It is technically possible to replace the NAND (storage) using off-the-shelf parts. It’s not built in to the SoC. Apple could slash the storage upgrade prices by half and still make over 100% profit margins on them.

Literally, I just want to be able to store my entire photo library (~1TB) on my laptop without spending $800 on $100 worth of storage. I’ll settle to spend $400 for a 2TB SSD, and Apple can enjoy my $300+ of pure profit.

RAM is a different story, however, it doesn’t justify an 200% price increase over the most expensive memory on the market. Just because it’s a different form-factor doesn’t mean that it’s magically 3x as costly.

I need at least 128 GB RAM, 10 gbps SSD to watch youtube, edit word documents, respond to emails.

I had to get a Quantum machine just for hobby Wordpress development…

I've had the MacBook M1 Air for a year now. I hate it. It is so DAMN GOOD it I will be unable to justify upgrading for at least five years.

Had mine for going on 3 years now. Yep, it is that damn good. I sit the whole day working at the dining room table which is in the middle of the room. I couldn't be arsed to run a cable across the floor. But, I don't need to as this machine literally has an all-day battery, for the type of work I usually do on it. Granted, it might not last the whole day if I leave those spinners attached. I'm just running a Time Machine backup from one of those drives to the other, on battery. When done, they are unplugged.

It's quiet, it's cool, I also hate it.....

Why do you hate it after all of the positive stuff you said about it? Lol

I am still aiming for an Apple Refurbished M1 Max Macbook with 64GB of ram. And yes, i need that. I find it insane how they are 2899 on apple refurbished website, the 16" model! Still a beast!

This is a good machine. And it also has a fast SSD, so you don't get gimped when your machine runs out of memory and uses the SSD as RAM.

The M1 Air is one of THE greatest products Apple has ever made. It's quick, great keyboard/trackpad, slim design, lightweight, good quality screen, incredible battery life, speakers aren't too bad either... it's an amazing package but I would say that even though most people might be fine on the base model I would encourage people to see if they can find one with 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD as that is sure to be a combo that will last for years on end (I have one and I love it).

Agree, but you have to remember that once you start getting into 16gb of ram on the m1 MBA , you are approaching 14” M1 MBP territory, which is a much better machine overall.

Correct, yes, because I cannot 'justify' replacing it anytime soon. Who would have thought? an Apple product that.....just works.

On the other hand, many of us just love upgrading our Apple products on a whim and will find all sorts of ways to justify it....

I'm glad you know what you need and are just getting it. When folks have to ask what specs they 'need' they are probably best served just getting the base model then getting on with their lives. Such is too short to spend time dithering over a few GB's of RAM.

Thanks, i might not need 64gb of ram every day, like most of the time i do web browsing, documents, etc. but when i do need it, like color grading and editing canon r5 4k 120fps or 8k 30fps in Davinci Resolve for wildlife videography where 8k is very useful because you can crop to get closer to the animal and still have 4k quality. IMO life is too short to get the bare minimum (what you “need”) of something. I get the amount i want, if i can afford it, and use it with joy when i need that amount of something. Of course most of the time youre fine with the minimum, but i like have extra space to play with. You can always not use all of the RAM, but you cant add more RAM when you need it.

Yeah, who would’ve thought...
But, i understand the joy of getting a new product, and i dont consider it a syndrome or sickness like many do. If it brings me joy, and is not hurting anyone, i am fine with it.

If you want a super yacht and to park it at the Monaco Grand Prix you will pay a rather large price, for both. But if you can afford it, why not? I mention that example because I was in Monaco a few years ago the day after the Grand Prix ended, and all the big boats were still there. I could smell the money. But I'm not that rich, we were staying in a budget campsite in Italy and just took a train in for the day.

To no one in particular, my point is, go right ahead and get the biggest beast of a computer you can afford, just in case. But, if you can't afford it, suck it up cupcake and deal with it by getting the base model ;-) This is the way Apple works.

Could I get by with a Windows and Android? Sure, but I chose a Mac and iPhone, and don't care to go back. I will find the money to get what I 'need' and will do so with joy :)

Ok, it's beer o'clock.

Agree. If you have the money, why not be happy?
And i could just get some expensive plastic HP or Acer laptop, but i just find Macs so much more intuitive, refined and high quality. I understand why people buy them now, not only because its Apple, but because they are just better in every way. You only live once.

No really, I’m as happy as a pig in… with my Apple devices. I’m actually starting to loose count of how many I’ve had. I also don’t care to add up how much I’ve spent on Apple devices and services over the years.

Here’s the thing, my first device was an iPod touch in 2010, and it still works! It still plays (offline) for several hours on the original battery, just no Apple Music. I use my old iTunes library on my 2011 MBP to sync. Still using Aperture on said computer. I also don’t care how much my 1998 Landrover Defender TDi costs. Both moot points.

Agree, you gotta love Apple for how robust and long-lasting they make their products, and how seamless everything feels and is.
I am still rocking my Mid 2010 MBP 15" with an i5 and 8gb of RAM as my daily driver, running High Sierra. No PC would be able to be still working smooth as butter 13 years later. Did a fresh install of HS, cleaned out the fans, etc., fixed the GPU panic issue with MBPMid2010GPUFix by Julain Poidevin, and replaced the stock feet with my own DIY feet made with mouldable, water proof, heat resistant (up to 140 degrees celsius) glue, for extra grip on flat surfaces and better cooling since they rise the laptop higher up for more airflow underneath the body. I also installed Turbo Boost Switcher to disable Turbo Boost when i dont need it (basically always) for less heat.
It is running great! Sure, the screen's not great, and it does get hot sometimes, but it does everything i need like documents and web browsing, etc.! What more do i need? And of course i got it for only 10 euros from my friend who said it was 'broken' with 8GB of RAM, and SSD instead of the stock HDD, and a charger all included for those 10 euros! All i did is fix the crashing GPU issue and customize it, and make it run like butter.
These old MBPs are amazing! And the best part is, you can pick them up for dirt, and i mean DIRT, cheap, on ebay with the owner saying they are broken but in reality they only usually need a quick fix! They are still great for everyday stuff like documents and web browsing, etc.
Aside from battery life, 90% of people, including students, will be just fine with these older MBPs, honestly! No reason to get new shiny expensive M1/M2 chips if youre just doing light tasks, when these older gems are just laying around for dirt cheap. Very good student laptops IMO.

If good sale will buy one.. does m1 airs have same problem with external displays as other apple silicon macs (flicker)??
?? None of my three 4K Viewsonic displays flicker driven by M2 MBP. In fact the operation of the external displays immediately improved from an iffy PITA using the 2016 Intel MBP to "just works" with the M2 MBP.

I've got my eye on Prime Day to see if there is an irresistible deal on an M2 Pro mini or M2 Max studio. I doubt I will see such a deal but you never know!
Also look at Costco. The problem is I have _never_ seen a deal on other than base RAM for M2 Pro mini or M2 Max studio, and base RAM is not wise for those boxes.

M2 max or pro?
M2 MBP Max with 96 GB RAM. My expectation is that given the way UMA works, the RAM is relevant (just guessing though). Currently I am typically using 30-40 GB, so I have plenty left over for displays. The 16 GB RAM (not UMA RAM of course) 2016 Intel MBP was definitely RAM-limited.

I'm not the only one that is perturbed by not knowing what I'm buying with my money.

Imagine your BigCorp. Buying a thousand machines. Used to be Windows had guaranteed 10 years support. This made everyone very comfortable. Accounting can amortize and is happy, Boss is happy, tax man is happy, everyone happy. Got what paid for. Everyone knows exactly what will happen and plans accordingly. What if buy 1000 Macs instead, and support ends in a year? Everyone's VERY UNHAPPY. Businesses do not like guessing with money.

Why did Mac sales plummet almost half, right after they dumped millions of machines last year without warning? That's why.
Nonsense. You need to pay better attention. Mac market share has grown for the last 4 reported quarters. And Apple remains the world's fourth largest personal computer vendor; also the most profitable I believe.

As the price of the M1 Macbook Air keeps dropping more and more, it's only cementing the fact more and more that Apple should make a Macbook SE with this old wedge design. Maybe even take the old 12 inch Macbook and turn that into a Macbook SE.

M1 MBA selling for $749 means that the fabled "Macbook SE" is already in front of your eyes.
You just don't want to see it.
