As MacDawg pointed out: It is not healthy for you to stay in direct sunlight - you will get cancer from that. Be smart and look for a shady spot - on the plus side, besides not getting cancer, you will be able to read books, browse the web, watch movies, play games, ... etc on some magical device.

you might consider removing the iPhone out of your pocket for that matter... :D

It's possibly a fair point but most of my reading happens in the evenings and I don't want lots of single use devices cluttering up my life. One iPad is fine and covers a lot of different uses.

I did play with one of those new Kindles the other day and it's kinda neat as a book but even the owner qualified his purchase with "it's no iPad". :)

If I'm by a pool a 4.99 paperback is by far the best reading material compared to both of those.

Great ad. Good move from Amazon.

A few notes: There isn't really that much sunlight. The guy isn't planning to take a dive – look at his clothes – and he is the only one without sunglasses. Both appear to be single – look at the hands, no rings. And is his: "Excuse me, how are you reading that, in this light" the new pickup line for fools?

And who was it again who said that people are paying more for sunglasses? Yep the Amazon CEO. LOL I actually bought one for my daughter, who lost it the very first holiday about a week later.

Here's a fun twist: Name the hotel where the ad was shot :D

p.s. Is the guy really reading a book?

Apple can easily refuted it with an ad depicting the man reading on the bed with his wife/girl sleeping at the side, without any lighting in the room.

Now, think of it. Is it more frequent and practical reading in the comfort of room or reading at the pool side in the risk of sunburn?

And, guys, half the population on the globe try their best to avoid direct sunlight.

Or have him reading easily in the dark and the Kindle girl struggling with a torch...

I try to avoid direct sunlight with or without an iPad

As MacDawg pointed out: It is not healthy for you to stay in direct sunlight - you will get cancer from that.

Also, haven’t they heard of skin cancer :p

Wow, you guys sound like loads of fun on a hot summer day...

Ever heard of sunscreen ? Direct sunlight feels good on the bare exposed skin. Nothing like a nice day at the beach.

And, guys, half the population on the globe try their best to avoid direct sunlight.

Half the population of the globe don't live in cubicles all year round. Seriously, there's a difference between exposure every day, every minute, and a nice hot day by the pool during your 2 weeks of vacation time.

Stop seeing everything in black and white. The ad was good, I'm getting a big sour grapes vibe from people pointing out Skin Cancer.

Maybe he should turn on brightness.

That's about what my Macbook looks like full tilt in sunlight.

Hahah Damn! thats a smack in the face

But can the Kindle work as a mirror in direct sunlight? Noooooo it can't so eat that Amazon

anyone reading any "ebook" device by the pool is asking for trouble... depends on your mates of course... but my iPad's been covered in suncream, doused in lager, I've even found it in the bottom of the pool... worked fine afterwards though...

Of course it didn't but these things have happened with one of those old fashioned "book" things... I think it cost me £2.50

I have got both, got my new Kindle 3 the other day and both devices sit really nicely together for me. The Kindle replaces carrying around books not my Ipad, the screen is just fantastic for reading, and on the new devices the responsiveness and page turns are really nippy. Tried the Kindle app on my Ipad prior to buying it and I'm afraid it just didn't really feel comfortable for reading, same with iBooks really.

Jonathan.

Does the Kindle play audiobooks?

I personally think MacBook with a 13 inch screen is just about an Ok size for books, and my iPod Nano has space for far more than 1000 hours of audiobooks. Allows me to listen to books with my eyes closed. Beat that, Kindle :D

You see, most of us got passed the "mommy read me a book" stage at about age 6. Reading a book and getting a book read to you isn't the same thing. At all.

i am not in the market for any of these devices but i did find the advert funny i just did a price check and its possible to get the kindle for £109 but think i would still prefer a book maybe?

I like the Kindle and that's a cute ad. If I was primarily reading text in sunlight, I'd obviously use it (or a paper book) rather than an iPad.

Of course, I don't remember the last time I read anything other than a newspaperwhile sitting at an outdoor pool. And I'm not going to bring an iPad or Kindle to the beach. Come to think of it, I usually sit in shade when I'm outside relaxing/reading.

Also, she paid more than $140 for her sunglasses? The ad's intention was for me to feel like the Kindle is cheap (which it is), but my first thought was, "That's pretty wasteful if those aren't prescription".

Guess what, I found the ultimate solution for this sunlight reflection problem and it doesn't even cost as much as two tall Starbucks coffees. I am going to call it "Books" and it's made out of some mysterical new material called "paper". Isn't that magical and revolutionary?

BOOM!! Put that in your pipe and smoke it Apple!!!!!

Its a fair point though. There no getting away from the fact that the Kindle is a better option for reading outside on the beach etc. The iPad just doesnt cut it.

However overall the iPad is certainly heads and shoulders above the rest. Maybe a matt display on the horizon then??

Ill stand by to get flamed by the fanboys......

moreover, kindle is a better option for reading full stop (reading from backlit screens is not good for your eyes at all). I for one can't wait to buy the new one, although I also have an ipad on my wish list for its internet/apps capabilities.

How true... I was trying to use my iPad to play a game outside in the shade yesterday but due to the location I was in had to give it up. Ironically, my 17" MacBook Pro has the $50 optional non-glare screen and works fine there. I hear Apple finally offers it on the 15" again, but not on the 13s. Makes no sense. Amazon hit a home run with this commercial!

"Mommy" (aka audible.com) reads books to me every day during my 45+ minute commute. Really ticks off the other drivers when you try to read a book and drive at the same time (although I see it every day  )

back OT: The add is very funny; I hope S. Jobs sees the humor and doesn't see this as the commencement of an Apple:Amazon war. I would hate to see the kindle app disappear from the ipad at some point.

And I would really love to see Amazon VOD show up on the ipad. OK, I know that isn't going to happen without fed interference...

Maybe you should set aside time to have the full experience of actually reading the book, looking at the words, seeing how they are placed, and having an actual literary experience.

For driving, there's music and talk radio if all you want is background noise.

I can't believe people are really trying to justify Apple not getting dissed by pretending audiobooks are the same thing as reading.

Major FAIL !

Amazon CAN"T compete against the iPad. iPad has so many uses beyond e-book reading that they are trying to hang their hat on the one little wart the iPad has: That is doesn't work well in direct sunlight. BFD!

Apple could counter that Amazon should give sunscreen with every Kindle to prevent skin cancer, since it obviously only works in direct sun.

I think the term is "grasping for straws."

I have both. It is also not possible to read the Kindle in a dark room. If only both could allow you to very rapidly navigate like a text book while browsing.
