I'm already invested in the Apple ecosystem. I don't own an iPad because its too big/heavy for me. I thought Apple would never do a 7" tablet and was gonna get the original Kindle Fire but Amazon never brought it to Europe. Then the Nexus 7 came out and i was happy but by that time rumours of the iPad mini surfaced so i'm just gonna sit out for that.

Test before you buy... My nexus 7 is amazing. Prefer it much more than an ipad

I agree. How many kindle users are out there in the wild now? surely somewhere around as many as iPad? and all with amazon accounts downloading books from the store at a phenomenal rate. Surely a good percentage would be tempted to upgrade or buy another tablet to watch movie content, games, apps etc.

I prefer iPad myself but to many kindle owners these products will be tempting.

Yes, but the Fire has been used as a kind of "starter iPad" of sorts since it came out. Now the Fire HD at the same price point is going to have a difficult time fitting that same niche. Especially since you can get all that same Amazon stuff (minus apps, obvi) on the iPad and it can do more.

Blow through 250 MB in a day or two... doing what? There are wifi networks just about everywhere, and you can store most content you need locally, so once again: doing what? Streaming porn on the way home from work?

Streaming pandora to and from work 15 min drive every day kills a couple gigs a month.

Watching a couple Netflix episodes in an Airport. Most airports I've been to charge for wifi

Most porn streaming sites don't stream HD so doesn't impact data too bad :D

Whoa there, killer. Not only did I say, in my original post no less, that I was playing devil's advocate, I quite enjoy the competition between companies and I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO THE FIRE HD. I would HATE HATE HATE if Apple were the only one left (because if you think I'm an Apple fanboy, don't let me get started on Sony (yes, Sony)).

Besides, I know Amazon is running Apple's cloud, so...it'd kind of suck if Apple were the only one "left".

Oh, missed your OP there- so no offense.

But, can you enlighten me on Amazon running apple's Cloud services?

Amazing that some people can't give Amazon credit where it's due. But I suppose it's one of those damned if they do, damned if they don't type of situations with some posters here.

That's because a good portion of them are petulant blind sheep.

As a Kindle Special Offers owner I can tell you the ads are only on screen savers and are not at all visible anywhere else on the interface. Additionally, the special offers that Amazon has had through the KSO has paid for the device several times over.

I got almost $350 off a Macbook Air last summer (go look at the MBA forum for the craziness that happened when that was released) and another $400 off a TV. There have been several $5 for $10 credit codes and a LOT of other nice deals through my Kindle. And never once did any of the ads EVER interfere with anything on the interface.

Oh dear. The Verge is reporting that they come with ads, which you cannot remove (at least legally). I hope this isn't true with the Kindle paperwhite too.

iCloud uses Amazon web services, you know (as well as Microsoft's.)

What will sell like hotcakes is the updated 7 inch Kindle Fire priced at $159, they won't be able to build them fast enough IMHO. As for the rest, does anybody else think there are too many Kindles now? Too many choices can lead to consumer confusion.

That's not what i'm speaking about. I'm talking about a cloud service that's built right into the OS framework. I'm well aware of AWS and Microsoft Azure but that's just the back-end hardware infrastructure.

iCloud as a software tool is coming along nicely IMO.

Sure, since you asked so nicely!

Amazon runs probably the best web servers in the world. Remember when there was that power outage in Virginia not long ago (June I think)? Netflix went down and so did a bunch of other services (instagram, etc.)? It's because they all ran off Amazon. It's been estimated that they run 1% of the entire internet. Apple licenses some of Amazon's servers as well, the same way they buy parts from Samsung.

Apple: keeping enemies closest.

1) It's AT&T, who only has LTE in ~60 cities so a lot of people will not be able to utilize the speeds

2) 250MB is incredibly low data if you use any type of streaming service on the go.

3) Judging by AT&T/Verizon's overage fee past, it'll probably be $10 every 250MB or something crazy like that. I'm sure AT&T is expecting many customers to blow past the Limit.

4) It seems like there is only 1 plan. The 250MB one. I'd personally like atleast 1Gb a month even if it meant more money each year.

5) AT&T has been known to reneg on data offers. Not being able to select a provider of your choice is troubling

6) Getting a tethered plan with your existing smart phone may be more worth while for folks. Specially heavy data users. You save $200 off the bat for going with wifi model instead.

7) All in all you're paying $50 for 3Gb of data with some extras.

First to address #7 - you're getting a good amount of cloud storage and pretty much $10 back. So if nothing else - it's more like $40 for 3GB of data and some extras.

But to the bigger point/all of your others - if Apple introduced this plan along with its iPad - no doubt many of the posters here would be CHEERING and talking about how innovative/smart/amazing it is that Apple negotiated such a deal.

Amazon presentations are starting to give me the feel that older iDevice presentations had. They have a good amount of features that honestly surprised and wowed me.

These days there's just so many Apple leaks that most of what they present was already leaked beforehand.

Yes, I am aware that they offer good deals. I just think it's a bit odd that you can't give them a bit more money if you don't want them. I'd rather look at a picture of my cat than an ad.

Good news with the Paperwhite, though: $139 gets you no ads.

Anyone else disappointed by the massize square bezel they put on it?

I feel like it's a digital picture frame. I felt the same way when they introduced the iPad. I think the Nexus 7 looks great, and hopefully the iPad mini will not have the square bezel either.

I know...someday i'm going to ignore blogs and get excited about Apple announcements again.

Dang, I kinda regret buying my mom the iPad 2 to replace the original iPad she had that finally broke (half the screen's pixels don't work).

And still no UK models or anything apart from the kindle....
That's why ima get the iPad Mini or the iPhone 5

Amazon offerings are certainly priced right at this point.

Another is my Nexus 7, a very nice tablet in a handy size with a great price to boot.

Best of all is we are finally being presented with very good choices.

259mb for the iPad was $15 a month. I don't know if they still offer that plan. This is less than $5 a month.

Funny you mention that... Current and Legacy Nintendo's are the only system I still enjoy using. Interesting parallel between Nintendo systems and Apple products.

The interesting parallel between Apple and Nintendo, if any, is their tight control and quality standards... well, Apple used to have quality standards at least. Nowadays, im not so sure.

I was unaware that Apple was utilizing Amazon to run any portion of their "iCloud" or cloud/storage services. never heard that before; thought that is why they have (and have been building) data centers.
