Amazon is a big company that can pay big salaries to its decision makers so I'm pretty confident that there are smart people behind these decisions. Your maths is however useful because it does beg the question about what is going on. A couple of theories of mine are...

1 - For various reasons Amazon might get additional value from boosting it's Amazon Prime subscriber numbers. Perhaps that helps it negotiate better prices for licensing of externally made Prime Video and maybe other content such as other channels under the Prime umbrella (where it presumably takes margin on those subs). It also perhaps makes it more likely that any Alexa+ queries that result in a product recommendation could immediately translate into a purchase via Amazon. Even without a Prime membership Alexa+ could still say in an answer that some item the user needs is available from Amazon but it is probably a more compelling hook if Alexa+ can say "... available for delivery tomorrow at <some-price>. Do you want me to order it now?". This pricing difference you pointed out could clearly boost Prime membership numbers since for anyone wanting Alexa+ it is cheaper to sign up to Prime than take a stand-alone Alexa+ subscription.

And the more sinister theory...

2 - We're about to see an increase in Amazon Prime pricing!

Tech R & D costs money and it has to come from somewhere. I have Amazon Prime so it will simply be bundled into my yearly cost for the Prime service. And with the amount I use amazon, I more than make up the annual fee in savings on shipping alone. So Alexa+ will be essentially free for me.

Subscription services are the way of things and have been for some time with various software subscription services that so many complained about but which are now quite commonplace. Now I do agree that the cost for Alexa+ annually for non-prime members, nearly $240, seems high. But I imagine this cost will be adjusted given consumer interest over time.

Regardless, costs must be covered and new tech is expensive. Many businesses have found subscriptions to be the way to go in many cases. You may not like it but there is nothing keeping you from using the original Alexa service.

Forget new tech, Amazon still need to pay for the old tech. They’ve lost billions on Alexa, to date.

If it ends up being limited to these Echo Show devices only, that is a non-starter for me. I had two of them and the screens were full of ads half the time with no way to turn them off. I sold them both and got Echo Spots instead.

They said on the day of the announcement that it’s coming to the majority of Echo devices except some very old ones.

They’re starting with the Show models because there’s a big visual component to the redesign.

I presume it can be disabled then, and we can stick with the normal Alexa.
The generations are different in the U.K. than in the U.S., your second Echo dot is our first, I think.
i doubt it will come here for 12 months or more, suits me.

I doubt it will take an entire year to reach the UK but we'll see.
