When Apple announces the first iPad mini and put the price up on the screen the stock took a nose dive. Same thing with the iPhone 5c. Amazon stock is up 3% today even though the phone isn't that cheap, no revolutionary/unique data pricing and locked to AT&T. I don't get it.

With Apple, folks hype and set expectations. The hype with the mini was that it would launch with a retina screen, that it would be a phablet etc. With the 5c it was supposed to be $199 full price.

Didn't happen so folks were disappointed and so on

There were not such expectations with amazon

What? Of course there were. Hence why most comments on tech sites are negative. People were expecting this to be Moto X/G type pricing. On CNBC this morning Jon Fortt was throwing out the idea that Amazon would go the route of sponsored data to partially subsidize data plans. The only thing that wasn't a surprise was AT&T exclusivity, because that leaked before the event.

This should be interesting to see in person. Ive always been a fan of amazon. I was hoping to see this as a "free" phone after contract.

Interesting idea but limited to the very closed Amazon ecosystem is a big turnoff for me. I'm staying with my Samsung Galaxy S III until the iPhone 6 4.7" model arrives. :)

What about battery life ?

Battery size: 2400mAh. Talk time: up to 22 hours; standby time: up to 285 hours. Video playback: up to 11 hours; audio playback: up to 65 hours. Ofcourse, with Android, your milage may vary.

exactly......haven't seen any specs yet, but all those cameras and video processing have to eat battery

As for all the silly usual trash talk, please understand that, competition makes thing better for US consumer. So you should always welcome them and give credit where it's due, so that it keeps Apple innovating not slacking and milking which they have done since the iPhone 4. If Amazon can set 32GB as market standards as an entry level phone, and everyone follows, who wins?

You ever go shopping? You know, the stores that say "up to" 90% off?

I think we all need to be very cautious about battery life until we see how it performs with all the "buzz features" turned on....If you have to strip it down for battery life then what did you really purchase?

Just saying....lets wait and see cause I don't believe anything that says "up to"

This is great APPLE news!

I'll be the first to say it: I don't care.

Common, you've gotta admit that phone has a lot of potentially useful features. It's obvious Amazon has put a lot of thought into this, and if all these features work as advertised, especially that Firefly function, with companion developer SDK, they could very well have a winner on their hands.

And even though this is MacRumors, it would be dumb of us to ignore and close our eyes, to what's going on outside of the Apple 'universe'.

For those pizzing on this new Amazon phone, well, they have to start somewhere. Remember, the very first iPhone wasn't exactly overwhelming either - it couldn't even run apps.

Plus it seems there are very few features that are hardware specific. Even aspects of the Firefly feature already exist on the Amazon iOS app. What is the point of Amazon doing its own hardware when it's goal of getting more people to buy stuff from amazon.com can be accomplished via software?

It's called the "expectations" . At this stock point for Apple, it is expected as follows : iPhone 6 - to solve global warming, ATV 4 - to stop the war in Ukraine and Syria, iWatch - to reimagine the concept of space/time.

Even Tim Cook was furious with that stock growth expectation sometime last year.

That being said, we all traded some battery life for transparent effect and perspective tilt effect, didn't we ... And we love that gimmicks when they are nicely done.
But, how do Apple "dynamic wallpapers" compare with this Fire Phone shown ?
Apple range is - dyn.walls : blue, yellow, red, and even grey !!

I love the dedicated "send us more money" button. :D

Also adding 4 hardware cameras for a pointless 3D gimmick, seems a little over the top. You will show it off to a few people when you first get the phone, then never use it again.

Didn't see any mention on Amazon about the materials of which this Fire is made - either screen or the rest of the phone's shell. Does the screen have protection against scratches, and is it resistant to breaking if dropped onto the floor when I get up from sitting?

And can the battery and the memory card be replaced by the user?

These may have been commented previously, but I'm not going through more than 300 comments to see if it's been asked / commented before now.

If there was a tiny bit of interest that sort of started to grow in me, this is what finally killed it:
Amazon's Fire Phone is exclusive to AT&T ...

I waited until for about 5 years to get an iPhone because of that same reason.

I don't think I would ever trade my iPhone 5s for anything else, except a new iPhone.

I prefer to do it the old fashioned way, by looking up and away from the phone. It's amazing what you can see when you do that. :D

Except in that case you must know where you are going so why would you need GPS instructions in the first place?

So I can use this to buy anything??

Anything, anytime, anywhere, new, used, shipping choices, books, movies, music, six cameras, firefly, 3D and a 45 min battery life.

But is the headphone jack on the bottom?

You’re missing my point. 3D animations of the World Trade Center don’t make turn by turn navigation better. If you are using turn by turn navigation and need a 3D image of a building to help you navigate, then you are lost in more ways than one.
