M2 MBP Max with 96 GB RAM. My expectation is that given the way UMA works, the RAM is relevant (just guessing though). Currently I am typically using 30-40 GB, so I have plenty left over for displays. The 16 GB RAM (not UMA RAM of course) 2016 Intel MBP was definitely RAM-limited.
Damn im really jealous lol...i am looking at a Apple Refurbished M1 Max MBP 16" with 64gb of ram for 2899 now...i think that is a great deal with a warranty and i think the M2 Max doesnt really bring much more to the table.
I am trying to decide which to get, the M2 max or M1 Max, for color grading and editing 4k 120, and 8k 30 for wildlife videography occasionally in Davinci Resolve and FCP. I think i i would be fine with the m1 max, since the m2 max doesnt seem to give much more performance at all, and much more expensive. And besides, Marques Brownle edits 8K RAW footage on it lol and refuses to upgrade to the m2 max, for some reason... The speakers are better on the old version, and the heatsink is bigger on the m1 max.
May i ask, why did you go with the m2 max and not the M1 Max MBP? Extra RAM???????

It is technically possible to replace the NAND (storage) using off-the-shelf parts. It’s not built in to the SoC. Apple could slash the storage upgrade prices by half and still make over 100% profit margins on them.

Literally, I just want to be able to store my entire photo library (~1TB) on my laptop without spending $800 on $100 worth of storage. I’ll settle to spend $400 for a 2TB SSD, and Apple can enjoy my $300+ of pure profit.

RAM is a different story, however, it doesn’t justify an 200% price increase over the most expensive memory on the market. Just because it’s a different form-factor doesn’t mean that it’s magically 3x as costly.
Incorrect. Although Apple's UMA RAM is not part of the SoC, it is baked on to the chip and not upgradable.

Personally I really wanted M2 because it was second generation, with Apple engineers having spent tens of thousands of hours cleaning up (already very good) version 1. I also did want the Bluetooth 5.3 and WiFi 6E that come with M2, but if I had seen a $2899 M1 Max MBP with 64 GB I might have bought that instead. What I really wanted was an M2 Studio Max but they were way delayed so I got the M2 MBP.

The 96 GB RAM is something I bought expecting to take advantage of in the future. 2023-2024 64 GB is enough RAM for me, but based on experience I am pretty certain I will be pushing past 64 GB in 2025 and beyond. To me $400 for 32 GB of fast UMA RAM is a bargain.

That 2899 MBP WITH 64GB OF RAM IS LOOKING GOOOOOD

I bought one at this price for my 75 year old aunt and think its future proofed enough to see her through another decade and then some.
