The more competition the better? Um, only if you're getting a cheaper phone. In the end you'll still end up with a two year contract after you pony up the standard $200.00 bucks.
This not not about competition. It's about getting that stock price up. Amazon doesn't give 5 fu**s about creating a GAME CHANGING SMART PHONE. They're sourcing off the shelf tech with their named stamped on it.
They'll get them ass clowns at CNET to do one of their patented, bogus reviews where they'll talk about the device while it sits on a table, OFF, and how they feel it'll fair in the crowded tech space.
GTFO!

Sigh...another demerit for 3D in the perception of the general public.

Meanwhile...you can build a rocking 3D home theater these days for just over $1,000 and little bit of DIY. Which is what I will be enjoying tonight.

Amazon just want "things" to sell... they amass SKU codes like hoarders, shipping them in their trendy little "frustration free" boxes. The more anonymous brown boxes they ship, the happier they are; what's inside the boxes is irrelevant.... a little bit like this "news" >_<

In other news - people should take this report much like all the other reports by analysts - meaning - Amazon might release a phone.

But instead - I see a lot of bashing Amazon for entering the market. Why are some people so threatened by having more options and competition in the marketplace. No one is going to make you buy one or take away your iPhone.

It's not about feeling "threatened" - don't be so simplistic in your thinking, it's about Amazon... who not many people have much respect for.

In related news: I've just released a one-dimensional phone - I can show you it if you like...

3d didn't sell TVs, didn't sell game boys, and won't sell this phone. A non-starter.

if 3d tv started with cheaper passive glasses, i think it would have sold nominally well

3d sold a ton of 3DS devices

on phones, even Apple uses faux 3D on the iOS home-screen

…

Did you watch Gravity in 3D?

The Oculus Rift is 3D.

We see the world in 3D. 3D adds immersion and depth. Watching a golf game or any sports on 3D is a game changer.

iPhones are already 3D, but they keep trying to get closer and closer to 2D with each re-design. :p

Knowing Amazon, the 3D thing will be a gimmick, but they'll price it at $0 on contract and maybe $350 or so contract free. That will be the real story. That said, the Kindle Fire HD hasn't exactly set the world on fire (pun intended), so whether Amazon takes much share from Apple or Samsung is very much up in the air.

3D is crap

It's only tricking your parallax into imagining a body is in 3D space because the brain extrapolates position from parallax. Notice, that's not the way you see 3D for the most part. Mostly, you go with nuances about surface detail. See how 3D everything is and watching. Yes, in an extreme case, your brain can do the processing to interpret vanishing points that aren't really there. But mostly we use detail and richness of color, and understanding physics on a basic level, to establish the three dimensions out of two. Anybody think a lover, whatever your choice, is not 3D?

That's why trickery is used, and it's why a large slice of the possible audience just gets sick when they were VR glasses. The two things work together.

4K or 8K is the best way to see things in three dimensions. A good picture has depth of focus, of colour, they create a space around them. Playing the trick with the red and green glasses -- even if it's with polarizers, etc. -- tricks the brain and tells it stuff that the 2D is saying NO to. I like outer space movies in 3D, because you can float there and have no other cues than the stereo effect.

Amazon announcing generic, own-brand instant chicken noodles would illicit more anticipation.

Apple: "Think different"

Google: "Think for a bit, then get bored and abandon ship"

Amazon: "Let everyone else think, then we'll clone what they do"

They aren't threatened, they just have no concept of reality and think anything that isn't Apple is literally the worst thing on earth. If Apple EVER does a 3D thing 90% of these people will be praising Apple for doing something new and revolutionary and magical. But since Apple isn't the company doing it, they may as well kill themselves for being worthless idiots.

If you honestly think Apple is still using that motto you are out of your mind.

Yes, more competition is better for consumers. One guy tries to outdo the other, hence fragmentation and bloatware.
I bet Apple is loving this as it watches androids kill each other. Microsoft finally has a fighting chance with its win81 phone OS, not a bad thing!

Take a breather my friend, it's all just irrelevant.

Yup. At least Microsoft made THEIR OWN OS, are focused on the UX and are making an effort; Windows Mobile, Windows Desktop - very much like Apple, in that respect, and (apart from app lack) very smooth and appealing, so I hear. I may not like WinMo or Windows 8.1, but their work, although a tad misguided and late to the party, is good and solid.

Android... the "whore" of operating systems; available to vendors for free, dressed up in gaudy clothes and sold as "iPhone killaaaa", whilst it's code base veers further and further off target (if they even have one).

Riiiight...

Every gadget vendor sees Android as "that free OS we can use, and hide it so people think it's our OS" - a bit like Desktop Linux, (only Desktop Linux is actually okay, and very useful).

If the logo doesn't put you off Android, Android will put you off Android:

Bleh - let them destroy each other, and even if they don't, the quality control of these Android device vendors is so laughable, that iOS is standing, insulated, calmly laughing, no matter the outcome (it always was - it existed before Android was even a pipe dream) :D

For you perhaps.

BTW - how's that parallax effect working out for Apple?

If the 3D screen is a more advanced version of what is used in the Nintendo 3DS then it may be good for only one orientation. Assuming that the technology has advanced to the point where this is not going to be the case, then every smartphone and mobile device should have a 3D screen.

A parallax effect is what the iOS 7 home screen does. The Amazon phone would probably be more like the Nintendo 3DS portable system, which uses an autostereoscopic screen to simulate 3D. If you're in a certain viewing area, your eyes receive two different images.

There's a chance it'll do that, but the article doesn't say. That would be a lot more impressive than just a regular screen with parallax using eyetracking (basically what Johnny Lee did). However, I've seen expensive autostereoscopic TVs in person and the image quality is really bad. It doesn't look better than a 3DS (which I assumed looked bad just because it's a cheap high-margin product). Hopefully they'll have image quality fixed if they go that route.

I will buy Amazon's 3D phone…love my HTC Evo 3D also...

Can't believe how anti-3D some people are. I LOVE anything 3D - have a Fuji 3D camera, the HTC Evo 3D, a PS3 with a 3D monitor for playing 3D games, etc… In my opinion, if you're taking photos, you're missing have the photo if it's only in 2D. Hopefully a company like Amazon can break through the general public's apathy toward 3D. The demand for groundbreaking 3D products should be there. I just think people are lazy (I will gladly recharge and don my 3D glasses… there are so many cool games and movies in 3D)… glasses-free 3D can only get better. Anyway, GO 3D!!!:D:D:cool:

I think it's more a case that 3D has been a failure for the current state of technology, and has been a failure of vision and application, for the people implementing it; a technology used gratuitously for its' own sake is a little pointless unless it genuinely adds something that couldn't be done without, looking back from the current point at which said useful application is mature and working well. I'm glad you're (obviously) a raving fan of 3D, but being a fan of something doesn't automagically make that thing all things to all people, in the way it is to you :)

I'm no more "anti 3D" than I am "anti" square wheels... they just don't seem to work too well.
