Honestly I don't think this is unexpected given the situation of the world and inflation. Shipping as well as all other aspects of the world are increasing by 10% if not more. While people look at it as a 17% increase in price when you look at the actual numbers ($119 to $139/yr) we are talking about $1.67 a month which ends up being is 0.0004% of the salary of someone who makes $50k/yr.

Although your point may have been valid, the chart you posted is a bit misleading as it shows the inflation rates for December of each year rather than the average inflation rate for the full years. For example, while the inflation rate in December 2021 was 7%, average inflation for 2021 was 4.7%. It went from 1.4% in January to 7% in December.

A fun numbers comparison game, but it’s still a 17% increase in price.

As a Prime customer, I really only ever signed up with them for the ‘free two day delivery’, and in some cases one day delivery. But it’s reaching a point, where I don’t necessarily need things ‘next day’ anymore, and to keep justifying these price hikes, is not really attractive to me, when I really don’t use the likes of the movie service or the other services for that matter.

If you’re somebody that frequently orders from Amazon and you really need/want the two day delivery and that would exceed the value of your membership costs, then I could see this being non-issue for some customers.

As inflation continues to rise in other areas in our economy, I suspect that will force consumers to second-guess their renewal. But again, it really depends how much they actually utilize all the services combined.
Maybe at some point they will further break out the different services so people can just get what they will use. I do use their video service and really love their unlimited photo storage service. Just get the app and it will upload all your photos in the background. Like Apple's photostream without the limits.I really was kind of shocked when I went to the Prime page and saw all the "perks". Still don't use most of them though.

I wonder if we will start to see a shift in consumers views towards these mega tech companies. I know very few people that were saddened by Meta's stock plunge, most of the audience on late night talk shows applauded. People are starting to tire of the giant tech companies and their CEO's/executives profiting from the invasion of privacy. Hopefully, people will stop relying on these services so much or other, more ethical companies will start to rise. Probably all wishful thinking, but one can only hope.

Fair
Here's the source.
The trajectory from the end of 2020 through 2021 is up, up, up. So my response to what to expect is more of this and thus more price hikes.

I fully understand this decision. Neither Amazon nor Jeff Bezos have nearly enough money and with prices falling everywhere people have a lot more money to spend. Moreover, I’d expect Prime subs to fall while people are stuck at home during a global pandemic.

Almost jumped ship at $119 and definitely will now.

Quite often when ordering I would price compare between my logged in Prime account against a guest non-Prime price and notice that very often the Prime price is a few $ higher. So obviously they are hiking some Prime prices to make up for that “free 2-day” delivery.

And quite often I would see an item that says next day if ordered in the next x hours. I would select it, and when I get to the payment screen, that next day changes to 2-3.

And, lastly, the stupid “Amazon Day” delivery being forced on us is annoying.

I’m out.

IDK about you all, but I am getting subscription to death if you really think about it.

Walmart+
Amazon Prime
DoorDash Pass
Costco
Sams Club
Instacart Express
Shipt
Grubhub

They all suck you in with trials, get you used to it. You could easily spend $1000+ a year on this stuff. On my yearly budget review it was a rude awakening. It would take some careful planning to maximize the benefit vs. cost of one of these, let alone a combination. In the end I think they make more off of me than I save by using most of these.

We subscribe to almost nothing beyond what I consider essentials (cell, net, utilities, email, 1password, etc)

It’s easier to do than many would think…we do things differently for sure and don’t consume all the same things…

But I just refuse to firehouse away money into endless subs

Re: 1password. Not sure how much longer that will be. I see Cabel just tweeted this…

I hate to admit it, but frankly it's worth it if you use everything they have on offer. Prime Video has a lot of good stuff, and 17% over four years isn't that big a deal.

Amazon profits are way up, and Bezos is removing a historic bridge to fit his yacht through it - the largest and most expensive yacht in the world. And so of course, we should pay more.

That's a lot of subscriptions but more importantly, are you deriving value from them?
