Me Too...

I'm getting tired of people complaining about things like that. It's Apple and competitors news that can be relative to the sales or direction of Apple products.

If Amazon releases a tablet with features or specs to compete with the iPad, it would be useful to know that than just assuming the iPad is the best.

I agree with you 100%. I dislike seeing comments from someone every time there is an article posted about Android, Microsoft, Amazon, whatever. I mean, would these whiners rather not have anything to read on this site? It's not like the site is going to fill up and not be able to post true Apple rumors just because they posted a Samsung rumor or something. The more news the better!!:)

The tech support feature is really innovative, and the price point is really great. I might pick one up on a whim as I sparingly use my tablet.

It should also be pointed out that Amazon charges $50 and $100 to go from 16 to 32 and 64, compared with $100 and $200 for Apple. So not only is Amazon beating Apple on price and specs like resolution, their price advantage widens by another 50 and 100 bucks as you go to 32 and 64.

It's only a matter of time before Apple needs to give in on the storage pricing. Or at least keep the price but bump the base model to 32.

Amazon seems to be doing pretty well with their tablets, I wonder why they haven't tried making a phone yet? Seems like it would be a no brainer for them at some point.

It's a competitor to the iPad, so it does have some relevance here. Same reason there's occasionally Microsoft and android news here.

well I come to check out Apple news and rumors, and not news about its competitors. If I wanted to check that out I'd go to some other site that covers a variety of companies. :)

Good old AmazonRumors.com. Always timely information.

lol my thoughts exactly. :D

Then you don't have to read it or post in this thread. There's plenty of apple news on this site, and right now there are 24 stories on the front page that are apple related only 4 that aren't.

I think these are good solid tablets if you are mainly interested in consumption of media, and Amazon ecosystem is top notch, their prices on music, video and books generally blow away apple's, I think they are really smart in how they are approaching this with their own Hardware and the app to use on other hardware.

So Amazon makes zero profit on the hardware. How much money are they making off of selling other people's merchandize and books/movies/TV/music? It's easy to be "competitive" when Wall Street doesn't care whether you make a profit or not. I can't think of another for profit company that can go quarter after quarter reporting next to no profits (often times reporting a loss) and the stock keeps going up, up, up.

great price and specs but dam terrible tablet design, looks pretty ugly and the bezels are huge, no thanks i will stick to my 2013 nexus 7

I've been a loyal Apple tablet user since the iPad1 but the ugliness of OS7 has me wanting a change. Safari in OS7 is just plain hideous and if I could go back to OS6 I would. I'm thinking the time has come to leave Apple and these new Amazon tablets are tempting me greatly. I'm getting the new Kindle paperwhite and now I'm seriously considering getting an amazon color tablet too. They have "no offer" versions too. I'm going to be checking them out closely.

I too thought iOS 7 was hideous when I saw the pics of it before release. Nevertheless, I am a sucker for an update so I installed it on my iPhone 5 and iPad 2 on the day it was released. Now after using it for a few days, I REALLY like it. No it is not perfect, but neither was iOS6. I like 7 better, by quite a bit. And this coming from someone who never missed a chance to spout off about how very ugly the icons were in 7. Now, I like them better. Looking at the wife's iPhone now which still has 6, they seem old and dull. Sometimes change really is good

Of course Amazon beats them on price because nobody cares what Amazon's profit margins are, or if they even make a profit for that matter. With Apple Wall Street clowns complained that the mini was too expensive at $329 but then when Apple reported quarterly results and margins were lower than analysts estimates (because of the mini) then they hammered the stock. I'd say it should be easy for Amazon to make a great device when they can sell it at cost. Most companies couldn't get away with doing that.

I'm a big fan of the Kindle e-ink reader. My kindle keyboard is still going strong. But these things? I think the OS is a huge turnoff. Its as though Apple made a giant newsstand as the home page. A good tablet needs to be app-centric. Also, given all the cheap Android tablets, the low price is no longer revolutionary. I think these things will sink like a stone.

E-ink is so much better as a reader, but sucks as a tablet while the opposite is true about these.

I agree with you on this price. It's just too high.

People who buy Kindle Fires weren't interested in buying the iPad to begin with. When I say interested, I mean that they WANT an iPad, but can't justify the price.

These same people go on to spend $100+ foolishly anyway.

Really? Everyone in the world who wants a tablet wants an iPad?

"both of the Android-based tablets feature a new quad-core 2.2GHz Snapdragon 800 processor, 2GB of RAM"

With infinite amount of lag to go with it.

After this, I just don't see how Apple could release a Mini without Retina.

Past KF sucked because processors sucked. If it really uses Snapdragon 800 that's the best processor out there; the same processor goes into Samsung Galaxy Note 3. galaxy S4 has Snapdragon 600. I wonder how the top of the line processor made into a $230 tablet...

This is an interesting release... and something I will be investigating. A few things I really liked about previous Kindle Fires, that I wish Apple would pay attention to:

1. Speakers - The 8.9 version of the previous KF had room-filling sound, which was perfect for watching movies in a room. With the iPad, I'm always struggling to hear a movie/video. But with the KF series, the experience is more like watching a movie from a TV. Really, there's a big delta here.
2. FreeTime - This is a great service that lets a parent control the amount of time kids can use various services. You can specify things like: unlimited book reading, 30mins of videos, 20mins of games, etc. While I wish it was a bit more granular (eg. math games vs angry birds), it's still a good start. This isn't rocket science, but makes a big difference when you're buying a tablet for children. I hope Apple takes notice.
3. Durability - Kids drop an iPad and it breaks... drop a Kindle, and it bounces. This has been my experience, and YMMV. But that's the way it's worked in my household. So, I've been forced to buy a bulky "hardened" case for my iPads, but my KFs just keep bouncing away.
4. Offline Video Viewing - Amazon is adding this capability, and I WILL be using it. Really, this is huge for travelers.

Competition is a good thing. I'll give Apple a few weeks to see if they can address any of the above stuff. If they don't, I'll be adding an 8.9 HDX to the mix.

Well, the time when Apple had a huge market share of devices with huge profits is over. Either they'll have a smaller market share of devices with huge profits or, more unlikely, a huge market share of devices with less profits.

But in any of those scenarios, The stock price will go down.

Unless Apple presents us with another game changer.

Stop living in the past.

My S3 offers a considerably higher OS animation frame rate than my iPad 2, especially with iOS 7. I'm sure the 5s makes my S3 look like a stop motion interface, but Android, on high-end devices, is far from laggy nowadays.

strange -- every time i play with an android device at Best Buy, i notice the jittery scrolling. am i living in the past? is Best Buy? what should we do about it?? is there any information you, the people of the future, would like from us, the people of the past?

Of course Amazon beats them on price...

I was specifically talking about the cost of storage upgrades to 32 and 64. Flash is a commodity and Apple probably gets the biggest quantity discounts on it in the world. There's no question Apple could be more competitive at least on that one feature. And as time goes on they'll increasingly need to.

Besides, whether Amazon is making a profit on these devices or not, Apple does still need to compete, and if they don't they will lose sales. The argument for Apple has always been higher prices justified by better product. Now we're reaching a point where the competition arguably has better product, at least in some ways. If Apple doesn't want to drop prices at least they need to keep their products ahead of the competition. They'll have an iPad event in the next few weeks, the question is if they'll leapfrog these new products or be upstaged by them.

It's a competitor to the iPad, so it does have some relevance here. Same reason there's occasionally Microsoft and android news here.

Yes but does it need to be front page news. Even in the forum there is a separate section for 'the other boys' why not a separate page as well

Apple won't release a mini with retina without resolving the battery issue.

Which perhaps would be resolved by the whole A7/M7 system. Which would also make the mini a contender for games etc.

I for one would like to see the only difference other than price between the two lines be the size but all internals are, as much as possible, the same. Maybe a small difference in battery simply because the Mini is smaller but same processor, etc.

And I would love to see this Kindle benchmarked against the A7/M7

How hard is it to hack a Kindle tablet and run stock Android?

I could see getting one for that reason otherwise, give me an iPad.

I tried to order Odeon cinema tickets on someone's Fire HD last week. The most painful web experience I've had since dial-up. That Silk cached-browser thing is terrible.

I wonder if the "Mayday" feature will come under the same security scrutiny as the iPhone's fingerprint technology? No, of course not, the media doesn't care about bashing any non-iOS devices.

Seriously, what is the current P/E for AMZN? Payback is literally measured in eons.
