True....but in my opinion that's like comparing apples to oranges.

What about....functionality
I could go on and on.....

Isn't it true for the opposite? Unless they have changed this, Kindles don't have a backlight so try reading it in the dark... I would guess most people read more at night than during the day.

It hurts for the fanboys!

It's funny how the Apple fanboys reacted to this ad. I think Amazon did delivered the message they wanted. You love to read books anywhere get a Kindle and it does pretty well on that aspect that's it! You want more and you can afford both get an iPad too and it can do more than just reading books!

I see that you're an Aussie (or at least living there).

Maui Jim pair #2 was lifted from my checked luggage (along with my drugs) somewhere between San Jose CA and Cairns. I suspect that it happened in Los Angeles on the transfer from American to Qantas. That pair hadn't even been used - some creep got brand new Maui Jim's to sell on the street.

ps: I like Oakley's, but I have very long and full eyelashes. Most of the Oakley styles that I've tried are close to the face (especially the wraparound styles), so that my eyelashes brush against the inside surface of the lens. That's simply not acceptable ;). That's the main reason I bought 3 more pairs of the Maui Jim's at once - my eyelashes didn't brush against the lenses.

I had a pair of prescription Maui Jim's that cost more than an iPad. They were lost or stolen (I'm not sure which) after about a year, too. At least I got some use out of them...

Ouch - that hurts too.

At leaset we've shown that the answer to the question "who spends $139 on sunglasses" is "people who care about their eyesight"....

It's nothing more than momentarily amusing. THAT is the best Amazon could come up with?? You can read books on it in direct sunlight. Ok. And??? It isn't going to take away from iPad sales, nor will it sway prospective iPad buyers. Is there an app for that? Amazon has no answer. Its an ebook reader. Amazon's marketing dept is taking aim at the wrong party. Besides, anti-Apple marketing rarely accomplished its purpose other than increasing Apple mindshare.

Am I the only one who was annoyed that her mouth isn't even moving when she "speaks" her last lines? ^_^;

(actually, watch the whole thing, and it's obvious that it's all post ADR, not surprising for location shooting, but still, it's not even close to matching...)

No kidding. Really sloppy ADR work. It's bad enough I thought it was some sort of joke at first, but I guess it isn't.

Also, y'all might want to get those electronics away from that POOL? Hello...

And do people really buy an ipad just for reading books? That seems...a bit much. And wouldn't all the people who just want to read books outside....buy a book or a kindle? What market is Amazon going for here?

Anyone remember those old things called "books?"

Yes. Those are the things that were memorized and recited word for word by by poets and bards, have been printed on reed papyrus for several hundred years, then scrolls, then hand written on sheets by monks in monasteries up until the middle ages or so, printed mechanically with the invention of the printing press and sold to the literate rich, then collected in libraries where the public could read them but not check them out at first, sold mass market within the last 100 years or so, electronically stored and played back on tape, records and disks, digitally recorded and stored as ascii, .doc, pdf, audio and epub where they could be read on a variety of devices. Eventually, well, who knows? Stored and read holographically? Downloaded and embedded biologically? In short, a book isn't just the physical medium of bound paper pages. That's just one very small but important way the data was stored and the information transmitted to your brain through your eyes (if you're sighted), or your ears or fingers (if you're not).

Maybe I'm not a typical consumer, but...

When I saw that advert, my first thought was, how much did she spend on those sunglasses??. Second thought was only $139?. I mean, okay; the iPad ads get plenty of airtime and they cost a lot more, but you get the impression that Amazon think that most people have hundreds of dollars they'll just burn on sunglasses and kindles?

Maybe not most people, but they think that some people do....

I have both.

For reading books the Kindle is in a different league to the iPad, it is way better, indoors or outside.

For everything else the iPad is much better.

I would not think that they could be compared side by side, they are both hand held, thats about it.

My wife stopped using her Kindle and got an iPad after using mine. She rarely reads outdoors and usually reads in the evenings/at night, where the Kindle doesn't do so good unless you have a light.

In our home, the iPad is the winner over Kindle. Sorry Amazon.

When I got my iPad I handed it to my wife, who was reading her Kindle. She held it for about 5 seconds, handed it back and said "too heavy." Those 2 works pretty much summed up her thoughts about the iPad.

But she reads a lot, and likes to hold her Kindle one-handed.

The iPad is about twice as heavy as the 1st gen Kindle, and the 3rd gen is even lighter.

That's a nice little shot at Apple. They are pretty flippin' bad for reading outside.

But, it's pretty much all they've got going for them feature for feature.

"$139" - that gets you no apps, no extra functionality, no nothing.

kinda like spending $139 on the iBooks app.

Which choice is logical now?

My wife had the DX which is similar in size and weight to the iPad. She gave her Kindle DX to her mother so it is no longer collecting dust. ;)

Mine were $289 bucks. Some people pay for quality items. In the time I have had my sunglasses my gf has gone through about 8 cheap pairs.

You can read iPad in direct sunlight with polarizing sunglasses.

Just makes me think she was ripped off buying those sunglasses! :D

She's wearing sunglasses that's why she can read her Kindle. When I wear my Ray-Ban polarizing sunglasses I can read my iPad fine even in direct blinding sunlight. Try it!
