I've heard this before, but I've also heard from a number of people who used grey discs to install OS 10.3 and 10.4 on other hardware models besides the one they were intended for.

In any case, however, my point was that they are not locked to the specific computer, even if there are customized to a single model.
They are locked to a specific model. The gray discs run a check against the machine ID.

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2186

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2191

But, the 10.5 install discs that shipped with my MBP and MP look exactly the same. They say nothing about what model they are for. Thus, I highly doubt that they are customized.
The specific model and version of OS X will be listed on the discs.

There are a few antics they you had to or could play with the gray discs. Like running the HD 2600XT under Tiger on the original 2006 Mac Pro using the Late 2007 iMac's specific build. There was a special build for the Core 2 Duo MacBook Pros and you had a branch off with certain 8600M GT driver updates as well.

Actually thinking about my last post, the Up-to-date disks ask for the specific machine that you are using when trying to buy it through apple.com. I'm sure they send you a machine specific disk, it's not like the drop-in disks through Apple retail.

$29 ain't bad.

I have two macs and two copies of Leopard. Can I buy one copy and install it on both computers? Or do I need to buy the 5 computer family pack?

I'm confused. Will the $29 Snow Leopard include Iphoto 09, Imovie 09, Garage Band 09, and Iweb 09? I have all those applications currently on my Mac Pro. I use them all the time. Will I lose these applications if I upgrade to the $29 Snow Leopard unless I purchase Ilife 09 along with it? Thanks

Upgrade to Snow

Ive only owned my mac since 10.5 so this might be a dumb question but can I buy this through apple.com and download it? Or do I have to go into a mac store.

dom

You can upgrade to Snow Leopard if you bought a Mac within the last few months, not sure or dont recall the specific date, but go to their site and peek about, its there and available for quite a while.

I upgraded mine for three machines @ $9 each with free shipping.
All was done through the Apple website. Shipping indicated about a month ago that copies were being shipped around Sept 09.

Good Luck

UPDATE: I forgot to add this from Apples page;

Multiple Qualifying Computers on a Single Invoice

If you purchased multiple qualifying systems on a single invoice, you can either (1) purchase a Single-User Upgrade Kit for each qualifying product, at a cost of US$9.95*; or (2) purchase fewer Single-User Upgrade Kits and request the Right to Copy for the remaining qualifying products.

OS upgrades do not include the iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, etc.)... but you will not lose your current versions by upgrading to Snow Leopard.

for example, when I bought my MBP 3 years ago, it came with iLife 06 preinstalled. I upgraded to Leopard, but my iLife 06 is unchanged... and when I upgrade to Snow Leopard, I will still have my 06 apps on there running smoothly.

I hate to keep posting my Disk Utility report, but the permissions are never fixed & it does in fact affect the stability of the machine often despite what some others here have stated.

On PowerPC Macs, Tiger is still more stable than Leopard & will run for a longer period without a reboot.

I suspect there will be a class action lawsuit against Apple when Snow Leopard is released since it is basically BUG FIXES & optimizations,
many of which the PowerPC users who spent $129 on Leopard could use.
We shall see.
I can't wait for my $9 settlement coupon. :(

Only Intel Mac

Yes, I do.
If there was a line at the apple store for leopard, there will be a line for this. Cuz, its just $29, and to many people, its a bigger deal than leopard. While all leopard did was get a lot of new features, that many people didn't care about, and actually made some machines slower. This is putting all its energy in the right place and giving every machine a much needed speed bump.

You would mean to say every Intel Mac, not every machine. There still is probably more PPC Macs around than Intel Macs.

There are more Nintendo Entertainment Systems than iPhones. What's your point?

Unfortunately they won't ship until it's released, so you won't have it on the day it comes out.

Amazon typically works it out so they ship a few days before it's released. It's very common to get software, games, movies, books or anything else you buy through amazon before anyone else does.

I wonder why they don't offer a full retail copy, without the box set.

Might be unofficial, but I think the "Leopard upgrade" IS the full retail copy.

The box set is, I think in reality (not officially), a deal for people with older operating systems who tend to have old copies of iWork and iLife. This way, when they get Snow Leopard, they also have a good version of iPhoto for example.

I expect the Leopard upgrade actually will work on Tiger. I'm gonna be pissed if my family gets the Snow Leopard Family Pack for their Leopard machines and it won't install on my early-2007 iMac. We already have iWork 09 and iLife 09... Which is why I think it's just official naming stuff and not the more complicated actual reality.... Just like the regular copy will install on just as many machines as the family pack will, even though it's not really supposed to.

?What?

This doesn't make sense
"Snow Leopard is slated for a September release, no official release date has been announced."

So september is a for sure thing or will it be out before free like all the other Operating systems?

Regarding PowerPC Macs...

Why do people always attempt to compare apples to oranges and think they made a clever point?

Almost no one uses an NES system anymore.

Tons of people are still using PowerPC Macs and iPhones!

BIG DIFFERENCE!

There are more people using NES than iPhones and PowerPC Macs combined, but you don't see NES people complaining that new games don't support their system.

What is this, a BS fest? Leopard has been absolutely ROCK-SOLID and virtually bug-free for me since at least 10.5.3...besides, the occurrence of permissions messages has NOTHING to do with stability of the OS. You probably just came here to troll, but it's hard to read so much crap without answering.

Finally, what happens once SL is launched upon the masses?

Answer: MS IS DEAD.

Cant find a simple answer anywhere here so here goes my Q...

I have a Leopard Retail Disc that i bought for my Mac Pro and I have a AluMacbook that came preinstalled with Leopard.....

How do I get my upgrade disc....?

I have a aluminum, unibody macbook with leopard on it. I also have the iLife '09 suite. If I upgrade, can I still use the iLife that came with my MB?

On another note regarding installing/upgrading the operating system: When I do this, will everything on my machine get wiped out, I.E. files, pics, music?

Yes.

No. Not unless you do a complete format of your drive.

You have choices when upgrading to Snow Leopard. You can read about them here.

iLife is totally separate from the operating system, be it Leopard or Snow Leopard. You can reload iLife from the restore discs which came with your Mac if you choose to erase and install.

Has no one every bought a software upgrade before?!

All this talk of confusion regarding the upgrade is ridiculous. Software upgrade versions as opposed to full versions have existed for years. It's not complicated, it saves you money.

I'd imagine the upgrade disc is identical to the full version - apple have never had multiple versions of the same version of OSX - the upgrade will simply check the current operating system and only allow the upgrade/full installation if the criteria are met. This would be as simple as having 10.5 installed already, or a working copy of 10.6 already in place (for those reinstalling the system for whatever reason).

It's not complicated, it's not unusual. Good on Apple for offering an upgrade path to save us all money, and all the complaining idiots on the site simply need to get a grip. It's a software upgrade, or a full version purchase if you don't qualify for an upgrade - hardly reinventing the wheel now, is it.

Speculation and criticism of apple based on how you think this might be complex is simply ridiculous - they do know what they're doing you know - it's why they are a successful multi-billion dollar company.

So quit the whinging and either upgrade if you qualify or buy the full version if you don't. Simple.
