This is great, that eliminates my biggest problem with Apple TV. Now if they could do something about the touchy remote. I can't pick the thing up without bringing up the on screen display or scrubbing the playhead. Plus I always seem to get it upside-down unless I look at it.

Use the Siri button to guide you. It's the only concave button on the remote, so if your thumb dips into it and it's on the left hand side, you know it's correctly orientated.

Well, that didn't take long. Are they going to start selling the boxes again too? Maybe they realized from their little experiment that people aren't going to buy an inferior Fire TV box just because that's the only thing Amazon allows you to buy. There are plenty of other online retailers that will gladly take our money. As a Prime Subscriber, I'm really pissed off that Amazon refuses to support these platforms. Most of the coding is already done in the iOS version. The point of Prime Video is to be a value-add for Prime customers. It's to drive sales to their online shopping experience. Somebody at Amazon forgot that and now they're not only missing out on streaming device sales, but driving their customers away from Prime by limiting the value-add.

Hey Amazon you forgetting people who still have ATV3 oh well ATV or Apple becoming useless I think my Xbox One loves all the attention.

Apple TV 3 "apps" are a very different thing. They're invite only, hosted on a server somewhere, and written in an incredibly primitive scripting language. (hence why they all look like MS-DOS programmes) Apple TV 4 apps by contrast are full blown iOS apps hosted in an open app store and written with a freely available SDK.

...Will it use the standard Amazon Prime UI, or will it be a low budget TVML type thing consisting of a bunch of tiny thumbnails and text? And will it support Siri Voice Search (a real test of how well Apple and Amazon get on I imagine) and Top Shelf showcase?

It's posts like this that illustrate just how little a lot of people truly understand the new ATV ecosystem. This is an app store environment, folks. Just like the iOS and OS X stores. Any developer is welcome to develop and submit any app they want to the store for inclusion. That includes Amazon. So whether Amazon's Prime app supports certain functionalities in the TV OS app store is going to be completely up to Amazon's development strategy, and whether their chosen functionality adheres to the rules of the store. Just like any developer.

Having said that, Siri voice search is not yet available to any developer. But Apple has already stated that they are going to release the Siri search API to developers. Once that happens any developer will have access to it, and can include Siri searching in their app.

For accidental scrubbing press menu and it will go back to where it was
For the upside down mistake get the remote loop

Thanks for the advice on the first problem. On the second one, I don't believe that the solution is to buy an accessory that one doesn't otherwise want or need, that was designed for a different purpose on the remote.

This is actually a hardware design issue. I know that Jony loves the simple rectangle design, but a television remote should be tactile, so that you can pick it up in the dark and use it without taking your eyes off of the television. As cool as the features of the ATV4 remote are it needs some physical design tweaks. It should have an asymmetrical design, so that when you pick it up you easily know by the feel of it in your hand that you're holding the bottom.

Last month, Amazon removed all Apple TV and Chromecast product listings from its website because the devices do not offer its Prime Video streaming service, which the online retailer said may cause confusion for customers. Nearly a month later, the new Apple TV remains unavailable on Amazon, but that could soon change.

Amazon appears to have confirmed to engineer Dan Bostonweeks that it is developing a tvOS app for Prime Video that could launch before the end of 2015. "Hopefully, within a few weeks span, you will be able to see the Amazon Instant Video app feature on your Apple TV," the company purportedly said in an email.
Apple was wrongly criticized by some in October for seemingly not allowing Prime Video on the new Apple TV, but shortly after the company provided a statement to BuzzFeed News emphasizing that "all are welcome" on the platform -- Amazon simply had not submitted a Prime Video app for the tvOS App Store.Amazon told BuzzFeed News it "doesn't have anything to share" on the topic at the time, but it now appears the company is actively developing a tvOS solution. Amazon Video allows Prime members to instantly stream tens of thousands of movies and TV episodes, with hundreds of thousands of titles available to buy or rent.

Amazon Video for iOS is free on the App Store and accessible by Amazon Prime members. The service is also available on Android, Fire OS, Amazon Fire TV, Roku, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Wii, Wii U, the web and select TV and Blu-ray players from LG, Panasonic, Samsung, Sony and Vizio.

I'm more anxious for vudu than Amazon Prime. Hopefully Vudu will announce a launch date soon.

Why would anyone want Vudu? It seems to me that they offer the same exact product you can get on the iTunes store when it comes to rentals and purchases. Is there more to Vudu than I am seeing? Serious question, because I just don't know.

Personally, I prefer to avoid doing business with Walmart. And Vudu is owned by them.

Vudu as a video platform is available on a ton of devices - Roku, Xbox, TV's, TiVo, etc. So for a lot of people that haven't wanted to get locked into Apple products, they've gone with Vudu. With Apple it's their devices or nothing. With something like Vudu or even Amazon, you have a choice of the device.

Vudu can also be linked to your Ultraviolet library - so for some digital copies (the slips you get with Blurays to redeem a digital copy) when you redeem them they will go into a provider like Vudu. Some studios provide an iTunes code as well, however some don't - so the only way to get a copy is through UV and something like Vudu.

Pricing wise, I tend to find Vudu slightly cheaper overall - maybe by a dollar.

I too would love to see Vudu come to the new ATV. With that and Amazon it would make it THE box to have.

Actually I'd say you misunderstood my post. My musings were on TVML vs iOS native code dev, which is obviously up to Amazon. Same with top shelf support. Siri may not have an open API yet but for a player as huge as Amazon they should get the special Netflix treatment.

I was regretting that I bough an Apple TV instead of Roku because of the amazon prime support... I almost bough Roku 4 yesterday at a local store, but it was cheaper at Amazon so I added to the wish list......expecting to buy it soon.. Ironic.

The only thing that will makes me love the new Apple TV is support for 4k, but this is something that I guess could no be fixed with a software update; so maybe in a couple of years.

...but didn't Amazon pull the new tv from the store?

They did, but here in the UK there are third party sellers selling them. Amazon's reasoning, that they don't want to 'confuse' customers by selling boxes which don't support Amazon video was always BS. Again here in the UK they kept selling Roku boxes (which until a few days ago didn't have an Amazon app) and a UK specific Roku derivative called a Now TV box (which doesn't have Amazon video and never will). They were even promoting Now TV boxes on Black Friday.

Don't expect the ATV4 to ever go 4K. For 4K with Hollywood approved levels of copy protection you need HDMI 2, and the ATV only has 1.4.

Next question for those who have the ATV4 and Logitech Smart/Hub Remote (which uses a RF remote along with a base unit that does IR and Bluetooth), how well does it work since the ATV4 doesn't currently allow BT keyboards? I may continue waiting to see if Apple supports these (although since the ATV4 remote is what allows voice control, it may be another remote that ends up on the coffee table anyway).
The smart hub works very well, other than support for the keyboard. I use my Harmony at least as much as I use the Siri remote. The ATV4 is compatible with the old Apple IR remotes, so you don't even have to change the existing profile. One thing to keep in mind, some apps now require you to use the dedicated play/pause buttons instead of select.

Maybe not the ATV4, but now that ATV has an App Store, the hardware will need to change every year or two to keep up. I expect the ATV5 to come out in a year or two and have 4K support.

Edit: it looks like it 'may' be possible to upgrade from hdmi 1.4 to 2. Depending on the chipset used. And even if they don't go to 2.0, 1.4 can provide 4K at 24 FPS. I'm sure Apple has the clout to get publishers to allow the DRM. That said I do not expect ATV4 to ever support 4K. Just pointing out that it's not impossible.

Why does an app store mean a new one has to come out that often? Macs have an app store and are not updated that often.

It will be interesting to see what a Prime Video app on the Apple TV looks like. Will it use the standard Amazon Prime UI, or will it be a low budget TVML type thing consisting of a bunch of tiny thumbnails and text? The interesting thing is that Amazon has the best app for airplaying to the AppleTV. I watched all of Falling Skies doing that without much issue. It worked great.

And for those of you where Prime is slow these days I'm truly sorry. In the suburbs of Colorado delivery is sometimes one day. I still love Prime and use it far more than any other service.

This is awesome. Amazon Prime saves me more money than anything I've ever done. Buying almost everything from them now and the price savings are incredible. It is without doubt the best savings thing available in the market place.
