It is slightly annoying how slow you 'flip' pages, that display has an extreme slow response time. Annoying while reading, unusable for anything else. ..... Given how limited the use of the kindle is, it is way more expensive than an multifunctional device like the iPad -- have a kindle I still would need some additional media player, mp3 player, mobile browser, ....

The latest Kindle actually has much better response time now, still not great, but good. It also happens to support .mp3 music playback whilst you read and includes a web-kit based web browser. Now I know its a stretch to compare these to the iPad, but Kindle is improving and the overlap will only increase!

Colour e-Ink is apparently just around the corner...

you might consider removing the iPhone out of your pocket for that matter... :D

Nope - Guess you have never used an iPad and had the change to compare the browsing experience between iPhone and iPad - while the iPhone is great at it, the bigger screen of the iPad makes a huge difference for web browsing (and many other applications.

I do most of my reading in bed at night, something for which the Kindle is even more useless than the iPad is in direct sunlight.

A bit off topic - be careful with reading on iPad at late evening. The direct light signals your body to stay awake, some people have problems with sleep afterwards when reading on displays with background light on a regular basis.

There are 1,100+ petitions at this site below where Apple fans are complaining about glossy screens (only the 15" and 17" have matte option - all other Macs are glossy-only)

http://macmatte.wordpress.com/comment-page-1/#comments

Apple needs to realise that many people buy Apple IN SPITE of the glossy screen, because of the other plus factors, such as OSX, iOS etc - and NOT BECAUSE of the glossy screen.

Sure, some people love glossy - which is great - but other loathe the glossy screen. We're not arguing for Apple to remove glossy screens. We just want the choice of matte or anti-reflective. I said this specifically to avoid glossy-lovers replying by saying why they love glossy. There's no need to say that. I accept and agree with your right to like glossy screens. Just do the same and respect our right to be able to buy a matte, non-reflective screen if we want to.

Matte finish touchscreens for gaming just don't fly.

I think it's a fantastic advert. Well done Amazon.

As an e-reader, the Kindle is a great device and in direct sunlight, it's fantastic. I still wouldn't buy one though. The iPad is as far better all-round proposition and if I'm in direct sunlight, I'm out doing something active, not just sat reading! ;)

This is so true. I spent almost every weekend this summer at a beach club. There were dozens of people with kindles on the beach reading in the open sun. Only once did I see a guy with an iPad (under an umbrella). I asked him how it was to use on the beach and he said not very good. I love my iPad but find the glare pretty bad even in the shade when outside.

This commercial makes a good point... but, what freak would sit poolside reading an iPad or Kindle? What freak would sit outside reading one of these?

Kindle is nice. However, what can it do? Might as well just read a book.

Hope Apple releases a revised Ipad soon.

with a Anti Glare Screen option.
forward and rear facing cameras (like iphone 4)
a real GPS in wifi version
Full Flash Support

and then I will get one.

Cut the glare with a cheap anti-glare screen protector

Since first getting our iPads, we've add inexpensive (handhelditems) anti-glare protectors. They do an amazing job for just a few bucks.

Couldn't agree more. The glass screen was the first thing I noticed on the iPad that I did not like. It's also the sole reason I won't buy one. The glaring screen is so disturbing that I can't even use my Unibody MacBook properly when there is too much light around. My MacBook can stay on my desk, but the iPad is meant to be used on different places with different light.

I love my Kindle. I've tried the iPad but there is absolutely no way I am going to read a novel on a LCD screen. We don't need devices that do everything, my toaster can't boil water and my kettle can't toast but they are both brilliant at what they do. The Kindle is brilliant at what it does and it doesn't need to do anything else. (According to Amazon, Kindle sales have actually increased since the iPad release - maybe more eBook awareness?)

Yeah, better to always stay indoors, in the basement, as far from any natural light sources as possible. Wouldn't want your white pasty skin to have that healthy tint to it.

Kindle is nice. However, what can it do? Might as well just read a book.

Like the iPad ebook applications, it lets you carry around a selection of books while not taking up more than the space of 1. The same argument you just used can be used for iPad as well, yet people on this forum are quick to gnaw your head off for saying "just carry around the book".

I agree. When I sit on the beach, I enjoy a real book I've borrowed from the library... For free. (don't need a selection of books as I usually only read one at a time). For late at night when I can't sleep and I want to do other things, the iPad is perfect.

Welcome to advertising, pal.

Having worked on campaigns for Apple I can assure you that their TV/web video promotions & advertisements are also "enhanced for effect".
