This costing more than Prime is goofy, my guess is they will eventually start charging Prime members for it after they get used to having it.

Also wondering if this will come to older devices ex Sonos speakers - because I'm not buying tons of new devices just for this.

I asked it if it was generative or figurative…

It said was innovative

not iterative or destructive

But most certainly instructive

So I asked it to be demonstrative

I said wow you are so reiterative

But it then claimed to be creative

I said be more imaginative

But then it admitted its place in the products was decorative

It's almost like it's a ploy to get more people to shop on their platform. Money grab. Data grab.
And your point being....? Should a business not want to attract more customers? Should a business not want to make more money for its investors? And essentially every interactive digital system these days, from Amazon, to Google, to Apple, to Meta, to Microsoft, etc. etc. will always use the data it gleans from customers to try and tailor and enhance its products and services. This is how money is made. But please feel free to find a successful business that doesn't do any of this.

It should cost over $100 a year? I guess that’s one way to look at it.
Tech R & D costs money and it has to come from somewhere. I have Amazon Prime so it will simply be bundled into my yearly cost for the Prime service. And with the amount I use amazon, I more than make up the annual fee in savings on shipping alone. So Alexa+ will be essentially free for me.

Subscription services are the way of things and have been for some time with various software subscription services that so many complained about but which are now quite commonplace. Now I do agree that the cost for Alexa+ annually for non-prime members, nearly $240, seems high. But I imagine this cost will be adjusted given consumer interest over time.

Regardless, costs must be covered and new tech is expensive. Many businesses have found subscriptions to be the way to go in many cases. You may not like it but there is nothing keeping you from using the original Alexa service.

I’m surprised that Bezos is allowing Alexa+ to answer questions that don’t involve personal liberties or capitalism.
Yeah, I stopped shopping there earlier this year and ended our sub as well. Not a fan of the owner and his beliefs. Plus Amazon as a whole is a front for everything china junk.

What about Amazon's Rufus, the best AI ever? Rufus and Alexa, will they won't they?

monthly
Alexa+ = $19.99/mo
Amazon Prime = $14.99/mo

1 year
Alexa+ = $239.88/year (paid monthly)
Amazon Prime = $139/year (paid 1 year up front)

😂
Wtf so we get to pay for this privilege nah I’m cool. I’ll remember my mom birthday and schedule crap on my own.

Households with an Echo Show 8, 10, 15, or 21 will be the first to get early access to Alexa+.
If it ends up being limited to these Echo Show devices only, that is a non-starter for me. I had two of them and the screens were full of ads half the time with no way to turn them off. I sold them both and got Echo Spots instead.

Dude chill. It was just a sarcastic observation based on the comment I was replying to that compared the two prices. But thank you for the lesson on "how money is made."

Not exactly the upgrade I was hoping for. I was desperately hoping for a way to change Alexa's voice reading Kindle books. You can change Alexa's regular voice. But when you ask it to read books to you, it uses the default one and there's no way to change it to use the selected voice I chose.

Amazon today announced the launch of Alexa+, a new version of Alexa that includes large language models, agentic capabilities, services, and devices at scale to redefine "the way we interact with digital assistants."

amazon-alexa.jpg

Alexa+ is smarter, more personalized, and more proactive about making suggestions to users, according to Amazon. The experience is designed to improve as users interact more with Alexa, and Alexa has been updated to have more personality.

Users can expect a smoother and more intuitive experience when speaking with Alexa, and the personal assistant will be better able to understand what a user wants regardless of phrasing. Alexa continues to have integrations with various services like Spotify and Apple Music, along with smart home devices.

Amazon says that Alexa+ uses "devices, context, and knowledge" to create a "simple" smart home experience where users can control multiple smart devices with one request, create routines with voice commands, and adjust home parameters without explicit requests. If a user says "I'm cold" or "it's too bright," Alexa will know to adjust the temperature or dim the lights without being asked.

Alexa+ essentially does everything that the current version of Alexa can do, but better. As an example, Amazon says you can use Alexa+ to play music, but also have "broad-ranging conversations" about your favorite artists. Or you can play movies and TV shows, but also ask questions about characters, episodes, soundtracks, and go to specific scenes. Alexa is able to do things that other chatbots like ChatGPT can do, such as answering complex questions. Amazon has a list of 50 recommendations to try with Alexa+, and some of the options are below:
  • Explore any topic, have full conversations, and get real-time news.
  • Ask Alexa to remember important details like a frequent flyer number, restaurant names, recipes, and more. Alexa can remember things about users too, such as dietary restrictions and allergies to take that into account when making recommendations.
  • Ask Alexa+ for details in documents, notes, photos, and more.
  • Manage calendar schedules and turn emails into events.
  • Get personalized recommendations for books, movies, TV shows, podcasts, and more.
  • Set up routines with commands like "every morning at 7 am, turn on the coffee pot, slowly turn my bedroom lights on, and play some peaceful music."
  • Build grocery lists and order groceries by voice.
  • Have Alexa+ look out for deals on an upcoming purchase.
  • Order takeout, book rides, and make dinner reservations.
  • Get food recommendations and meal plans, plus set intuitive cooking timers such as a timer for a medium-rare steak rather than a specific time.
  • Send announcements to specific Amazon devices.
  • Generate images.
Amazon is allowing Amazon Prime subscribers to access Alexa+ for free, and non-subscribers can use Alexa+ for $19.99 per month. Early access will be rolling out to eligible customers in late March. Households with an Echo Show 8, 10, 15, or 21 will be the first to get early access to Alexa+.

No thanks Amazon. Rather use Siri.

Mark Garman says it’s frightening how behind Siri is.

I just want Alexa to get smarter about my music preferences and what I have asked for previously so I don't have to argue with her every time I want to play a song.
