This thread is utterly pathetic.

Pages upon pages of people arguing about consumer electronics. Have modern lives become so meaningless that this is what animates heated discussion?

There's a difference between discussion technology and what is going on in this thread.

True, there isn't much discussion on MR anymore. It's more spreading FUD and opinionated comments loosely tied to random blogs that either get upranked or downranked based on the reader's feelings.

The more negative marks you get the better the comment.

More importantly though, why has MacRumors begun talking about commercials and not new hardware and software?

Pretty effective commercial honestly. I know how much better the iPad is on... well, on everything, but to the average consumer...

They buy the Fire, they try the Fire, many of them likely return the Fire.

But Amazon can still call it a sale

----------

Let's be real guys ... you can't downplay the value proposition of getting 3 Kindles for the price of an iPad. I think Amazon is smart to play this angle since it puts some perspective on how much money you are really spending.

But what about the value of that money. Spending $100 isn't bad, unless I'm getting something that is only worth $10

That's ok, the iPad can't perform like a single Kindle at e-Reading. Different devices, different functions, for different people.

Yeah, the iPad isn't restricted to one single source for your materials.

And while yes right now there's a sun issue, who knows what is about to happen on that front.

[...] I mean, I could probably buy 100 book for the price of one Kindle, but you don't hear us talking about it all time.

Here we go, can someone make a spoof of that Amazon Kindle ad and post it on YouTube?

Take the original ad, replace the guy's iPad with a 79$ e-ink Kindle and replace the Kindles with a paperback book for the lady and comic books for the kids.

Amazon is farking stupid. Why would you want to carry around 3 diffe

Because their point isn't YOU will, but your family will. No fighting between the kids over who gets to control the iPad, they each have their own Fire.

In that regard it is a smart move, but they could have made that point without calling out another product. Once you do that then you open up folks attention to the other product as well. You give it free advertising. Bad move.

Calling out the other product in a negative light, also a bad move. Makes companies look petty and like they are afraid of the competition.

The Kindle isn't any more restricted to a single source for content than the iPad.

I can't speak for the previous models, but my 4th generation e-ink Kindle (non-touch, the only model available in Canada) can read .txt and .pdf files natively without conversion.

It even connects to my Mac mini as a simple USB drive, you can't even do that with the iPad and I'm still wondering why.

When I buy an iBook - I can read it on my iPhone and iPad. That's it.
When I buy a book from Amazon, I can read it on my iDevices, Android, Computer, etc

Restrictions come in all shapes and sizes. Pick one that works best for you

What is the point of going on vacation if you are just going to read..

4 people sitting around reading and watching movies in front of an beautiful beach...

you know whats more expensive than a kindle? a wasted vacation reading

not everyone wants a vacation with keg stands and cliff diving

The "I am a PC, I'm Mac" ads employed, very successfully I might add, both of those supposed "bad moves"...how do you make the case that something is a better value/fit than something else if you don't at least imply what that something else is? It makes zero sense for Amazon, or any other tablet maker, to pretend the iPad doesn't exist....

This was a very good if not brilliant commercial....

I still don't get it. Why would they mention the iPad in a Kindle commercial?

...it's a KINDLE!!!

That's like, "You know, I could buy one thousand slices of bread for the same price as that Kindle."

It doesn't make sense.

Pepsi mentions Coke...

Chevy mentions Ford...

Apple mentions Microsoft...

What's not to get? Amazon wants to go head to head with Apple and the iPad, whether Apple, you, or anyone, wants to or not...and you know what, it's a damn good strategy too....

You do realize that competition is good for the consumer don't you?

Apple 'destroying' the competition doesn't 'win' anything for you. (oh wait, let me guess - you're going to claim you own thousand of shares in Apple....)

Look at the iPhone. A lack of competition resulted in trivial updates like landscape keyboards, 1 MPS camera and MMS coming year late. A perceived threat by Android led to the iPhone 4 sporting an HD video camera, retina display, etc.

The best thing for the consumers is for Amazon, Samsung and others to keep pushing Apple (and each other) to innovate.

absolutely. In fact, I said that right in my post.......

the idea behind me wanting to see apple crush the competition comes more from Amazon directly going after Apple when I thought they were marketing their products as different devices. It's like Apple has the big foot and amazon is the ant. Apple says don't bite me or i'll step on you. the 'ant' bites them and gets squashed. Apple has the power (right now anyways) to do the squashing.

No, I don't own a thousand shares, but you can bet if i did, I would be traveling or doing something interesting :)

In fact, when I bought my G4 way back when, the iPod came out shortly after and I remember telling my wife we should buy shares b/c they were on to something. Of course, we were young, just bought a house a few years before, new baby and no money to spare. doh! That's not 20/20...just the situation at the time.

Cheers,
Keebler

No, the fact that Range Rovers are bad trucks with poor reliability makes the Kia Rio a better car.

You could have picked a better comparison, like a Honda Ridgeline or Toyota Sequoia.

Honda ridgeline isn't even a truck with its fwd based unibody platform and fully independent suspension (terrible for truck things). Its an accord with a lift kit.

Kindles are nice devices

I like to feel I'm a solid Apple guy, using a Mac Pro at work, I've had 2 iPhones, use a Macbook Pro at home, and I refuse to buy any Windows computers for myself. And I openly mock people who buy Android phones.

However, I wanted to get my girlfriend a tablet device, and decided to try the Kindle Fire for her. I also got myself a Kindle Touch, because having looked at someone else's eInk Kindle it seemed a lot easier to read to me that the LCD screens.

So far I've been quite happy with both devices. The Kindle Fire is pretty awesome from what I've seen. My girlfriend uses it daily. And I have been quite happy with my Kindle Touch. Are they perfect? No, I'd like to see a built-in calendar app in the Fire, and I've had to "reboot" my Touch. But I'm no more disappointed than I have been with any other electronics item I have bought.

So they are definitely not "crap". The wealth of apps on the iPad is still awesome, but the Fire is a strong competitor at 40% of the cost.

And you speak of Mannors ?

Actually I think YOU are being too sensitive. You took what I said and twisted it.

Not sure how I twisted what you said. And I wasn't being sensitive, just stating a fact. I simply said that my wife doesn't have a problem reading on the current iPad, and your response was a little overboard.

As for my "mannors", they only go so far. I'm not a turn the other cheek kind of guy.

Wouldn't it have been much better if she was like:

"yeah but I only read, my kid's are the ones who play games, watch movies, etc (list everything the ipad can do) so I got the two of them kindle fires"

then the guy would be like "whoa tablets for the whole family, sounds expensive"

to which she could reply "no it cost less than that."

Stupid commercial which focuses more on trying to point out that three Kindles cost less/the same as an iPad. Fair enough, but then you think about it. The bloke asks about when she wants to surf the web or watch movies, and she says she has a Kindle Fire for that. So Amazon fail to realise they're boasting about the fact you need to carry three devices around to get the functionality found in a single iPad.

Fail.

I don't mind iPad is more expensive than 2 3 Kindles together. But ...

"So who's sitting here?"

That's gotta be the most painful part of this ad .. :(

The "I'm a Mac" campaign did not involve a specific PC device.
When you mention, let alone show a competitor's product in an Ad, you've already lost.

On my iPad I can buy books from Amazon, Kobo, iBooks.
On the Kindle you can buy books from...Amazon.
