WHY?
Have you heard about "cloud" computing???? Why would I need a 56 GB phone when I can have a 100GB cloud service? Every user is different, and I listen to raw audio, so I HAVE to go to the cloud in order to get what I want. If your an MP3 fan, 16 GB's can supply MORE than you can listen to on a commute.

Normally, I'd agree with you as I don't like the "where is my 128GB iPhone" crowd. However, I have a 16GB iPhone and I can't wait to get a 32GB version. I'm not what I would call a power user, but I have 91 apps (about 1/2 of which I use at least weekly), along with only 231 songs, 7 very short videos, and 326 pictures and my iPhone is FULL. I currently have 314MB remaining. Which is fine, until the iOS8 update requires 2-3GB free to install.

While 16GB could still work for me, I shouldn't have to spend my time managing my app, photos, and songs, nor killing my data plan with constant uploads and downloads. I also will not buy or download a game more than 100MB right now.

So, assuming Apple doesn't change it's plan, I'll be spending the extra $100 next time for the extra storage.

This is great APPLE news!

I'll be the first to say it: I don't care.

Are you really that short-sighted that you can't see the relevance of this to the iPhone? You don't think Android has in any way influenced the development of iOS or even Samsung have influenced the development of the iPhone?

Anyone else notice their earbuds? Absolutely shameless ripoff of the design and shape of EarPods. Their Maps interface is an actual clone of Googles Maps interface on iOS/Android. "Dynamic Perspective" is an obnoxious parallax effect that most users don't even seem to like much on iOS.

Lets see....anything else novel and useful that wasn't ripped straight from Android or iOS?

Yay competition!

First thing I noticed was the Ear Buds - BLATANT rip off, they look identical (except they are black)

One fairly cool gimmick just can't compete with Apple's valuable, deep ecosystem. I could develop for the Amazon phone but... eh... the really good stuff is on iOS.

As I said when the rumours started, what I am interested in is a phone with stereo camera and auto stereoscopic display.

Like the Fujifilm 3D digicams, but in a phone.

And new 3D digicams from Fujifilm would also be welcome.

Just get one of these for your iPhone/iPod touch for those rare moments that truly lend themselves to a 3D photo...

I'm a computer scientist who has spent a bit of time in the same visual recognition space as this. The work behind the face cameras is difficult, not easily reproducible. But the work behind firefly is just plain amazing. It works more usefully for amazon than apple (since apple only sells apple products, accesories, videos, music, and books, while amazon sells EVERYTHING)

Well if they want everyone to have this phone, it should have been free on contract on all carriers, and sold at cost around $250 off contract.

So can we please be honest and say this is a $600-700 phone that is discounted due to subsidies?

If you want an android phone, go get a Nexus. This thing is terrible.

Scathing comments on other forums from pro-Android, pro-Amazon folks. This phone is DEAD on arrival and it is all due to price and having only one carrier. Unlike their Fire tablets which compete on price, this phone essentially has priced itself identically to top tier smartphones from Apple, Samsung, and others. It starts at $199 with a 2 year contract on only a single carrier, or $650 unlocked but still restricted to only AT&T for service. For this you are getting an Amazon only ecosystem phone, no Google Play Store (Amazon's selection is far more limited), a gimmicky parallax feature and "Firefly" which is nothing more than another way to get you to spend every one of your dollars with Amazon (and Firefly like features are available through apps on every other platform).

If you look at Amazon tablets they sell to folks who want a "good" tablet but don't want to spring for an iPad. Had this phone been free on contract or $250 for an unlocked version... all on any major provider you would have a compelling alternative to Apple, Samsung etc. but instead Amazon hopes you don't notice the lack of apps, real world polish with calendar, contacts, messaging etc. when you are blinded by the "cool" effect of parallax tracked to your face.

This phone is DOA. It won't exist in this pricing or form in 12 months (I like Amazon, spend more money with Amazon than with any other business in my life and am a long time Prime subscriber.)

Yes but wait until this catches on with the teenagers, sports stars, and rappers..

Have you heard about "cloud" computing???? Why would I need a 64 GB phone when I can have a 100GB cloud service? Don't be silly. It's not just for music. RAM is also for apps. With everything else on there (photos not included as Amazon is giving away free storage for that for Kindle Phones), how many apps do you think can fit in 16 GB? Good luck running apps from your cloud storage lockers.

The Dynamic Perspective looked amazing to me, I don't understand all the negative comments on here. I think Apple may well be worried by this.

The negative comments are due to the Dynamic Perspective didn't come from Apple. If it did, it would be magical and revolutionary.

Apple has always been the essence of a company that does few things and does them really well. Amazon making phones and tablets? - it doesn't make any sense. They're an online shop for everything, and the only hardware that ever made sense for them to make was the kindle due to their great ebook catalog. I don't know what they're doing in this market now, and quite frankly they should just be focusing on what amazon is truly about: ecommerce, not this crap. :)

They are making it easier to buy products on their site ... not that much of a leap.

Great to see Amazon enter the phone market. Some seem to think that if the competition didn't exist Apple would be making the great phones they are, not a chance. It's competition whether indirect or direct that spurs companies on the make things better. More competition means we as consumers win! So I'm chuffed :)

I'm actually impressed. For an initial phone from Amazon, I kind of expected another typical Android style phone, but they actually did their own thing that seems like it will work. I don't know that it is direct competition with Apple, but it does have some cool stuff on it. I think they would have been better off setting the prices about $50 lower and making it cheaper than what they will be competing with. However, the inclusion of a year of Amazon Prime is actually a very good deal, but one people may not realize is a good deal.

I don't think that. I think it's more of a feature like Samsung tends to put out. Is it cool, yeah, but not even close to necessary. Maybe helpful in something like Maps, but on the lockscreen and other places it's not needed and will likely just lead to killing more battery life.
