Well I guess that rumour of Amazon Video hitting the App Store within a few weeks was nonsense then. Must have amused the CS people to see their little joke all over the Internet for 5 minutes.
Well seeing that this was first announced Nov. 28, I think there's still time. It's been less than three weeks. I anticipate a Christmas launch.

LOL. It is certainly on my wish list.
Mike: Glad you got my humor... What do you use now to get Amazon Video? Just airplay?

We are having problems with airplay on the ATV4 due to 2000ms audio delay, since Apple dropped S/PDIF. Setup: ATV4 to HDMI Receiver. Receiver(s) are different Pioneers. Siri remote won't play nice with any of the receiver(s) volume (no +/- on direct connect nor "learn" the function). Lots of posts regarding Pioneer receiver problems. So, for now, we airplay audio from the ATV4 to old ATV3 to receiver, to use volume on Siri. This is Progress? Sylver added airplay delay support on NAStify, but not a lot of developers have.

We have HDMI FireStick/Roku (low cost) and various game consoles.

Wish the FireStick was more powerful so it would play side-loaded HDHR View properly. Then you could "live watch" your DRM channels, like FOX, or ours like Starz(s).

We also have the Nexus Player. Great for DRM channels, but I haven't gotten side-loaded Amazon to work. In progress, though. So for now, even with the ATV4s, we have 1-2 other inputs.

Can't wait to get EVERYTHING on the ATV4. This was my "hope" 4-5 years ago, still not there yet.

Yes. Watched final season of Falling Skies via AirPlay. The X-ray was pretty interesting. But can be distracting so did not use much. I had no problems. In the past I watched Orphan Black on ATV 3 via AirPlay. Waiting for season 3 to hit Prime. So hoping for native app on ATV 4. Regarding audio. Noticed your comments before but I am not that into audio. My wife keeps saying turn it down :). I did get BT Bose head phones for ATV 4. I have sound bar on a couple TV's. Years ago I had surround sound system but not any more. The Siri remote works well to turn on / off TV's and control volume. Never need a second remote. For my Vizio 70" 4K. It will turn on TV which will turn on Samsung Soundbar and them remote will control sound bat volume. On Sleep the ATV will power off sound bar but not tv. I have TV set to power off with no activity in !0 minutes. Other non sound bar TV's work well but not all perfect. Our Samsung with Samsung sound bar works well.

Mike you're killing me. I would be so glad just to get stereo sync with just volume control on the remote.
Receiver is husband's requirement. Although, he has looked at Sonos sound bar. We also have SS tvs, maybe a SS bar could be in our future.

I keep saying turn it down :). We ladies must have more delicate eardrums.

Haha. Buy him some BT Headphones for xmas. Win win.

Regarding the SS setup. In my case I run the Apple HDMI into the SS Sound bar and from there to the TV. The Soundbar only has one input so this is a problem if you have multiple devices. But this is the reason I only want 1 device connected to the TV. With the Vizio I go from the Apple TV to the Vizio and from the Vizio HDMI to the SS Soundbar via the special return HDMI (forgot name). Anyway when the only input device on a TV is the Apple TV 4 the things become much easier.

All other TV's do not have sound bars so very easy. ATV 4 to HDMI 1. All SS work well with HDMI-CEC. However, my kitchen Vizio does not always either turn on or off consistently. But pretty easy to just push power button (on face of screen) while standing in kitchen. Most of the time I let everything tune off with my sleep timer set to 1 hour. But end of day hold home button down and say sleep.

It would be a nice xmas present. Doesn't the app store close down for xmas soon though? Time may be running out...

I read that Amazon intend to re-encode their catalogue in HEVC anyway, including 1080p material, to save on bandwidth, so wouldn't that make an app less likely?

Because the Apple TV doesn't support the codec. At least not natively.
I don't think this will be the excuse for not supporting the ATV4 if they decide not to support it. You are suggesting that Amazon will simply stop working on pretty much every device currently in use. Right?

And all the devices which currently have Amazon Video do support it? I suspect they don't. Amazon will have to keep those devices fed with content for many, many years to come.

if true...
Even if they provide legacy support for other devices, they arent going to spend engineer/dev time to create 'more' legacy devices.

Exactly. If you are phasing out a particular codec, then the last thing you want to do, is introduce another app supporting the very codec you are trying to supersede. Would the increase in number of subscribers to their service upon creating a TVoS app really be worth it to them? I can't see there being that many people who would suddenly subscribe to Prime if an Apple TV app is released. It just seems to go against their strategy.

That makes virtually no sense whatsoever. All Amazon care about is the number of subscribers. They'd stream to connected microwaves if there was a market for it. The precise details about codecs are totally irrelevant.

If that were true, why was there not an app day one and why are we still waiting?

I agree it's illogical. There is also no Amazon app on the Chromecast, despite the huge sales of that device. And yet Amazon apps were there on day one on the PS4 and XO.

Send an email to Amazon and ask them. I have and got nothing of any worth back, but they may relent if more people pester them. Their behaviour is inconsistent and frankly baffling, so much so I wonder if even they understand the nonsense that is their policy towards app development. I bet it makes the accountants unhappy though.

This has been discussed ad nauseam. One theory is that Amazon doesn't want to give 30% of revenue to Apple and also doesn't want to offer a crippled "view only" app that doesn't allow in-app purchases.
