lol at all those "music experts" in here, genres change over the years which is a good thing and it's great that u still like the beatles or sth from 30 years ago but don't expect the next generation to care about them just bc they were hip back in the day. imagine everyone having the same taste in music, how lame would that be ...

No, this is wildly smart and financially savvy. It's a great use of advertising budget dollars. They could spend millions on advertisements, or pull you in with a door buster deal.

1. It pulls people into their MP3 store, many for the first time. Now they see how easy it is to buy there, cheaper than iTunes mostly ALWYAS anymore.
2. Giving the first year of Cloud service again inducts a user in the service, and when their $20 renewal arrives it's money in Amazon's pocket.
3. The Amazon MP3 store with the Cloud Drive could lure people out of itunes. Imagine people who work in office settings that are maybe allowed to ahve music, but don't have thier itunes at work. Cloud Drive... one of the few practical reasons I can see people using it.

I also think the record label knows what a stinker this album is. It's ok, mostly filler tracks and pales in comparison to the first. They've done everything from promoting it in Farmville to giving a track a day away... I bet Amazon is getting an incentive to do this as well.

I agree, I am actually listening to the Cloud player right now from work :) Some of the tracks are actually pretty good. For a buck, 20GB for a year of online storage is a great deal!

So release any old crap and market it very well and you have a winner.

A lot of people would argue that's precisely how Apple works too ;)

You're thinking of Microsoft.

Your posts tend to make sense, but this one doesn't. No-one is forcing you to actually use the cloud service. Just simply do not use it. I haven't.

At 99 cents you can get them all and then delete the ones you dislike, unlike iTunes, which I'm guessing is 99 cents per song.

This is what I couldn't glean from Amazons site. Once I download them can I move them into iTunes, or are they stuck in the cloud? (I honestly don't know I can't find that info).

My concern was it appears like (and I could be wrong so please correct me if I am) that by buying the album at 99 cents you are auto enrolled in Amazon's 20GB cloud service which is free for the first year and then you start to get charged.

EDIT: I solved the second part. No clue how I missed it buy according to Amazon:

"If you qualify for this offer and either have not signed up for Amazon Cloud Drive or have the 5GB Amazon Cloud Drive plan, you will be automatically eligible for the 20 GB plan for one year from the date of your MP3 album purchase. Unless you set your account to auto-renew to a paid plan, the 20 GB plan will revert to a free plan one year from the date of your MP3 album purchase."

I see. Well the Amazon downloader actually offers to place them in iTunes for you, and if you choose not to, the files are available in your downloads folder (if you are using OS X, not sure about Windows) and as far as I'm aware, you simply loose your 20GB of cloud if you don't buy another album, and are left with 5GB.

The email I got from Amazon states that you are not billed at the end of the year for the 20GB storage. You have to renew manually and if you don't your account reverts back to the free 5GB. Not sure what would happen to any files you have above 5GB though.

Thanks! I ended up buying it anyway to see how it works. I have the downloader and I have an option to view the files in Finder. I don't know why I just didn't try earlier, its only a dollar lol.

It won't download yet anyway due to large volumes of traffic but no matter, I have plenty of work to do and listening to songs (or playing on Mac Rumors) shouldn't be on the agenda :p

Why must one company be utterly dominant and "destroy" the other? Why can't Apple & Amazon both have great cloud services? What is this domination mentality? I'm sure that's not very Zen.

Not a fan of Lady Gaga, but for 99 cents I bought it for the purpose of trying out the whole download and cloud procedure. The process is very easy and it looks like Amazon did a great job with making it user-friendly. I am a fan of Apple, I will eventually use Apple's cloud solely, but Amazon's Cloud player is nothing to complain about.

As for the comments about Lady Gaga and her music...you can't expect everyone to enjoy her type of music. I mean, she has sold tons of albums and was considered the most powerful woman by Forbes last year, even placing her ahead of Oprah. Think of when Rock came about... There were plenty of people against it. Same with Rap. People are just naturally scared of change. You can trace this back all the way to the days that polyphonic music was introduced.

I'm not trying to bash those who speak negatively of her, honestly I think she's crazy half the time, but I've learned that those who bash on any artists are musically immature. They will eventually come around and become open to all types of music.

Pretty impressive. One song from that album on itunes costs more than the whole album on Amazon. Plus 20 gigs of storage.

You bash music because it makes you feel good to think you have better taste than others... and then those others are thinking exactly the same thing about YOUR music.

And then people like me feel good about criticizing those who criticize other people's music. Humans, we're wacky. :p

Hahaha best comment ever

...but it's very "13 year old"

I think that it's a common mentality among pre-teens and early teenagers.

Which, unfortunately, is what I worry that the Itoys have driven the average age of MacRumours members towards....

To be fair, I'm sure that their servers are getting hit hard because of this.

I buy music from Amazon all the time, and downloads are usually fast with no issues.

+1 I rarely purchase from itunes because of Amazon. This is the FIRST time their services have taken a hit and I have bought hundreds of MP3 from them.

I just wanted to pop in and say that Amazon's method of downloading is utterly unintuitive and could be done much better - I downloaded a new version of the AMZ Downloader and installed it, but the website kept insisting that I needed to set it up. I thought it was because my default browser was Opera when I was using Firefox to make the purchase (which is strange, but that's how I fixed the problem last time), but the Cloud Player doesn't work in Opera, and it still wouldn't work even after I set Firefox as the default browser. Finally I noticed a link that said "already set up?" and a link to the .amz file it needs to start downloading the tracks. After that, it was fine - all the tracks showed up in iTunes afterward.

I made the purchase at around 1:30 AM PST, which I guess was before everyone woke up and saw the price and hammered Amazon's servers. I had no problem at all downloading the music.

Seems like the Record Labels may not like this move by Amazon.... they are devaluing the market for paid downloads and I'm sure that makes them nervous.

I have to agree with the other poster... Amazon looks nervous. I'm sure they're taking a financial hit to try and capture some business.

I agree with you in that the Record Labels are nervous. They've been that way since CDs replaced vinyl. However, Amazon is making an aggressive move to buy market awareness. I'd not call that being nervous. This is a form of advertising, and an effective one, it seems.

You need to give credit where credit is due. She beat out the Beatles for the most hits in a single album.

EDIT: I can't find the specific article where I read that and information on the internet is all over the place, but from a majority of sites I fact checked on she does indeed have the most number 1 hits from a single album.

Mentioning the Beatles and Goo-Goo in the same sentence is blashpemy. One is the standard by which all are judged, the other is a talentless bimbo.

Totally agree with you on the lower age group mucking up the discussions with idiotic comments. I've had to use "blocking feature" of MR like never before, this year especially.
