Well my credit card is ready for one of the 2.7GHz PM's anticipation is killing me. Must do some work and not hit refresh every 2 minutes. Hopefully can retire my somewhat noisy MDD G4 PM.

First of all, 400MHz RAM is not slow, as you can see by AMD's usage of it as well.

Note that since AMD has an on-chip memory interface, each CPU has its own memory on a 128-bit bus (dual channel).

A dual AMD has two memory controllers - effectively quad channel (or 256-bit or 800 MHz, depending on how you want to multiply).

Apple's 32-bit bidirectional FSB is completely different - a dual Mac shares one dual channel memory system.

Does anyone have a sense of how long it typically takes to for the stores to come up after the US store has gone down. Since we're not waiting for a keynote to finish, I'm not sure what type of timing to expect. I've got to be at work in an hour and it takes a half hour to get there. I'm wondering if I'm better off leaving now in hopes of getting there before the stores reopen or if there's a decent chance they'll come up during the time. Thoughts?

Well it seems that the stores will probably be up in about 19 mins - according to dannykos - he talked to a salesman earlier today and he was told the stores will all be online at 1:30 GMT. So assuming you need to be out the door within the next 19 mins, then it is theoretically possible to view the page momentarily before leaving!! :D

SGI still make workstations with custom MIPS processors. Only their linux products use Pentium chips. This would be like apple selling Power PC based computers for OS X users and general x86 based machines for linux/unix consumers.
The story is the same with Sun. They still sell high end SPARC systems, only the Java based machines and servers use AMD chips.

SGI also sells Itanium workstations (http://www.sgi.com/products/visualization/prism/).

Those Sun "Java-based" workstations are supported with the following operating systems:
  • Solaris 10 (x86)
  • Solaris 9 (x86)
  • Red Hat Linux
  • Suse LINUX
  • Windows XP

Sun made the move because they couldn't sell products...

Sun made the move because their RISC chips couldn't keep up with x86 CISC chips. Sound familiar?

I know SGI use Intel, my mistake for using the Pentium name as opposed to the company. The post I was replying to however stated that both companies had abandoned their custom chips for x86 products which simply isn't true.
Sun products didn't sell fullstop. They weren't fast enough and were too expensive. Apple managed to sell ageing G4 products because as a package including software they are still competitive.
We won't see a x86 mac for a long time yet, if ever.

We'll be back soon

The Apple Store has their customary "We'll be back soon" sticky note. PowerMac update within the hour.

edit: </redundancy>

hee ...what Mhz is it? Specs. Never know I might be interested in it.

It is a dual 1GHz with twin 80GB Hard Disk and 3/4 GB Ram, with Bluetooth External dongle and Keyboard. I am looking for £500 ( + freight) for PM, also will be selling Apple 17" display for £200. Will sell when New G5 Arrives. PM if interested.

ARGH!

I want updates!

Now!

lol

Having fun listening to music over AirTunes however and realizing I have no true need for a new Mac. Oh, well. Tax rebates are meant for this kinda thing.
