Others referring to whom? I hope Apple is included in that list because they haven't innovated in years. Nokia is doing some heavy innovating as well with the lumia.

in terms of data pricing

amazon's been nudging carriers to "think different"

started with the original kindle that included free wireless

When it comes to the context of deriving profit/revenue from store services I can. People act like Amazon is somehow unique because they can sell you a toaster oven. They aren't.

Amazon is unique because its been the dominant online retailer for one and a half decades at the very least. Microsoft adding a store doesn't change that simple fact.

P.S. Samsungs patent portfolio is larger than Apples.

Puhleeze

iPhone 4 - external metal bands for the atenna = innovation
rMBP - screen process reduces glare and thickness = innovation
iCloud - innovation

What exactly has Amazon done that I'm not aware of since One-Click purchasing?

I wish people cheered me on like this when I introduce my 7-Inch

I'm quite confused by the product line here. I know about the original Kindle Fire. Now there's lots of them.

Not that confusing. :)

They introduced a new Kindle eReader "Kindle Paperwhite" with a backlight.

There's the revised Kindle Fire $159 with better screen with a faster processor and updated screen. If you have the current Fire then it's much of the same.

There are two Kindle Fire HD both with an 8.9" screen.

a) Fire HD 16G with 1920x1200 res for $299.

b) Fire HD 4G LTE 32GB with 1920x1200 res for $499. You can also buy a yearly data package for $50 and it comes with 250MB p/mo of data.

This stuff is hot. H-O-T hot. Amazon really is the only serious iPad competitor. If I lived in the the U-s-of-A I would have to seriously consider the Amazon ecosystem. To bad none of the good stuff works up here in the Great White North.

I am very happy with all my Apple gadgets, mind you ;):apple:

Because most users can blow through 250 MB in a day or two. The devil is in the details and we have no idea what the overage is gonna be. If you go over in 1 month are they gong to charge you another $50?

Blow through 250 MB in a day or two... doing what? There are wifi networks just about everywhere, and you can store most content you need locally, so once again: doing what? Streaming porn on the way home from work?

Amazon didn't nudge anyone. They just pay for the bandwidth themselves. No such thing as a free lunch, folks.

Why wait... These amazing specs and low price point begs the question of what kind of person will still see value in purchasing a mini?!

I'm already invested in the Apple ecosystem. I don't own an iPad because its too big/heavy for me. I thought Apple would never do a 7" tablet and was gonna get the original Kindle Fire but Amazon never brought it to Europe. Then the Nexus 7 came out and i was happy but by that time rumours of the iPad mini surfaced so i'm just gonna sit out for that.

I do appreciate what Amazon is doing though because Apple will have to cut pricing on their iPad line soon enough.

Why aren't there more comments about that incredible data plan? How on earth did they negotiate that? That's under $5 a month!

My guess would be they subsidized it into the price- in fact I would bet on it.

If you look closely, the claim amazon made about iPad 3's fastest wifi speed being 22 Mbps was totally false; I've ran a few speed tests on my iPad 3 in the past, most of them were at 30 Mbps.

I saw that, when did apple release an iPad 3? ;)

Again, specs DO NOT MATTER. It's what the specs DO that matter. Two antennas aren't going to make my movies look any better than they already do. It's not something you or I or anyone will NOTICE.

Keep talking yourself into "there is nothing but apple"; fact is when iPad gets it, the clouds will part and the Angels will sing in these forums.

Amazon is setting up to take on Apple at it's own game- just watch; the stadium is nearly built.

Books
Apps
Virtual shopping for nearly anything
Loyal customers
Easy to do business with
1 click
Prime
AWS
the best in the cloud business (arguably)
kindles
Fires/tablets
customer service
on and on it goes.....

competition got lock-screen notifications on iOS

that's the point, it moves technology forward

Hm...I think it was more Apple taking an interest in a jailbreaker's implementation (lifted or not from Android) of a feature. Wi-fi sync was the same (except they didn't hire the guy who came up with the idea for iPhone like they did for notifications).

Many services run off Amazon servers (e.g. Dropbox). It is silly to say that Apple and Amazon haven't been pushing their areas forward (although I'm not exactly happy with how the DOJ became Amazon's lapdog).

BUNCH OF STUFF

Whoa there, killer. Not only did I say, in my original post no less, that I was playing devil's advocate, I quite enjoy the competition between companies and I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO THE FIRE HD. I would HATE HATE HATE if Apple were the only one left (because if you think I'm an Apple fanboy, don't let me get started on Sony (yes, Sony)).

Besides, I know Amazon is running Apple's cloud, so...it'd kind of suck if Apple were the only one "left".

I'm not disagreeing with you, I love my iPad(s). I've used the Kindle Fire and I hate it too. I'm just saying, for many, many people, it'll be "good enough." Just like Android phones.

Agreed. "Good enough" is dangerous.

As always I believe Apple will be able to offer a premium. If an iPad mini hits at $250 my son is getting once for Christmas. I've got a lot invested in iOS apps and iOS just feels so mature to me. There's hardly anything that i'm missing.

I'd easily pay an $80 premium for the simplicity.

Really? a 4GB plan over a month is roughly 133 MB a day. Lots of people use more than 4GB in a month, which equals more than 250 MB in two days. Why do you think so many people want unlimited data? Is it because they plan on using less than 4GB in month? If the "average" consumer uses 1GB in a month they'd go over that 250MB data plan multiple times.

iPad mini leaks in 3.... 2.....

It's your move Apple. Amazon is on their game and know the Fire is a winner. I hear many conversations at work (hospital) about how they have a Nook or Fire and that the iPad is too big to bring to work and that the Nook and Fire does everything they want to do. Browse the web, Facebook and a game or two. Apple needs the 7" iPad at $250. I think that is the perfect price to compete against everything it would have to compete with.

I agree. How many kindle users are out there in the wild now? surely somewhere around as many as iPad? and all with amazon accounts downloading books from the store at a phenomenal rate. Surely a good percentage would be tempted to upgrade or buy another tablet to watch movie content, games, apps etc.

I prefer iPad myself but to many kindle owners these products will be tempting.

1) It's AT&T, who only has LTE in ~60 cities so a lot of people will not be able to utilize the speeds

2) 250MB is incredibly low data if you use any type of streaming service on the go.

3) Judging by AT&T/Verizon's overage fee past, it'll probably be $10 every 250MB or something crazy like that. I'm sure AT&T is expecting many customers to blow past the Limit.

4) It seems like there is only 1 plan. The 250MB one. I'd personally like atleast 1Gb a month even if it meant more money each year.

5) AT&T has been known to reneg on data offers. Not being able to select a provider of your choice is troubling

6) Getting a tethered plan with your existing smart phone may be more worth while for folks. Specially heavy data users. You save $200 off the bat for going with wifi model instead.

7) All in all you're paying $50 for 3Gb of data with some extras.
