It’s worth pointing out: Regardless of which company is doing the buying, consolidation of these massive companies is bad for us consumers. At the end of the day, if Amazon owns MGM, then MGM content will — one day soon — be unavailable on any other streaming platform, which means more and more subscriptions for higher prices just to see one specific show, movie, etc. I do not look forward to the day when I need 15 subscriptions to watch 15 different shows or movies, but that’s the inevitable future.

I'm not sure if it can. The tropes it displays, the sexism, the simplistic action hero motif… seems a bit of a bygone era.
It can work, but it needs re-thought. I hate to say it this way, but Bond needs to be more Roger Moore nowadays and less Daniel Craig. A modern Bond can be more fun, taking on larger than life villains who have crazy plots and operate in volcano lairs. Now I‘m not saying the movies need to go full MOONRAKER, but a little dash of the MCU with a touch of Connery‘s deadpan humor, and it could work. Imagine Tom Huddleston in charming mode with the hint of a hard edge. (I’ve thought way, way too much about this in the past couple of years)

Yes! The day where all our media is owned by one of three entities is even closer! I love it!
Sad. Amazon is able to do this because so many people use them like addicts. Some people call Google the evil company. Amazon is far worse. They have put so many small to medium size local business out of business over the years. But so many people want things cheap and delivered today.

Spending 9b to make or acquire new content is money better spent. Apple can make close to 200 new movies/docs etc at 50m a pop for each as opposed to basically MGM “old stuff” that unfortunately younger and younger generations could care less and less about
Much of that ‘old stuff’ includes well-established brands and franchises that have appeal across all generations of viewers. Spending a similar amount on new content does not give you any guarantees you’ll create your own valuable legacy IP in years to come - you could make a case that nothing Apple has done with Plus so far has stuck in this way, with only Ted Lasso proving to be a property that people would even recognise.

So that’s why apple tv+ is the best streaming service w the best content... even w the free year of ATV+ apple gave me I never saw anything that I really wanted to watch. Ask the younger generations what they think about appletv+ vs other services... MGM cost at worst if anyhting will be a small lost to Amazon… pushing people for the subs is what Amazon and Netflix wants and to me this seems to be the right move to compete in the streaming market.

Perfect, exactly what we needed. More fragmentation. All these movie industry studios are so greedy. If only it were like the music industry, where someone could still only pay $10/month for unlimited music. Now to get close to the same “unlimited” type of figures that the music industry has, it will cost someone well over $150/month in subscriptions to have all these different movie services.

And the worst part is, I don’t see a way backwards. Once a studio has this income streaming in, I don’t see them making deals to then combine with other studios (for the benefit of the consumer). :/

This sort of drives home the fact that Apple keeps passing on large media company acquisitions (like Time Warner). With Apple's 2 trillion in value, they could easily outbid and build Apple TV+ into a real contender with Netflix / Hulu, but they don't appear interested in doing so. The anemic offerings they do produce are not enough to keep subscribers after their free subscriptions run out.

100%. The fact that Apple turned down the opportunity to purchase MGM says a lot about their ambition, or at least interests. Instead they'd rather be making documentaries about Billie Eilish and throwing Snoopy in there, for whatever reason...

Apple isn’t very telling on what their ambitions are. Or what criteria they use to measure success. I’d say it depends on revenue streams. We’re not privy to the info. But I would say apple isn’t stupid. They know their content isn’t much. They know that others like mgm are or were for sale.

When you got millions of users with your devices running your OS and you get a 30% cut of purchases or subs they make on that device. Then perhaps you look at things differently than say a Netflix.

While I have prime, I don’t watch it a lot, I am not extending my atv+ beyond the free trial… adding MGM might have changed that.
I think it’s a lost opportunity for Apple…

Personally, I think Apple should go a different route here…

Instead of trying to buy something big like MGM or Warner Media, they should be trying to buy smaller entities and add them up into one TV service. I think a great example of this would be AMC Networks. AMC owns : AMC, IFC, Sundance, BBC America, Shudder to name a few. Also, possibly buy something like BritBox and offer their catalog. Let the cable contracts lapse and move them to Apple exclusivity.

If you haven't seen "The Night Manager" on Amazon Prime, you should. Tom Hiddleston / Hugh Laurie spy miniseries. A real treat.

Maybe now more of the world can see some of the great shows that air on EPIX, such as Pennyworth, War of the Worlds, Condor, Get Shorty (TV show, not the movie), Berlin Station, Deep State, and Graves. Maybe some of the shows that have not yet been renewed like Pennyworth, will get renewed and some of the show that got cancelled already due to lack of EPIX viewership can get reignited, like Get Shorty and Berlin Station.

Unless I’m missing something, this kinda feels like a steal? The Bond franchise alone has brought in over $10B or so I think. Imagine branching out and further developing some of the better known franchises in this catalog (like Star Wars has done) AND having a full catalog to supplement Prime Video immediately.
Especially when you compare it to the likes of WhatsApp to Facebook ($19bn). And that was 7 years ago.

Perhaps. Or get out of the TV movie show business completely. Spreading oneself too thin has been the ruin of many.

This could be bad news for the traditional television broadcasters because Amazon will use the MGM catalogue to entice people to sign up to Amazon TV and a result of this is that Amazon has no incentive to allow traditional television broadcasters a license to air the movies because it would mean keeping potential paying customers away from Amazon TV.

Simplistic action hero movies are big money. Action heroes sleeping around is honest and true not sexist (do you know how many women a movie star or NBA player sleeps with? Should we pretend that’s not real?).

The biggest movies in Hollywood are shallow action hero movies with super heroes. Updating Bond may or may not make money but it’s genre remains incredibly profitable. I am not a big Bond fan but I think you are describing the world as you want not as the box office sees it.
