phone.
Work couldn’t allow me to go without my phone
Principle business tool and personal crutch.

When it breaks Apple gives me another one, as good or better.
Lost or stolen insurance replaces it within hours.
I don’t baby it, I don’t defer to it, and don’t plot and scheme to replace it.
Worrying about trade values, or getting mugged through Craig’s list

I use all the features and functionality it affords me and when it’s upgrade comes
One seamlessly transfer of data and I return it.

They even send its coffin to my door for recycling

However and over the years I have acquired quite a collection of chargers, earbuds, and cords because Apple doesn’t want them back.

You want the latest get the latest.
If not you who ?
If not now when ?

I promised myself I would skip this year refreshment but like every year I just get too into it and want the newest iPhone. It's not like my iPhone XS Max has gone worse since the keynote of the iPhone 11 (Pro Max) but still.. just having this feeling of getting the newest version is something I'm anticipating every year, even though the improvements over the last years iPhone aren't as big as they supposed to be.

So am I 'sick' because I want the iPhone 11 Pro Max although owning the iPhone Xs Max?
Nope not at all... we all want it.

We’re all sick lol
Hey bud... yes we all are lol

No! Buy next years model and spend the money this year on a holiday / travel! Experiences are what you'll remember for the rest of your life! You don't need to line Apple's pockets! Get out there and enjoy life!

Sure...the experience of getting an iPhone 11 Pro Max on Delivery Day.

:D

There’s literally a program for getting a new one every time they release one... so if you’re sick then what am I for being in that program? I need new iPhones - it’s my addiction. I will pay Apple every month for life to get them.
I join the program last year for the first time, I knew I gonna to get new one this year, coming from xsMax.

I upgraded from an iPhone 7 Plus that was doing everything I needed perfectly. I upgraded to the Max because it's an awesome phone. It is easier to use than the 7 Plus but I wouldn't count that as a need. Unless the XS Max does something the phone it replaced can't do then I would call it as a want rather than a need. For example if all my fingerprints were burned off so I couldn't use TouchID then the FaceID of the Max could put it into the need category. I can't say I needed the XS Max and feel like I'm being honest at the same time. Did I want the XS Max and would I buy it again if I had the choice? Hell yeah it's an awesome upgrade over my old 7 Plus! Part of me thinks I should have waited for the XR to save a few bucks but that's water under the bridge so IDC

Perhaps if I had the $99 Android phone I mentioned then might have the need to take high quality pictures and video of family and friends at gatherings. This could be a need since it's something the Android phone wouldn't be able to do.

It's like having a V6 powered Dodge Charger then upgrading to the V8 Hemi. Either one will get you to your destination just fine. If you're being chased by armed gunman everyday going to work then the extra power of the V8 might be a need so you can get away. Now if you have a car where the engine is so weak it can't make it up the hill to your driveway then an upgrade is a need.

Imagining Mr. Spock reading your post made it much more enjoyable.

You are sick. There is almost nothing new from XS unless you are a film maker and really need the advancement in the camera. Otherwise, you are sick.
I never understood people that have the need to upgrade each year (regardless of their income) as its all about value. People seem to lie to themselves that they are indeed getting the value back but they are not. 2 year cycle is minimal if not longer these days. In US its a bit different as they have the upgrade program so you are kinda bound to that but elsewhere is frankly stupid.

I went from 3G -> 4 -> 6 and now I think I will upgrade this year because I think that will give me great value.
Of course, people will disagree but those ones that do usually don't care about value or they have the sickness of "needing" the latest. :)

I'm glad I'm not one of those. :p

I would say it depends on your scenario. If you're about to be past due on your mortgage, you have no food in your refrigerator, and your car has bald tires then I would say rethink your priorities. Now if all your bills are paid, you're doing well financially, and you have the extra $$$$ then absolutely not. Either way it's your money but spending extra money on something you enjoy isn't a big deal. Some spend thousands on their cars, others spend thousands on travel, while some spend it on electronics. Do what makes you happy!

Exactly. Everybody's situation is different. People spend money on all sorts of hobbies. My buddy just dropped $1,100 on for two new guitars this weekend. Another buddy dropped $1,500 on repairs to his fishing boat.

In neither case did I feel compelled to lecture them about wants vs. needs or the value of upgrading vs. keeping what they had. Their money, their life. If they asked me about the items they were looking at, I would offer my opinion. But would never feel it was my place to tell them why they should or shouldn't spend money they planned on spending.

If you have the money then not at all.

I would upgrade every year but I can't afford it.

You upgraded to the Max because it offered a superior experience. That was want over need. Why you’d get an 11 now I don’t understand, unless you simply desire a smaller phone.

I have XS Max and I usually upgrade, but due to the ridiculous amount of a down payment t-mobile wants for the pro, 256gb I’m waiting. Yes the battery and camera sound nice, but for now I’ll wait and pay off the rest of my phone.
