Hopefully, by next year, the exclusivity agreement will be over. This doesn't mean I will automatically jump ship. But, I'd expect AT&T will then start to try to satisfy their iPhone customers by then (the effects of added competition). At$t has a really bad "my way or the highway" attitude right now.

you cant exaggerate HARDWARE.. its a 3mp camera with video recording autofocus camera. compass for better gps .. more RAM double speed.. faster internet... again you cannot exaggerate Hardware

I don't think he said hardware, i think he said "apple tends to exaggerate claims". You would have to be totally ignorant to think apple shows the exact way the iPhone or any hardware performs in a keynote. Its not just a keynote its also a sales pitch.

Why is everyone so convinced that the 2010 iPhone is going to be a major upgrade?

It might not be. The way i see it is that just as there was a big jump from the original iphone to iphone 3GS there will be a big jump from iphone 3G to what ever the next one. So just as people are saying the 3GS is not worth upgrading to from the 3G, next year might say the iPhone 2010(or what ever) won't be worth upgrading to unless you have a 3G/2G. See the 2 year cycle developing?

i dont think you quite get the point

its finacially unwise to pay a premium for the latest and greatest, even if you can afford it, if the current phone suits your needs

agreed.

Also does everyone here who owns an iPod/iMac/MacBook upgrade everytime a new one comes out??? Don't think so.... Why should it be the same for the iPhone??

However, and this is meant with the utmost of disrespect, when I see the comments of a couple of fanbois, I think I must really be a sad case to be making the same purchasing decisions as they are.

Why the "disrespect" comment? That's not needed, because it is very truthful. And by waiting for subs pricing, the financial risks of the purchase decrease tremendously. It's likely that all these fanbois still live via their parent's money and do not know the concept of financial responsibility and living within your means (which is the reason the average American citizen is a financial mess).

A very good comment on your part. My statement "with the utmost of disrespect" was me trying to be cute as we always generally read and hear "with all due respect" when in actual fact the person has no respect :)

I've read most of the posts on here and it seems that most folks are looking forward to the 2x Apple claimed speed improvement and some have boasted the battery life improvement, even though the battery specs are modest at best.

Well we should all know by now that Apple's performance estimates are stretched. Does anyone get the full battery life out of their Macbooks?

I'm with the other poster who is willing to wait a week or so post launch to get real unbiased hands on reviews. I'm also willing to wait to see if jailbreak's released for both 3.0 3G phones and the 3GS as that will be a major deciding factor as well.

As far as the 3GS itself, it seems to be missing some things I was expecting.
1) OLED screen - sharper, brighter and very battery efficient. (Available now in the Sony Walkman)
2) Extended battery life - just like in the Macs.

The 3GS dismal battery improvements are probably due to the increased memory size. Which makes sense since audio playback seems to have the biggest improvement. It has additional room to fetch files into memory.

No but realistically, does anyone need all this? It's the same to me. I don't even use the full 16GB's on my 3G, I use Wi-Fi mostly, don't even care about Bluetooth, and yes I can get video on my iPhone and some voice control. The camera is the only major difference and it is only one megapixel more. No big difference.
Is this a serious question? No, no one NEEDS a faster iPhone. But if we only bought when we needed most of us would still have an iBook that got the job done.

And yes, just because you don't use 32gb, doesn't mean we don't. I for one, do.

You don't care about Bluetooth? Neato! I do, as well as many others! You not needing something doesn't talk for our necessities.

You only use WiFi? I'm glad, now I won't need faster 3G, because you use WiFi.

Camera is a big difference by the way. Autofocus is an astronomical update. And 12fps with Cycorder has nothing on a 30fps built in, and you don't even have to jailbreak and slow your phone down.

Try again.

The main reason I would like to upgrade is the 32GB hard drive, and the speed improvement would be good but this is not a big issue...

My contract will only allow me to upgrade in a year's time unless I sell this handset and buy another, but I don't think the upgrades are big enough to warrant this.

People moan about the battery life - I don't find this to be an issue, the phone charges really quickly and usually holds for about a day for me under normal usage. I have a charger in the car and a JBL dock on my nightstand. If my battery is low at the end of the day then I put it on charge on the ride home, 30mins later I'm home and the phone is almost fully charged.

I think if Apple had put another video camera on the screen side of the phone (for proper video conferencing / skype calls) or made the camera a 5MB camera then I would be more attracted to an upgrade, but who knows these things may only happen next year and then I'll be due for an upgrade anyway.:apple:

Well I'm still on an 8GB 2G, so this is a very exciting device for me. I didn't upgrade to the original 3G because I was waiting for 32GB (which is still too little as my 160GB iPod is full, but it's a big step forward). The rest is nice to have but of course I'll welcome them with open arms.

Great thing with iPhones is that they hold their value very well. I'm on my third and each time I've resold the device for the same price I bought them for.

Of course living in Belgium I'll be buying a retail unlocked and don't consider €600 excessive at all, it's pretty much in line with prices of top-end smartphones from HTC etc.

Ive only had mine a couple weeks, but Ive been happy with it so far. That said, since DH was due for an upgrade he is taking my 3g and we ordered a 3gs for me (since i use my phone for more things than he does)

I've been extremely pleased with my 3G but the improvements in the 3Gs were enough for me to order the phone
For my needs the increased speed is a big plus also the better camera is a welcome changed and I'm looking forward to the video capability

Value is subjective and while many 3G owners think not upgrading is a better use of Their money I think getting the new phone is a smart move for me
